Be it known that we, Anim) Gr. SUNDELL, a subject of the King of Sweden, and JOHN E. MARKKO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, Chio, and Washington, District of Columbia, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to faucets, and more particularly to the class of selfclosing quick operating faucets or valves for faucets.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a faucet of this character wherein the valve located therein is of a novel construction and also the operating medium therefor so that on the application of a drinking vessel or other container the said medium will be moved for the opening of the valve, thereby permitting the fluid to flow into the vessel or container and on the removal of the latter the fluid is automatically cut olf.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a faucet of this character wherein drinking water Linder pressure can be discharged under the action of a quick valve by the application of a cup or glass to be filled and upon pressing upwardly thereon, the water being freely discharged from the faucet as the said valve is of a construction so as not to check or obstruct the passage of the water through the mouth of the faucet.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a faucet of p this character wherein the construction of the valve and its push medium are of novel form so that the same can be readily assembled within the mouth of the faucet and will not obstruct the free liow of the water when the valve is open, thereby eliminating the possibility of the accumulation of sediment and thus rendering the faucet thoroughly sanitary and also assuring the proper seating and opening of the valve for the control ofthe water supply through the faucet.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and. the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the'appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a faucet partly in section, showing the improvement constructed in accordance with the invention applied;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the faucet partly in section with a glass pressed against the push medium for the free flow of water into the glass;
VFig. 3 is a bottom` plan view;
Fig. is a vertical sectional view through the detachable nozzle end of the faucet;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation thereof;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the valve per se.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates a faucet formed at one end with an externally threaded nipple 10 for the connection thereof to a water main, while the opposite externally threaded reduced end 11 of said faucet is adapted for the detachable mounting of the enlarged end 12 of a mouth nozzle in the form of a sleeve 13,
, and within this nozzle at the juncture of the enlarged end 11 therewith is formed a valve seat 11i with which engages a tapered valve l5 which controls the water discharge through the faucet A, as will be ap arent.
The nozzle is formed at diametrica ly opposite points with longitudinally disposed slots 16 opening through the smaller end thereof for receiving a cross guide piece 17 formed interiorly of a collar or hub 18 telescoped upon the nozzle 13 and integral with laterally extending opposed presser arms 18 with which isadapted to engage a tumbler, glass or other vessel 19, so that on pressing upwardly thereupon the valve 15 will be unseated or opened in the manner presently described. y
y llhe valve 15 is mounted upon a valve stem 20 which is formed with a reduced split end 21, the same being passed through a suitable opening in the cross guide piece 17, and this split end 2l is spread for the fastening of the stem 2O to the said guide piece 17, thereby connecting the valve with the presser arm 18 as shown, so that on pressing upwardly upon the vessel 19, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing the valve 15 Will be unseated or opened, thereby permitting the Water to freely {ioiv through the faucet A into the said vessel for the filling thereof, and When pressure is released upon the vessel 19 the valve will automatically seat or close, there by shutting off the supply or discharge of Water through the faucet, as Will be apparent. It Will be apparent that by reason of the particular arrangement of the parts above described the flow or discharge of the water will be unobstructed and there is no possibility of the collection of sediment or other. foreign matter, thereby assuring a proper seating` and unseating of the valve on the operation of the faucet.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described faucet will be readily understood and a `more extended explanation has therefore been omitted.
Having thus described our invention, ive claim: v
The combination with a faucet, of a sleeve detachably connected With the free end of the faucet and having an internal valve seat, a valve normally engaging the seat and having a stem, a hub telescoped upon the sleeve and having an internal cross guide piece engaged by the stem, laterally extending opposed presser arms formed on and coincident with the lower edge of the hub, the said sleeve being formed with longitudinally disposed elongated slots receiving the guide piece, and a reduced split end on the stein for engagement with the guide piece and fixed thereto on the spreading of the split end, the vertical length ot' the slots corresponding approximately to the length of the hub below the cross guide base, Whereby in use no portion of the apparatus will project Within the vessel used with the faucet.
