SCALE, RULE, AND LIKE MEASURE or nnnern.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed April 17, 1918. Serial No. 229,135.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED LEONARD NEWELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Prestbury, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Scales, Rules, and like Measures of Length, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scales, rules and like measures of length (hereinafter for'convenience referred to as scales) and has for its object to provide a scale which can be cheaply produced and is especially applicable as an advertising medium.
A scale in accordance with this invention I consists of a strip of thin sheet metal of suitable length and width and a stiifening strip of cardboard, wood or other suitable material of lesser width around the longitudinal edges of which the sides of the metal strip arebent so that their edges do not meet at the back.
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are fragmentary perspective views of one construction of scale or rule in accordance with the invention, Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, are like views of two further constructions and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the metal strip before bending.
Referring to the drawing, a is a strip of thin metal of appropriate width and marked with the required divisions and b is a strip of stiffening material of lesser width around the longitudinal edges of Which the strip a is bent so that the edges a thereof do not meet. In Figs. 1 and 2 the stiffening strip bis of cardboard or the like and in Figs. 3 and 4 the strips are of wood.
At the front the edges of the scale are preferably beveled and at the back the scale is preferably correspondingly or otherwise concaved. This may be effected when the stilfenin strip is of cardboard or like material by %)ending the metal and stiffening strips longitudinally as at 0, Figs. 1 and 2,
, at a suitable distance from the edges of the scale, while if the stiffening strip is of wood or other material which Will not bend, it may be effected by shaping the stiffening strip 6 with beveled edges at the front and a concavity b at the back, as in Fig. 3. In
some cases, however, the back of the scale may be fiat, as in Fig. 4.
The required divisions are preferably printed or otherwise marked on the metal strip a before the latter is attached to the stiffening strip 6 and the markings are preferably of such transverse length, as shown in Fig. 5, that on the bending of the strip along the dotted lines (Z, they also appear on the back of the scale, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
When the scale is used as an advertising medium the advertisement may be printed or otherwise provided on the back of the stiffening piece 6 or on a separate strip of paper or other material 6 (Fig. 4) secured thereto by an adhesive or by the bent or turned-over sides of the metal strip a. The advertisement will be prevented from coming into contact with any surface on which the scale is laid or rests and being thereby damaged by reason of its lying withinlthe concavity of the back of the scale or between the bent or turned-over sides of the metal strip.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A scale, rule or like measure of length comprising a strip of thin metal of suitable length and width and marked With the required divisions, and a stiffening strip of lesser width around the longitudinal edges of which the sides of the metal strip are bent so that their edges do not meet at the back, said metal strip being permanently attached to said stiffening strip.
2. A scale, rule or like measure of length comprising a stiffening strip and a thin metal strip of greater width than said stilfening strip and bent around the longitudinal edges thereof so that its side edges do not meet at the back, said metal strip having the required divisions on both sides of both longitudinal edges and being permanently attached to said stiffening strip.
3. A scale, rule or like measure of length comprising a stifiening strip 'concaved on one side and flat on the other side and hav-' ing its longitudinal edges beveled, and a thin metal strip of greater width than said stiffening strip and bent around the longitudinal edges thereof so that its side edges do not meet at the concaved side, said metal comprising a stiffening strip flat on one side and concave on the other and having longtudinal beveled edges and a thin metallicstrip bent around the edges, and fiat side of said stiifening strip and permanently at- Go'pi. ofthis patent may be obtained-for fivebents each, by'addi'essing the Washington, D. 03 e tached thereto said metallic strip being pro.- vided on both sides of both edges with graduations of measure, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ALFRED LEONARD NEWELL.
