Be it known that I, HENRY L. Donnme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Power Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
The shovel forming the subject of this invention is particularly designed for digging trenches and here it is desirable to have the shovel in advance of the trench so that it may be supported on the round to be dug. The difiiculty' is to so handle the dipper as to cut in. this relation and still have it so that it maybe emptied with convenience and certainty. In the present invention this is accomplished. V
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1- shows a side elevation of the shovel.
Fig. 2 a View with, the dipper in an elevated position prior to emptying.
Fig. 3 a View of the position of the dipper after it is swung to position to empty.

The dipper stick 6 is of the 'usual con struction. It has a rack 7 along one face operating on a gear 8. The dipper stick is handled by a crowding engine 9 mounted on the boom, the engine operating the crank shaft 10 and the crank shaft 10 being connected by a gear (not shown) with a gear 11. The gear 11 is on a shaft 12 which-also carries the gear 8'.
A hoisting cable 13 operates over a pulley 14 at the upper, or outer end of the boom and is carried over adrum 15, the drum being actuated from a gear 16 and'the gearbeing driven from an engine 17 in the usual manner. A pull-in cable 18 is carried over a pulley 19 on the lower end of the boom to a drum 20. The drum 20 is driven from a gear 21 which is connected with the gear 16, or'other convenient mechanism with the engine in the usual manner. These drums have the usual control actuated by the levers and so that the drums may be released or thrown into operation as desired and each drum is supplied with the usual rowan SHOVEL.

The pull-in cable 18 runs under a pulley 29 in the bracket 22 and over a puliey and is secured to the rear end of the dipper.
It will be observed that the cutting edge of the dipper faces the platform. in opera tion after the dipper stick is lowered through the action of the cable 13 as it is played out the pull-in line 18 is drawn in, thus swinging the dipper toward the piatform and carrying the cutting edge into the face of the trench. The vertical position of the dipper during this action may be con ,veniently controlled by the crowding en'- gine. Afterthe dipper has received its lead the haul-1n line 18 1s released and the pnil up km 13 1s.operated and the crowding gine is heldso that the dipper swings on i the gear 8 as a pivot upwardly. As the dipper stick swings upwardly the dipper through gravity swings on the pivot until the front face of the dipper engages the cover 25. At the extremeupward iiitt o;
the stick the dipper and parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2. The dipp is held in this position, the boom swung over the side and the pull-in line is then put under strain and this pulls the rear end of the dipper up to the stop 28, thus inverting the dipper and swinging it away from the cover so that the material in the dipper is crap tied. The dipper is then swung over the trench and the hoisting line released allowing the dipper to drop to the face of'the work and the operation is repeated.

What I claim as new is':- A

In a power shovel, the combination 0 a shovel platform; a dipper stick; devices for actuating the stick from the latform; a dipper pivoted on the stick and avingits cutting edge facing the platform; and a line connected with the dipper and directioned to act as a pull-in line to effect the cutting movement of the dipper, said line swinging the di per to empt the same.

In a power shovel, the combination of a shovel platform; a dipper stick; devices actuating the stick from the platform; a dipper pivoted on the stick and. having its cutting edge facing the platform; a stop limiting the movement of the dipper relative to the dipper stick; and a line actuated from the platform and connected to the dipper for swinging the dipper against the stop, said line being positioned to act as a pull-in line. c
