AUTOMOBILE-PUSHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led December 20, 1916. Serial No. 138,058.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RowLAxD BALL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at La Grange, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile- Iushers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n automobile pushers.
The object of my invention is to provide a pusher of this character in which an automobile can be. extricated out of mud holes or other difiicult places, by its own power and providing means whereby a footing for the same can be obtained at any pointv adjacent the rear of the automobile.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective pusher of this character having certain details of structure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a cylinder of an elongated form, having a true smooth interior bore, and having its lower end internally screw-threaded at into which is screwed the threaded stem 3 of the plug 4. This plug 4 has a ball 5 at its lower end which fits in the socket 6 of the enlarged foot 7. The foot 7 has a flat lower end provided with pins or spurs 8 which form holding means to prevent the slipping thereof, when placed on a solid support or other convenient place, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Slidably mounted in the cylinder 1 is a tube 9 which closely fits the same and has its lower end internally threaded at 10 andinto which is screwed a sleeve 11 having the outwardly extending flange 12 engaging the interior of the cylinder. The sleeve 11 is internally threaded, into which is screwed a bushing 12 having a lateral flange 13, the periphery of which is slightly less than the diameter of the cylinder 1. Between the flanges 13 and 12 is placed a leather cup 13 which extends down on the outside of the periphery of the flange 13, to form a tight ]o1nt with the interior of the cylinder.
rlhe upper end of the tube 9 is internally threadec at 14 and into which is screwed the extension 15 of the plug 16. The member 16 has a hollow ball 17 formed integral therewith, and communicating with the interior of the ball is a passage 18 which extends through the extension 15 and communicates with the interior of the tube 9. 'lhe ball 17 fits loosely in the socket 19V carried by the foot 20, whereby the head 20 can turn to adjust itself so as to bear against the most convenient part of the car. The socket 19 has an elongated slot 21 in one side through which extends a nipple connected to a Huid supply tank, arranged on the car or to a pump, as will be later described. The nipple 22 is screwed into the ball and communicatesl therewith, whereby a fluid pressure is admitted thereto. By the arrangement of the slot, the head can be ad- ]usted in one direction and the foot being adjusted in any direction, the upper head can be arranged to bear flat against any portion of the automobile.
Surrounding the cylinder is a coil spring 23 which has one end secured to the plug 4, and which spring has its opposite end secured to the plug 16, whereby the tube 9 is normally held in its position within the cylinder.
The head 20, as shown is provided with upwardly extending fianges 20 which are provided at one end with the extensions 21 so that the foot will fit on a round or square axle and will not slip olf of the same.
In operation the foot 8 is placed upon the ground and the head 20 is placed against the most convenient part of the machine, such as the axle, hub or the like. Fluid pressure is supplied to the pipe 22 from a pump on the automobile, which forces the tube 9 in an outward direction, which will move the vehicle forward. Two or more of these pushers could bey used and by the arrangement of the ball and socket connection of the head and foot, the same can be used at any angle so that a `good footing ou the ground may be had. When the iuid pressure in the pipe 22 is released, the spring 23 forces the tube backward within the cylin der, and when oil is used as the motive power, the oil is forced back into the tank and used over in the next operation of the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claini is:

A device of the character described, comprising an outer cylinder, a 'foot having a ball and socket connection with the lower end of the cylinder, a tube sliding within the cylinder, a packing carried by the inner end ot' the tube and engaging the cylinder, a head having a ball and socket connection with the end of the tube, and ineans Jfor supplying fluid pressure to the cylinder through the ball and socket.
:2-` A device ot' the character described, comprising an outer cylinder, a foot having a ball and socket connection with the lower end ot' the cylinder, a tube sliding within the cylinder, a packing carried by the inner end of the tube and engaging the cylinder, a head having a ball and socket connection with the outer end of the tube, and a pipe extending through a slot in the socket, and connected to the ball for supplying fluid under pressure to the tube for forcing the saine outwardly.
3. A device of the character described, comprising an outer cylinder, a plug closing the lower end of the cylinder, a ball carried b v the plug, a foot having a socket to receive said ball, a tube-sliding within the cylinder, a packing carried by the lower end ot' the tube and engaging the bore of the cylinder, a plug closing the outer end of the tube, a hollow ball carried by the plug and a passage through the plug communicating with the hollow ball and the tube, a head having a socket to receive the hollow ball, and having a slot in one side, and a fluid supply pipe connected to the ball and extending through the slot in the socket.
