To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LAWRENCE JONES and ISAIAH Jonas, citizens of the United States, residing at Granger, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in plural-way valves, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein a valve member coacts with each of the ports or branches to control the flow therethrough, together with means whereby all or certain of said valve members may be separably operated or all of the valve members may be operated simultaneously.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved valve whereby certain important ad vantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: V
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating in detail certain features of our improved valve as herein disclosed; and Fig.
3 is a fragmentary view in plan illustrating in detail a portion of the means for holding the shaft of one of the pinions elevated and against rotation. 7
.As disclosed in the. accompanying drawings, C denotes a T casing embodying-the branches or ports 1, 2', and 3 with the ports 1 and 2 longitudinally alined or in opposed relation. Mounted upon the branches 1 and 2 is a housing H embodying the heads 4 and 5 and the intermediate or body portion 6.
The branch 3 of the casing to the side of the branches 1 and 2 remote from the housing H is rovided with the internal valve seat 7 witi which coacts a valve member 8 suitably secured to the inserted end portion of a stem 9. The stem '9 extends through the heads 4 and 5 of the housing H. and the ortion of saidstem 9 within the housing fl is in threadedcngagement with a sleeve or barrel 10 carried by the inner head i andwhereby the valve 8 may be moved toward or from its seat upon requisiterotation of the stem 9. Carried by the inner orinserted end portion of the barrel or sleeve 10 is a gland 11 of a conventional type and which coacts in a well known manner with the stem 9.
The outer end portion of the stem 9 is disposed through a sleeve or tube 12 extending through the outer head 5 and clamped in applied position through the instrumentality of the bolt 14. The outer or exterior end portion of the sleeve 12 has aflixed thereto a hand wheel 15 and the outer end portion of the stem 9 in relatively close proximity to said wheel 15 is also provided with a hand wheel 16, preferably of a di- ,ameter less than the diameter of the hand wheel 15 so that, when required, both of the wheels 15 and 16 may be rotated in unison or, when preferred, may be separately rotated. p I
Over-lying the outer head 5 is a plate 17 and fixed to the sleeve 12 between the outer head 5' and the plate 17 is a gear wheel 18 which is adapted to mesh with either a pinion19 or a pinion .20. Normally each of the pinions 19,20 is seated within a pocket or depression 21 formed in the adjacent head 5 andwhich pocket or depression is of sufficient depth to have said pinion entirely free ofthe gear, 18 when said gear is in normal position'within its coacting pocket or recess 22.

The shaft is also capable of endwise movement and the coactin pinion is held in desired position upon said shaft through the instrumentality of the collars 24 fixed to the shaft at opposite sides of the pinions. Upon outward'move- .ment of a shaft 23, the pinion 19 or 20 carried" thereby is brought into mesh with the gear 18 and in order to maintain such operative connection, the shaft 23 is provided with an outstanding lug 25 which, when the shaft 23 is moved outwardly, passes through a notch or recess in communication with the opening 26 in the plate 17 through which said shaft is disposed When this lug-:is'
moved outwardly of the plate 17 the shaft 23 is given a partial turn whereby said lug will overlie said plate 17 and thereby hold the shaft 23 against inward movement. In order to maintain this second position of the lugs 25, we find it of advantage to provide the outer face of the plate 1 7'with a pocket or recess 27 in whicha lug 25 is adapted to seat so that the shaft 2311s maintained against accidental rotation.
Coacting with each of the branches' or ports 1 and 2 is a valve member 28, preferably of a sliding type and which coacts with a guiding sleeve 29 extending within the housing H. Operatively engaged with the valve 28 is a stem 30 which hasthreaded engagement within a tubular shaft or sleeve 31 rotatably supported by the outer head 5 and the adjacent plate 17 and bridging the space therebetween. Fixed to said tubular shaft or sleeve 31 between said outer head 5 and the plate 17 is a pinion 32 with which the adjacent pinion 19 or 20 meshes whenin mesh with the gear 18 so that,upon requisite rotation of the gear 18, either of the'valves 28 will be moved into open or closed position as may be required. It will be self-evident that with both of the pinions 19 and 20 in mesh with the gearlS and the pinion 32 of each of the shafts or sleeves 3.1, both of the valves 28 will be operated simultaneously. It will also be obvious that upon imparting unitary rotation to both of thehand wheels 15 and 16 both of the valves 28, together with the valve 8, will be simultaneously operated into either open or closed position. It is also believed to be apparent that, when desired, the valve 8 may be moved into either open or closed position independentlyof the valves 28.
From the foregoing description, it [is thought to be obvious that a valve c0nstructed in accordance with our inventionis par ticularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with whichfit may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention yis susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the'principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim 1. A body containing a plurality of valves, an operating member for one of saidvalves, a second operating member, and an operative connection between said second operating member and eachof the remaining valves, each of the operative connections between the second operating member andone of the remaining valves being independently movable into or out of working position.
2. A body containing a plurality of valves, an operating member for one of said valves, :1 second operating member, an operative connection between said second operating member and each of the remaining valves, each of the operative connections between the second operating member and one of the remaining valves being independently movable into or out of working position, and means for locking each of said connections in working position. v
3.1A body containing a plurality of valves, an operating member for one of said valves, a second operatin member, and an operative connection between said second operating member and each of the remaining valves, both of said operating members being positioned for unitary operation, each of said operative connections with the second named perating member comprising an endwise shiftable shaft and a pinion mounted thereon.

valve coacting witheach of the branches, an
operating member forone of the valves, a second operatingmembcr, and connecting means between said second operating member and each of the two remaining valves,
the connecting means between the second operatin g member and each of the last named valves bcing'movable into or out of working position. i
6. A body containing three branches, a valve coacting with each of the branches, an operating member for one of the valves, a second operating member, and inoperative connection between said second operating member, and each of the two remaining valves, the connection between the second operating member and each of the last named 1 valves being movable into or out of working position, one independently of the other.
7. A body provided with three branches, a valve coacting with one of the branches and provided withan operating stem, a member rotatably mounted on the stem, a valve co acting with each of the remaining branches a rotatable operating member coacting with each of the last named valves for moving the same into open or closed position, and a connection between each of the last named operating members and the rotatable operating member on the stem whereby the second member.
