The cylinder-pistons and rope are preferably madclong enough to turn the platform a whole revolution.
Of course the pistons may be connected to the wheel `E in various ways to effect the turning, or the turning maybe effected by causing the pistons to turn or with the other gear-wheels attached to the bed O.
L represents cylinders containing` pistons, provided with rods for working the scoop M, which is p'ivoted at N to the cross-head c, attached' to the outer ends of the ways q.
I now propose to combine other cylinders, R, with the cylinders L and the scoop, to aid in working the latter, and in this example I attach these cylinders to' .the ways Q, connecting the pistons to cross-heads S,
and connecting the latter to thescoop by articulated links .T U.
' These cylinders R and'pistons are designed to work, in conjunction with the others, '11, for forcing the scoop into the ground and turning it up as it fills, which is done by imparting thesamc speed to the pist-ons of both cylinders at rst, then lessening the speed of `the upper ones, which may be done by gauging the water forced in againstA the pistons.
The scoop may be tilted by moving out the pistons of cylinders R, or by holding them stilland moving backthe pistousof cylinders L.
When the scoop is emptied, all thepistons are run back together for the next operation.
' At All have .represented a water-tank, in dotted lines; for containing the water to be used, into which the water is discharged' after using.
'A2 represents pipes, also in dotted lines, to be used nection with the pumps, and an exhaust leading to the water-tank, but they may be arrangedin any preferred way.
I propose to make the scoop so as to open at the bottom, for discharging therefrom when required, and
ftherefore suspend the bottom V, which is made separate from the other part,on the arms W, which are pivoted 'at X, and rising at the upper ends near to the top, where they are engaged, by spring-catchesY,
y to hold the bottom closed.
The axis of these catches has an arm, Z, attached at one end for the connection of a tripping-cord, byA
which the catches are disengaged from the arms W to open the scoop and let'the contents discharge.
For closing `the bottom of the scoop automatically,-
when the scoop is turned down at the front for taking a load, I ari-ange a spring-bar, #1, on the cross-bars z?,
