Be it known that I, HAKON K. HAUBERG,

a citizen of the United States, residing -at Henning, in the county of Ottertaill and State of Minnesota, have invented new and strong and durable of construction, reliable.

and efiicient in operation, adapted for splitting a large amount of Wood within a given time, and capable of. being manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described 'and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a simple form of wood splitting machine embodying my invention, in which but a single splitting tool is used; f C:

Fig. 5 is a plan view of a portion of the Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings, 1 designates a frame of the wood l splitting machine, comprising base sills or runners 2, connected at their ends by cross pieces 3, uprights 4 rising from said sills or runners, a work bench or table 5, supported by the uprights, and a suitable bed or plat- 'form 6 mounted upon the rear ends of the sills or runners and forming a support for a motor 7, preferably of the gasolene or other internal combustion type. The apparatus may be designed for use as a permanent fixture, in which case it may be bolted or otherwise secured to a floor or foundation, or it may be of a transportable type, in which event suitable draft appliancesamay be employed for drawing it from place to place upon trucks or supporting wheels or upon the sills or runners 2 as sliding surfaces.4 l

The front and rear portions of the table 5 are bifurcated to form receiving slots 8 and 9, and the intermediate portion kof the table is also provided with a longitudinal guide opening 10 communicating with the slot 9. The front slot 8 is designed'to receive a re-A duced VVbase portion, 11 of a head block 12, which rests upon the upper surface of the table, said blocktserving as a iiXed abutment or support for the wood which is to be split and, if made of wood, bein provided,

if desired, with a metallic rein orcing and wear surface 13. The block is adjustably mounted in position in order to dispose it in proper relation with respect to the cutting tool to act as a backing for pieces of wood of different lengths which are to be split or subdivided. Pins 14 project from the underside of the block and are-adapted for engagement with spaced series of openings 15, 16`and 17 for adJustably fastening the block in position. A cleat 18 is secured to the underside of the rear part of the base portion 11 of the block and en ages under thetable at the opposite sides o the slot 8, thus holding the block from upward displace ment, while permitting it to be tilted to a suicient degree to effect the insertion and removal of the pinswithin and from the sockets 15, 16 and 17, so that the block may be conveniently adjusted, locked and released as occasion requires in the use of the device. A cross piece 19 extends across the outer side of the slot 8 and limits the outward movement of the block 12, thus preventing its accidental outward displacement, a cross piece 19 connects and reinforces the portions of the table at opposite sides of the opening 9.` n

rlhe cutter comprises a wedge-shaped splitting knife 20 which is mounted upon the forward end of a bar 21 connected at its `rearend with ahorizontal transverse crank upper end of said swinging arm moving in 1 the slot 10 and thus serving as a guide to cause the cutter, as it is reciprocated, to

move in a direct line.

In the operation of the device, the piece moved and a new section of wood to be split' inserted in place thereon during the period or interval elapsing between the retraction of the cutter and its next ensuing forward stroke, and, inasmuch' as the cutter may be operated with any desired degree of rapidity, it will be understood that a very large amount of wood may be split within a given time.

For the purpose of enabling the operator to conveniently handle the material, a work tray or support in the form of a leaf 26 may be arranged at one side of the machine and provided with fastening brackets 27 to engage loops28 to detachably secure it inposition, while an endless conveyer 29 may be mounted at the other side of the machine for rapidly carrying oli' the split wood. This conveyer 29 is preferably provided with brackets 30 to engage loops 31 similar to the brackets 27 and loops 28, so that it may be detachably fastened in position, and if desired the construction may be such as to adapt the leaf and conveyer to be interchangeably mounted at opposite sides of the machine for right or left hand use. The conveyer is driven by a shaft 32 .connected by beveled gears 33 with the driving shaft 22.

If it should be desired to increase the capacity of the machine a double cutter type of machine may be employed,V as shown in Fig. 7. In this form of machine a table is provided with guideways 34 at each side for the cutters and headl blocks. and the Cutters" are coupled by rods or bars 36 to cranks 37 y this form of the apparatus, which allows operators to work at both sides of the table, will be readily understood from the foregoingdescription.

- A machine of the character described comprising a frame, including Ahorizontal sills, supporting posts rising therefrom, and side bars carried by Said posts, a table mounted upon said' side bars and having longitudinal slots at each end thereof and a division' piece between said slots, a swinging arm pivotally mounted at its lower end upon the sills and extending at its upper end through and movable in one of said slots, a cutter pivotally mounted upon the upper end of said arm, a cross lpiece secured to the side bars and extending transversely across the other slot, an abutment block slidablymounted at the rear portion of its base upon said cross piece, said side bars being provided with dowel seats and said cross piece having dowel pins to adjustably engage said seats, a cross piece upon the base of the forward end of the block extending beneath said side bars, a transverse shaft journaled upon the table and having a crank portion arranged in line with the first-named slot, a pitman rod connecting said crank with the pivoted cutter, and means for driving the shaft for reciprocating the cutter toward and from the block.
