Description

J. P. GAMMON.
DETACHABLE PEDAL FOR ACCELERATORS.
APPLICATGN FILED IULYIE, 1921- PatenwdSept. 5, 1922 INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 5,, 1922.
UNITED SATES JOSEPH I. GAMMON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
DETACI-IABLE PEDAL FOR ACCELEBATORS.
Application filed July 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH P. GAMMoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Pedals for Accelerators, of which the following is a specification.
heobject of this invention is to provide a new and. improved form of detachable pedal for use more especially in automobiles in connection with the accelerators thereof.
This and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the specifications and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
Inthe drawings:
Figure l is a perspective View of the pedal in place.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the footplate of the pedal detached.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hinge of the pedal.
Figure 4; is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts.
In the drawings, reference numeral 1 indicates the floor plate which is attached to the floor of the automobile by screws or bolts on which are formed the ears 2 and 3. The cars support a pivot pin 4 which swings the tongue 5.
A foot plate 6 is provided having a flange 7 on the lower end thereof forming approximately a half circle which receives the heel of the shoe. On the forward end of the plate I provide the blisters 8, 8 which roughen the surface and make firm engagement with the sole of the shoe. In the after part of the foot plate the cleats 9, 10, and 11 are struck down in line with each other form- Serial No. 485,693.
ing a socket for the receipt of the tongue 5.
In practice the floor plate 1 is attached to the floor of the automobile and a slit is cut in the carpet or other floor covering 12 through which slit projects the tongue '5. The carpet otherwise lies in place on the floor. The foot plate 6 is then engaged with the tongue 5 and swings therewith on the pivot pin 4c. The floor plate 1 is located so that the forward part of the foot plate will rest on the button 13 that is carried on the stem 14 of the accelerator. The drivers foot is put on the foot plate with the heel resting in the socket thereof and the foot plate is depressed at its upper end swinging on the pin 4. The foot is thus kept in the correct position for conveniently operating the accelerator to the best advantage and in the easiest possible way.
" If the use of the foot plate is not needed or it is desired to temporarily dispense with it, it can be easily detached from the tongue 5 and the tongue 5 can be laid below the carpet and the accelerator can be operated directly by the foot as is now the usual practice.
I claim:
1. In a detachable pedal, the combination of a floor plate having a tongue mounted to swing thereon, a foot plate having cleats stamped thereon forming a socket for said tongue by which said foot plate is adapted to swin on said floor plate.
2. In a detachable pedal, the combination of a floor plate having a tongue mounted to swing thereon, a foot plate having a socket formed thereon at the heel thereof to receive said tongue by which said foot plate is adapted to swing on said floor plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH P. eAMMoN.
