These teeth are so constructed as to interengageand by the spring tend to prevent turningfmotion in either direction. However when side pressure ineither direction is uti-- lized on the upper pedal, it causes the teeth of the friction device to slip from one notch to the other; the movable'device' 34 causing the compression of the spring 38 in this action and the spring together with the friction device are sufficient to holdthe upper pedal.
