FOOT REST.
Application filed January 7, 1924. Serial No. 684,856.
This invention relates to foot rests and refers more particularly to foot railsoi the swinrjinnly niounted type.
One ot the essential olrieets ot the invention is theprovision ol a loot rail'o'lf this type that may be iinished up independently r: in cnwn oi parts as will be more fully described and il'nirticularly pointed out iny the appended claims.
c ln the accompanying' drawing: j 'Figi-uro' ,l is a sectional 4top plan view of a toot rest embodying our iiivent-ion;

the numeral fl designates a pair of plates that are preferably secured at spaced points to the floor of vehicle body and that are provided with upstanding` lugs 2 to which a pair of parallely brackets 3 are pivoted.y These brackets are preferably substantially triangular .in shape and are provided at one edge With laterally extending tlanges 4l forming' feet for engagement with the floor of the vehicle body when the loot rest is in use.
rl`he toot rail 5 preferably intheform y olr a seamless 'tube that is ksupported upon a pair of tubularl sleeves 6 extending` inwardly from the inner lfaees oit the brackets 3. These lsleeves preferably tit Within the ppo` site ends of the rail F tong-ues 7 that 'extend through openings 8 in the braelets and that are rigidly scoured thereto by being bent over *ory clamped yagainst the outer faces of the brackets.
ln order that the rail 5 may be detaehably c,

i and are provide'fl With secured to the sleeif'es, the latter are preferably provided with circumferential depressions 9 orn'iing internal angularly arranged shoulders .ltland are slit longitudinally as shown at ll `so that the outer surfaces of the sleeves 6 may beexpanded agijainst the inner For expanding the sleeves, We preferablyprovide substantially trustro-conieal,Wedges 11 that lit Within the sleeves and that are adapted to bear against thecshoulders l0. The members ll are adapted toy be moved into Wedging engagement with the shoulders l() of the sleeves by means ol screwsr l2 that kthreadedly engage the members ll andthat extend through the braclccts. The screws are also adapted to clamp a pair ot concavo-eonvex plates 18 against the outer laces ofthe brackets 3 to conceal the bent over portions ol the tongues 7,
in the process of Constrnetion` the plates l.- and i8 respectively, brackets 3, and sleeves (3 are preferably assembled together and 'then painted or enameled the desired color. The rail 5 is nickel-plated and polished or other- 'vise linished land is then slipped over the ksleeves 6 and subsequently clamp-ed thereto by adjusting the screws l2 in the weddingr members ll.. Thus, the rail may be finished npindependently of the supports and may be attached thereto WithoutI being' marred or n delicedy This assembly also precludes the likelihood of the paint or enamel on the sup This assembly also permits of the replacement otl the rail yWithout the rnecessity of refinishing the support therefor.
While it is believed that from the4 fore` goingfdescription, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, ave' desire to haveit understood that We do not limit ourselves to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be le resorted to when desired as tall within the yscoe ot' what is claimed. c
l 7hat rwe Claim as our invention is:
l. In a toot-rest, a support, an expansible membern means 'for rigidly securing said e`X- pansibl'e member to said support, a foot rail telescopically engaging said member, and means independent ot' saidy first mentioned means for expanding said member for detaehably securing said rail thereto.
2. In 'a 'foot rest, a support, a longitudinally slit expansible sleeve secured to said suplill .f said port7 a. foot railtelescopically engaging` sleeve a shoulder lrormed on said sleeve and means extending' throughsaid support and engaging said shoulder for eXpLandingv said sleeve to detaehabl7 secure said rail thereto.
3. ln a foot rest, the combination with a toot rail and a. support therefor7 of a tubular member projecting` from one side ot' said support carrying said leil, means for securing` said member to said support, including a tongue at one end of the member projecting through the support, and means for concealing said securing` means.
4. In a Jfoot rest, the combination with a toot rail and a support therefor, of an expansible member projecting` `trom the support and telescopically engaQing;` Jdie rail, an element for expanding said member to secure said rail thereto, means forsecuring` said member to said support. means for corr cealing' said securing means, and means for actuating` said expanding' element and holding said concealing' means in position.
5. ln a foot rest, the combination with a foot rail and a support therefor, of an eX- pansible member projecting from the support and telescopic'ally engaging` the rail. a Wedge adapted to expand said member to secure said rail thereto. means 'orseeuring said member to said support, means for concealing' said securing means. and means for actuatino,` said expanding Wedge and holding said concealing' means in position.
6. Tn a foot rest. the combination with a foot Vrail and a support therefor. or an ei;- pansible member 1:)rojecting` trom the suport and telesco aieallv enOaO'inO the rail. an
y 21 ci D ing said member to said support means clement adapted for concealing said tongues, and means for actuating; said expanding element and holding` said concealing means in position.
.T. n a 'foot rest. the con'ibination with a foot rai?. and a suiport theretor o` an eX- pansiblel member projecting' from the supt ing said plate in concealing` position.
8. in a toot rest, the combination with a toot rail and a support therefor, oit an efipansible member projectingfrom the support and telescopicall.Y engaging the rail, an to expand sad member to retoj n'ieans for securing support, a plate for means, and a headjh sai i support and adapted to actu 1i expandingv element and to hold said p`ate in concealing` position, 9. ln a foot resty the combination with a supporting, bracket, and a ioot rail, of an eiivpansible member projecting lateinllY from the bracket teleseopically engaging the rail. and meansdetachably securing` the rail to the expansible member inclr-.dinpr a cam sur- 'tace roi "ef on the expansible member, a member cable with said cam surface the expansible member. and
secure said 'rad for erna-ndi Y an element eXtendng transversely o'' the bracket for actuating said expanding' member.
