S. S. MIZNER ET AL AUXILIARY ADJUSTABLE PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PIANO PBDALS Filed May 10, 1922 INVENTOR. dtqnley J. Mizmr BY Maude L. Mizner Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,526,993 PATENT OFFICE.
STANLEY S. MTZNER AND MAUDE L. MIZNER, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
AUXILIARY ADJUSTABLE PEDAL ATTACHMENT FOR PLANO PEDALS.
Application filed May 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STANLEY S. MIZNER and MAUDE L. MIZNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Adjustable Pedal Attachments for Piano Pedals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an auxiliary adjustable pedal attachment for piano pedals.
The objects of the invention are,
First, to provide an improved means for attaching such a pedal.
Second, to provide improved means of adjusting the same. 7
Third, to produce a structure which is simple and unobstructive in appearance.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
lVe accomplish the objects of our inven tion by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred einbodi ment of the invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a perspective view of our auxiliary pedal attachment before being attached to the piano.
Fig. II is a side elevational view of the same structure in position on a piano pedal, one position being shown in full lines and another position in dotted lines.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail inverted plan view of one of the adjusting joints and its thumbscrew.
Fig. IV is an enlarged detail elevation view of the foot piece joint.
In the drawing the similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The parts of the drawing will be con sidered by their numbers. 1 is a piano pedal. 2 is the bottom attaching plate of our improved auxiliary pedal provided with a yoke 3 with an internally threaded boss 4 at the top. carrying the adjustable thumb screw 5 with swiveled head 6 at its lower end. The said head is protected with a felt pad and, being slightly concave on its under sur face, seats securely when the screw is turned 1922. Serial No. 559,956.
down. The plate 2 is perforated at 8 to facilitate the construction of this swiveled head which is accomplished by upsetting the end of the thumbscrew within the said swiveled head, the tool or punch for that purpose being introduced through the hole 8.
9 is the adjustable supporting arm. 10 is the flattened attaching head of the same provided with the engaging tooth 11 for purposes of adjustment. The attaching plate 2 is provided with a similar joint head or member 21 with a series preferably of three notches 22 for engagement by the tooth 11 of the head 10. 12 is the thumb screw inserted through the joint whereby the same may be effectively adjusted, the arm 9 being set to the proper position for the tooth 11 to engage the required notch 22.
The footpiece 13 is provided with a joint member 14 similar to one of the joint members already described. The joint member 16 is on the upper end of the adjustable arm 9. These are adjusted by the thumbscrew 15 and are provided with a tooth and notched means like that already described on the lower joint.
From what we have described it will be seen that the attaching plate 2 is placed beneath the pedal 1 and the yoke properly adjusted and the swiveled head (3 screwed down on the upper surface of the piano pedal. The swivel head, being concave and padded, very accurately fits the upper surface of the pedal, owing to the loose swivel 6 of the clamping head, and the pedal is thus very firmly attached. The arm 9 is then adjusted tothe right angle to secure the proper elevation and is set by the thumbscrew 12. The footpiece 13 is then set to the right angle and the joint adjusted by means of the thumb screw 15.
While we have shown the structure with three adjustments it is very clear that the same might be provided with a larger or smaller number, but the capacity we have illustrated is found to be sufiicient for all ordinary circumstances. Only extraordinary conditions would require larger adjustment than we have here shown. The extent of the adjustment may also be varied by making the arm 9 longer or shorter.
While we have described a very superior clamp for attaching to the pedal we are aware that this attachment might be accomplished otherwise and the foot-piece 13 be adjusted as we have shown here.
a yoke with central screw threaded hole arched above said plate to embrace the pedal, a thumb screw in said threaded hole, and a swivelhead-for the-said thumb screw --for engagement with the top of said pedal, -ofan" adjustable arm with adjusting joint comprisingco-operating notched and toothed'joint parts with clamping set screw, and with'a: foot piece at the upper end of said arm ha ingan-adjustable joint com prising co operatingnotched and toothed parts with clamping set screw co-acting for the purposespecified.
2;-'Inan auxiliary pedal attachment the combinationwith an attaching clamp, of an .adj-ustablearm with adjusting joint comprising cO-Operatingnotched and toothed joint parts with clampingset screw, and
with a 'foot piece at the upper end of said I arm having an adjustable joint comprising ctr-operating notched and toothedparts with clamping set screw, coa'cting for the purpose specified.
3. In an auxiliary pedal attaclrn1ent, the combination with an attaching clamp with a plate fitted tothe under sideot the pedal,
a yoke with central screw'threaded hole arched above said plateto embrace the pedal, a thumb screw in said threaded hole, and a swivel head for the said thumb screw for engagement with the top of said pedal, of an adjustable arm with adjusting joint comprising co-op era ting notched and toothed joint partswith clamping set screw, and
with a foot piece at tire upper end of said arm, coacting for the purpose specified.
4. In an auxiliary pedal attachment the combination of an attaching clamp with a plate fitted to the under side of the pedal,
a yoke with central screw threaded hole arched above said plate to embrace the pedal, a thumb screw in said threat ed hole, and a swivel head for the said thumb screw for engagement with the top 01 said pedal,
coacting for the purpose specified. v
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals.
