Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed July 10, 1916, Serial No. 108,374. Renewed December.27, 1920 Serial No. 433.426.
1 '0. all whom it concern:
Be'it known that I, HENRY N. Ron'i'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at In dianapolis, in' the .county of Marlon and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Garment-Stand, of which the following isaspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings "and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the operations of covering garments or 'inclosing them in paper bags or sacks, the invention having reference more particularly to a stand whereby to support the garments to be covered or inclosed An object of the invention is to provide an improved stand which shall be so constructed as to be useful for various purposes and more particularly for supporting garments or a garment in convenient position to be covered or inclosed in a bag or sack.
Another object is to provide an improved garment-stand that shall be adaptable to be stationarily supported on a floor or to be readily portable so as to be placed wherever desired on the floor.
A further object is to provide a vertically extensible or contractible stand whereby to support the various articles and more particularly to support garments or wearing apparel in stores or in cleaning establishments, and especially while covering the garments to be delivered to the purchaser or owner; which garment-stand shall be so constructed as to be capable of lowering the covered garment or garments in order to permit the garment in its bag or covering to be conveniently and easily removed from the stand.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in an improved vertically extensible or contractible garment-stand constructed in a novel manner so as to support a garment and permit the garment to be readily removed thereis a horizontal section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section also on the line 2-2 of F1g. 1, and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional detail of a coat hanger arranged in a bag or sac Similar reference characters on the difierent figures of the drawings indicate like parts or features of construction herein referred to.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a floor which in order to adapt it to permanently support the improved garmentstand, particularly when a relatively tall one is desired, has an aperture 2 therein to permit a portion of the garment-stand to project downward through the floor. Such arrangement permits the garment to be supported lower than otherwise.
The improved garment-stand comprises a substantial base 3 having a vertical aperture 4 therein which referably has screw threads 5 therein. column 6 is provided which has an opening 7 extending longitudinally thcrethrough, the column being conveniently composed of a section of metallic pipe or tubing, the lower portion having external screw threads 8 that engage the screw threads 5, the said lower portion being inserted in the aperture 4. of the base. The top of the column is provided with a closure 9 which may consist of a cap provided with a central guideway 10. An extension 11 for the column is provided which has an opening 12 therein and may consist of a section of pipe or tubing, one end portion being provided with external screw threads 13 that engage the screw threads 5, said extension belng inserted in the lower end of the aperture 4. The lower end of the extension is provided with a closure 14. which may consist of a cap. The base is so arranged upon the floor as to permit the extension to project down through the aperture 2. When it is desired that the garment-stand be portable the extension 11 is'omitted and a plug 15 having screw threads 16 is inserted in the lower ends of the aperture 4. A cushion 17 of suitable material is aranged upon the plug 15, or upon the inside of the closure 14 in case the extension is made use of.
The wall of the column 6 has a vertically arranged slot 18 therein. the wall at the lower end of the slot affording a pivotal support 19 for a clutch device which comprises a head 20 having a lever arm 21 thereon. the head having an aperture 22 therein. the arm having an aperture 23 therein. The-head is arranged in the opening 7 of the column and the arm rests upon the support 15) and normally extends upwardly and out through the slot 18. Preferably a link is provided which comprises two side bars 24 and 25 to which a loop 26 is integrally connected. the bars being inserted through the aperture 23 and bent over upon the top of the lever arm 21 to form pivotal lugs 27 and 28. in case it becomes desirable to shorten the link the bars may be moved farther upward and further bent over upon the lever arm. A coil spring 1 29 is arranged in the upper portion of the column 6 under compression in contact with the-cap 9 and the head 20 of the clutch device to hold the latter yieldingly in normal position for clutching a rod 30 which constitutes the extensible portion of the stand. being arranged in the column 6 and extending through the guideway 10 and the aperture 22 and also through the spring 29. The upper portion of the rod is provided with a hook 31 arranged with its nose projected upwardly, so that a coat hanger or other article may be conveniently hung on the hook or disconnected therefrom. When the rod is lowered it rests upon the" cushion 17 and preferably is provided with a nut 32 that forms a bearing block upon the cushion and also serves as a guide for the rod.
The lever arm 21 of the clutch device may be variously operated and controlled to release the clutch from the rod 30, which is preferably done by means of a foot lever. For this purpose a collar 33 is arranged about the lower portion of the column 6 and has cars 34 and 35 to which a rivet or securing device 36 is connected and whereby the collar is clamped in place and serves as a pivoton which a foot lever 37 is supported, the latter having an arm 38 to which a pullrod 39 constituting a controlling device for the clutch is connected, the latter being connected also to the loop 26.
The garment-stand is particularly useful for supporting coat hangers 40 provided each with a hook 41 to support a garment while a paperbag or sack 42 is drawn over the garment and-the hanger.
In practical use the merchant or the garment-cleaner keeps a supply of paper bags or sacks of various sizes conveniently to the garment-stand. When it is desired to cover or inclose the garment the rod 30 is pushed up by hand if need be, which may be necessary when the garment is a long one relatively to the stand in contracted arrange ment. The rod may he forcibly pushed upward or may be more easily moved when the lever 37 is pushed downward so as to operate the clutch device and release the rod. The garments that are to be covered are placed on coat hangers and are. successively placed on the garment-stand with the hooks 41 engaging the hook 331. the garment hanging at one side of the column. after which a bag or sack of suitable size is selected and drawn down over the garment and its supporting hanger and also over the upper portion of the rod 30 and down over a portion of the column 6, the hook 41 being forced through the normal bottom of the bag or sack. In order to be able to remove the sack or bag and the garment without being compelled to lift them so that the lower end of the sack may pass over the top of the rod 30, the foot lever 37 is pressed downward and thereby the lever arm 21 is tilted so that the clutch head 20 releases the rod 30 and permits the rod to drop down to the cushion 17 or to be gently lowered by hand, after which the coat hanger is disconnected from the hook 31 and elevated so as to carry the bag or sack upward and over the top of the rod. Usually the garment is hung up by means of the hanger in a delivery wagon in order to deliver the garment without folding it or creasing it.
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new is- 1. In a garment-stand. the combination of a base having an opening extending vertically therethrough, a hollow column secured to the base in the opening thereof. a closure device for the bottom of the column, a cushion supported upon the closure device, a rod vertically adjustable in the column and being movable down to said cushion, a clutch device adapted to secure the rod to the column and provided with a controlling device that extends downward approximately to the base. the controlling device having connection with the clutch device to control its action. and a foot-operated device having connection with the controlling device.
2. In a garment-stand. the combination of an uprightly-supported hollow column having a slot in the upper portion of its wall, a cap connected to the top of the column and having a central guideway therein. a clutch head adjustable in the column and having a lever arm that extends through the slot. the arm being seated to rock on the bottom of said slot. the clutch head having an aperture therein, a rod in the column and extending movably through said slot and said guideway, the top of the rod having a hook thereon, a spring arranged under compression between said cap and said head to force the 5 head to engage and support said rod and a link connected to said arm.
3. In a garment-stand, the combination of an upright hollow column having a guideway at its top, a rod in the column 10 and extending movably through the guide- Way, the top of the rod having a hook thereon, a clutch device having a lever arm pivotally supported on the upper portion of the column, the clutch device extending 15 downwardly to the rod and being adapted to engage and hold the rod in elevated position, said arm having an aperture therein, a spring yieldingly holding said device in normal position, a link in said aperture, a collar secured to the lower portion of: said 20 column, a foot-lever pivotally supported by said collar, and a pull-rod connected to said foot'lever and said link.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
