Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr., i6, ili.
Application led August 16, 1915. Serial No. 45,665.
To all lwhom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS FARMER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Motors, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of my linvention which I at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of my invention, reference ma be had to the following specification an to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention.
My invention relates to the control of pneumatic motors employed to operate doors. In brief I provide that a latch which serves to lock the door shall be also made to control the duration of action of the motor.
In the accompanyingv drawing, A represents a door and B a pneumatic motor of any desired construction which serves to open and close the door. The motor is controlled, for door-opening, by a valve V operated by a magnet M and, for door-closing, by a valve V2 operated by a magnet M2. C is a latch engaging a notch in the upper edge of the door and locking the door in closed position, as shown in the figure. D is 'a cylinder supplied with air pressure by the pipe d whenever air is admitted by valve V to the motor B to open the door. A piston in cylinder D lifts the latch C to unlock the door just prior to its opening. When the latch is lifted andthe door starts, the latch' will ride on the upper edge of the door while the door is moving and will drop od' the front corner of the door when its opening movement is completed. While the latch is thus lifted it will close the two contacts c', c2 .and thereby close a shunt around each of the two push-button switches m and m2 which control the respective valvemagnets M and M2. Thus, to start the opening of the door, the switch m of magnet M will be closed momentarily by the operator. That will admit air to the righthand end of the motor (also to the latchlifting cylinder D) and the motor will start to open the door. The circuit of valvemagnet M will be kept closed at c by the retaining circuit shunting vswitch lm. until the .door has completed its run when the latch willdrop on the corner of the doorV reaches the end of its stroke, said switch having projections positioned to be engaged by a proJection on the piston of the motor. It will be understood that said switch E is merely illustrated diagrammatically in the drawing, and that suitable means such as a sprlng catch E is provided to hold it to either of its circuit closing positions. The valves V and V2 are ordinary two-way valves, normally connecting both motor cylinders to exhaust, but acting, when operated by their magnets, to'shutof the exhaust and open the supply.
What I claim as new and desire to secure' I by Letters Patentl is:
1. The combination with a Vdoor and a pneumatic motor for'operating the same, lof
a valve controlling said motor', a lock for.g
the door, means controlled independently of the lock for opening said valve, and `means controlled by the lock for causing saidvalve opening means to maintain `said. valve in` open position until the door reaches the end a of its movement. y i
2. rEhe combination with 'a ,door1.and a pneumatic motor-for operating the saine;- an electrically actuated valve for controlling said motor, a lock for the door, a starting circuit foropening the valveand a maintaining circuit for said valve controlled by u said lock.
3., The combination with a door and a le@ pneumatic motor for operating the same, of a valve controlling said motor, a lock for the door, means controlled independently of the lockv for opening said valve, means con- .trolled by the lock for causing said valve-` opening ,means to maintain said valve inv open position until the door reaches the end' of its movement, and means operable upon the opening of said valve for moving said lock. 'l i nee open position until the doorreaches the end l of its movement, and pneumatic means oontrolled by the valve for operatin said locln 5. 'llhe combination wlth a f. and a pneumatic motor for operating the e, an electrically actuated valve for controlling said motor, a lock for the door, a starting circuit for opening the valve, said circuit includin a startin Switch, a maintainin circuit s unting said switch, and a switc operated by .saldlock for controlling said maintag circuit.
6. rllhe combination with adoor and a pneumatic motor for operatingthe same, of an opening valve for said motor, a closing .valve for the motor, a lock 4for the door,
- means controlled independently of the lock for actuating the opening valve, means conltroll by the lock for independently open moana-i ing said valves, and means controlled ley the loclr for causing the Valve to remain open until'the door reaches the end of its movement.,
7. The combination with a door and `a pneumatic motor therefor, of an electrically actuated door o suing valve, an electrically actuated door c osing valve, a lock for the door, starting circuits for opening therespective valves, and maintaining circuits for holding the valves onen, said maintaining circuits being control ed by the lock.
8. The combination with a door and a pneumatic motor therefor, of an electrically actuated door o ening valve, an electrically actuated door cvosing valvea lock for the door, starting circuits for opening the respective valves, maintaining circuits for holding the Valves open, said maintaining circuits bein controlled by the lock', and means mova le with the door for alternately connecting a source of ener to the opemng and closlng circuits res ectlvely.
lin witness whereof li have hereunto set my hand this 13th da of Au st, i915.
