WILLIAM WILSON GGURLAY AND JAMES W. GOURLAY,
OF SOUTH VINELAND, NEW
JERSEY.
LEVATING-ROD-ACTUATING DEVICE.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that We, lVILLIAM 1W. GOUR- LAY and JAMES United States, residing at South Vineland, in the county of Cumberland and State ot' New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elevating-Rod-Actuating evices, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to attachments for linotype machines and more particularly to the actuating mechanism for the assembling elevator or assembler blocks of the type used in the Mergenthaler machine.
One of the principal objects of the inven` tion is to provide a simple and eilicient attachment whereby the assembler block may be conveniently elevated without the necessity of the operator rremoving his hand from the key-board.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specilic description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a pa rt ot this application, and in which the tigi'ire is a diagram matic vieW showing the device 'arranged alongside of the ordinary keyboard of a Mergenthaler machine and connected to the usual assembler block.
In the preferred construction of thev de- -vice A represents the ordinary assembler block Which is'operated through a rotating shaft B connected to the block by a linkC and elevator rod D, the rod in the usual manner by the hand' lever'1 E. The attachment comprises a standard l which is bolted to the Hoor adjacent thelind type machine and has pivoted inf-its upper end a lever 2 connected to the foot pedal 3 by means of a link el, the link being pivot-ed both to the pedal and to the liever 2. The end of the pedal opposite its connection with the link, is pivoted to a floor plate 5 secured to the floor. The lever 2 has the end opposite to the one connected to the link 4 provided With a longitudinal slot 6 which receives a lateral pin 7 formed.
Specicaton of Letters latent. Application led October 11, 1912,
lV. GOURLAY, citizens of the B being turned.
on the lower end of the Patented Nov. 17, 1.914. Serial No. 725,257.
rod is guided in any a guide 8 secured to elevator rod D. The suitable manner as by the machine or to any other suitable support. 5C
The upper end of the provided with a plura whereby the connection of the lever 2 with the link L may be adjusted when desired thereby permitting the fioor plate 5 to beattached to a surface Whose plane is higher or lower than the surface to which the standard l is secured and yet obtain the proper inclination of the toot pedal. A spring 10 extends from one end of the lever 2 to the base so that when the foot pedal is Ireleased the assembler block A will lead to normal position and the foot pedal elevated for a second operation.
v What is claimed is:` .fin elevating rod' actuating device including` a base, a standard rising from and formed integral with. said base, a lever pivotallj.V connectciil at ils medial portion to the extreme upper inner face of said standard and lhaving an elongated slot formed longitudinally thereof in one of its ends, an elerating rod, a pin projecting laterally from the extreme lower end of said rod, said pin passing through the slot of said lever, and yieidable means disposed in a vertical plane with the standard' connectedhat one end link 4 is preferably lity of apertures 9 and with said pin and the slotted endof the lever and at its other end uiththe base for restoring the elevatingrpdto normal position,
a manually operated rmember, and means connected at one end with the latter men- 'tioned member and adjustably connectedV at its other end with the'opposite end of said lever for connecting the manually operated member.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM WILSON GOURLAY. JAMES W. GOURLAY. llitinfsses llfliii'riinnn E. Sounnn, Jeux Mormow.
