To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK NV. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oshkosh, in the county of lVinnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to locking devices of that kind adapted for holding from relative movement or disconnection two parts, such as a sliding drawer or door. and a surrounding frame, and embracing .a lock-casing provided with a movable bolt or locking member, and a metal keeper adapted to be engaged by the bolt when the latter is projected from the casing.
The object of the invention is to provide, in connection with a lock of the kind referred to, a safety attachment so constructed that the drawer, door or the like, to which the lock is applied, cannot be forcibly opened without the entire disintegration of either the lock-case or the keeper from the part to which the same is attached.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which show a form of look more especiallyadapted for use in connection with sliding drawers,
Figure 1 is a sectional. view taken verticallv through a sliding drawer and its surrounding frame, showing the drawer in its open position; the section being taken on line 1-l of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a view similarto Fig. 1 showing the parts in the position occupied by the same when the drawer is closed and locked; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, taken on line of Fig. 2, showing the lock and keeper in elevation.
As shown inthe accompanying drawings, a lockcase Aprovided with a sliding bolt 13 is attached to the inner side face of a movable member G, shown as constituting the front wall. of the slidingdrawer illustrated, and a keeper D is attached to a relatively fixed member E, shown as constituting the top horizontal member of the compartment or casing in which such drawer is inserted. The movable member C is so arranged that when in its closed position, or in position for being locked to the fixed member E, the edge a of said movable member is arallel with the adjacent surface 6 of saic fixed member; said edge a of the movable member moving in a direction parallel with the sun face a of the fixed member E when the movable membcr is opened and closed, as in the case of the front wall of the sliding drawer illustrated, when closed into its surrounding frame, and as usual in the case of a swing ing door, when its swinging edge is brought within the door frame or amb. The lockcase A is attached to the inner face of the member C, in such position that its bolt 13 will project beyond the top edge 0 of said member when the bolt is thrownto its looking position, and the keeper D is attached to the lower surface a of the fixed member E, in proper position to be engaged by the bolt, when the latter is in its locking position, in a manner to prevent outward movement of the movable member C in the direction of the plane of the surface 0. The lock-case is provided with a base-plate a, at its side which rests against the inner face of the member C, to which said lock-case is at tached. i
Now referring to the parts to which my invention more particularly relates, the lockcase A is provided with a rigidly attached, auxiliary locking arm F having. a keeperengaging part 7', which is arranged at right angles to the bolt B, and in position to engage the external or outwardly facing surface of the said keeper, when the laterally facing or holding edge (Z of said keeper is engaged by the said bolt. As shown in the drawings, said locking arm F is formed by means of a flat plate bent into U-shape to form the horizontal, keeper-engaging part f of said arm and upright and horizontal connecting parts f, F, by which said part 7 is connected with the lock-case. The part f is arranged at a distance above the lock-case, and is rigidly connected with the lock-case by means of the horizontal, outwardly extending connecting part 7' and the upright part f, and having its free end directed inwardly, or toward the bolt 13.
The keeper D has, as shown, the form of a flat bar, secured at its ends to the member E. by means of rivets d, (1, or other fastening means. The central or bolt-engaging part of said keeper is spaced from the inner or lower surface of said member E so as to form a space or slot adaptedto receive the end or part of the locking arm 13, when the parts are in locking position. The. rear or inner edge cl of said reeper is, moreover, so located that when the locking arm is engaged with the upper face of the keeper, or that remote from the ,lockcase, the bolt-B will rest or bear against said inner edge (Z. In other words, the parts are so arranged that, when the bolt is thrown, it will slide past the said inner edge (Z of the keeper and come into locking engagement with the latter, after the auxiliary lockingmember F has come into interlocking engagement with said keeper. The free end or edge of said locking member F is preferably located exterior to the plane of the outer face of the bolt B, so that the latter when thrown, may extend past saidedge, as well as past the inner edge (Z of the keeper, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In order that the keeper may be made of considerable width, and be thereby given greater strength and ri idity, the keeperengaging part f of the arm F is made of such length from front to rear as to extend outwardly beyond the plane of the baseplate'a of the lock-case, and the connecting part f of said arm is located at a distance outwardly from its point of connection with said base-plate. T he said locking member F is thereby adapted to engage or receive the keeper when the latter is made of such width as to extend laterally to a considerable distance outside of the plane of the inner surface of the movable member C, when the parts are in locking position. The locking arm F, when thus made, has the form of a hook, which, with the end of the bolt B, surrounds or embraces the keeper, regardless of the width of the same as compared with the dimensions of the lock-case itself, as clearly seen in Fig. 2. As a further improvement, I make the auxiliary locking arm F in one piece or integral with the baseplate a of the lockcase. In other Words, the said arm F, when it has the form of a relatively thin and Wide plate, as shown, constitutes an outward extension of one Wall of the lock-case; thereby greatly simplifying the construction of the device, and giving it maximum strength in proportion to its size.
From the above description of a locking device embodying my invention, it will be seen that the same includes a lock-case having both a movable locking member and a fixed locking member, and that said movable and fixed locking members engage the keeperby movements of the said "members, relatively to the keeper, in" directions at right angles to each other, with the result that the keeper is held from movement, relatively to the lockcase, in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of the movable locking member and also in a direction parallel. to such direction of movement. In other words, the keeper is rigidly held or locked from movement tending to separate it from the loclecase, or such as would permit its disengagement from the bolt by its movement outwardly past the end of said bolt. The keeper being thus locked to the lock-case, the lock cannot be forced, except by the application of such pressure as would serve to detach either the keeper, or the lock-case, from the part to which the same is attached.
A. device made as described may be applied to looks for swinging parts, such as doors, as well as to sliding parts, such as drawers. Such a device is particularly applicable to compartments provided with sliding drawers, when the same are made of light construction such as are used in wardrobe trunks for travelers use. In a case of this kind, the walls of the compartment are made of thin and easilyflexed material, and its horizontal members (such as is indicated by E in the drawings) could be easily bent or spread away from the upper edge of the drawer front (such as is indicated by C inthe drawings), in a manner to disengage the keeper from the bolt B of the lock. By providing the auxiliary locking member F, the keeper'will be so confined and held, relatively to the lock-case, that the fixed, horizontal top of the case cannot be .bent away from the top of the drawer front without using such force as to break open the case or tear the keeper or lock-case from its fastenings.
hen a device made as described is applied to a door, not only willthe opening of the door by forcing its edge away from the jamb be prevented, but the forcing back of the bolt by the use of a knife or a fiat implement, inserted between the door and jamb, will be made impossible because of themesence of the locking arm F in line with and outside of the bolt.
It is to be understood that the specific features of construction and design in a locking device embodying my invention may be variously modified without departure from the spirit of the invention, and I do not Wish to be limited to the features and details illustrated, except so far as the same may be pointed out in the appended claims as constituting parts of invention.
I claim as myinventioni 1. In a lock, the combination with a stationary member and a movable member, the
latter being substantially at right angles to said stationary member, when said members are in position for locking, of a keeper attached at it's ends to said stationary member, and having a part intermediate its ends spaced from said stationarymember, a lockcase mounted upon the movable member, and the latter being provided with a fixed member having an arm adapted to extend between the ends of said keeper and into the space between the same and said stationary member, when said stationary and movable members are in position for looking, to prevent said members from being spread apart, and a bolt adapted to be moved into positionto engage an inwardly facing surface onthe keeper.
2. In a lock, the combination with a stationary member and a movable member, slidably mounted with respect to said stationary member, of a keeper attached at its ends to said stationary member, and having a part intermediate its ends spaced from said stationary member, a lock-case mounted upon the movable member, and the latter being provided with a fixed locking member having an arm adapted to extend between the ends of said keeper and into the space between the same and said stationary member, when said stationary and movable members are in position for locking, to prevent said members from being spread apart, and l a bolt adapted to be moved into position to engage the inner margin of the keeper.
