GUN WITH PEDESTAL-MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patenteclflla'l'. 1 5, 1921.
Application filed September 4, 1920. s rial no. 4138,403
To all whom izfi mayj concern: a Belt known that I, hi n'rH HALLER, residing at EsseinGermany, a citizen of the Ger- 6 man Republic, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guns with Pedestal-h/Iountings, of which the following is a specification] v i g This invention relates to guns with pedestal mountings and'consists in the special arrangement of the pointing appliances of the gun. a
. erence to the accompanying drawing, which shows a vertical section of thearrangement according to the present invention.
The pedestal mounting A of the gun, which is mounted, for example, on a platform C or on the pressure resisting structure of a submarine is of hell shape, the closed circumference of which together with I a transverse artition a )rovided in its u 361 v P i i. 1 l t indicating disk 11 arranged in the chamber part form a covered chamberB, which contains the pointing appliances of the gun and the pedestal A or the platform G, which opening can be closed and is not shown in the drawing. Between the foot a of the pedestal A and the platform 0 is inserted a packing ring. The upper carriage, D of the gun is adapted to rotate relatively to the pedestal A about the axis of the (hollow) pivot pin (l mounted thereon and carried in the upper part of the pedestal A and a ring bearing a in the transverse partition a The pivot pin (Z projects into the eham ber B and is packed in the ring bearing a by a stuffing box d Lugs (d which engage underneath a flange a on the pedestal A, prevent the upper carriage D from being lifted off the pedestal. The gun barrel E is carried on the upper carriage by means of horizontal trunnions (6 The gun barrel is elevated byturning a hand wheel F, the horizontal shaft f of which is carried on a bracket bearing (Z mounted on the lower end of the pivot pin (Z The rotation of the shaft f is transmitted by a pair of bevel wheels 7 to a hollow shaft F carried in the pivot pin al The The invention will described with refshaft F theaxis offlwhich coinci' cfls with the axis of the pivot, is packed in the pivot pin (Z by stuffing boxes 7'". Theend of the shaft Ffl which v projects between the walls of'the uppercarriage name bevel wheel "7, which fcooperates with 'a' b'evel wheel In the" shaftf'iavhich is carried on the I upper carriage and carries the bevel wheel f is mounted a spur Wheel f whichgears into a spur wheel,f The shaft f fof. this spur wheel carriesaworm j which gears into a'worm wheel 7' 5. the shaft 7? of the worm wheel 17? is mounted a spur wheel 7, which gears into a toothed arc affixed on the gun barrel. The shafts f an'd y ar-e alike carried on theupper carriage D,
The elevation imparted to the gun barrelby means of the above described pinion mechanism can be read off by the gun layer by means of fixed pointer h on an elevation B. 1 The disk H is driven independentlylof the pinion mechanism of the elevating gear from the gun barrel. For this purpose a toothed arc e mounted on the gun barrel E gears into a toothed wheel 7L mounted onthe 2 wheel Gr, the rotation of which is transmitted by two pairs of bevel wheels 9 g to a worm g, which gears into a worm wheel 9.
On the shaft of this worm wheel, is mount ed aspur wheel 19, which gears into an internally toothed gear wheel a fixed on the ring bearing a of the pedestal A. A bracket bearing (Z is provided on the pivot pin d for-the parts G, g g g g 9'' of the gearing. i '7 hen the hand wheel Gr is rotated the spur wheel travels around over the fixed toothed wheel (6 so that the upper carriage 'D and the gun barrel E are rotated on the axis of the pivot by means of the pivot pin (Z v V The traverse imparted can be read off on a traverse indicating disk J by the aid of r a fixed pointer 2' Theshaft i ofthe disk J, I
which rotates in the bracket bearing Il carries a spur wheel 2' which cooperates passedelectric cables K for a firing device 7 and other purposes. These cables are packed at the point where they enter the pivot pin by a stufiing box 70 and'at the'point where they emerge therefromby a stufling box if.
(Jlaims. v V f v 1. All arrangement oft-he class described comprising a hollowpedestal, a pivot gun, a carriage therefor, a hollow pivot pin supporting said carriage and projecting -into said pedestal, an elevating gear mounted on the gun carriage, means for operating said elevating gear positioned within said pedestal and a shaft passing through said pivot sen, Germanyftifls l0 day of June, 1920,
pin for operatively connecting the elevating gear and its operating means. i
2. An arrangement of the class described which comprises the combination IVlfih a pivotgun and a hollow pedestal of hollow pivot pin.
pivot pin rotatably m'ounted on said pedes- I means for traversing and elevating said gun, a hollow pivot pin supporting said gun on the pedestal, said operating means together with indicating devices therefor being contained inthe hollow chamber formed by said pedestal and acting through said hollow The fo'r'egoin specification'signed at Es- KURTH HAIJLER.
