GRAINING MACHINE Filed June 24, 1954 2 sheets-sheet 2 23) CHARLES ZARKIN nd States Patent The invention herein disclosed relates to plate graining machines and particularly to those of the type represented by Zarkin Patent No. 2,413,898 of January 7, 1947, in which motion of the graining tub is controlled by a diamond frame confined for movement in one direction on a main supporting frame and slidingly connected with the tub on a line at right angles tothe lirst direction.
The present invention is concerned particularly with the sliding connection of the diamond frame with the tub or so-called sub-frame on which the tub is hingedly mounted.
Special objects of the invention are to assure constant and proper lubrication of the sliding connections between the diamond trame and sub-frame.
These are necessarily heavy, substantial parts, the dia mond frame having a rapid reciprocating movement and the tub having a fairly high speed circulatory movement, so continuous satisfactory lubrication is essential.
These requirements have been met in the present invention by the provision of the diamond frame with upwardly open guide channels and the tub frame with downwardly dependent rollers riding in said guide channels and receptive to lubricant introduced into and conned in said channels.
Special features of the invention relate to the manner in which the guide rollers are mounted in quicl; detachable but iir...ly held relation on the sub-frame of the tub.
Other special objects of the invention have been to improve the tilting action of the tub for running oil the graining marbles, to improve operation of the dumper for returning the marbles to the tub and to generally improve the machine for heavy duty service.
The foregoing and other desirable objects have been attained by novel features of construction, combinations and relations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed and as shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings.
The drawings forming part of the specilication illustrate a present practical embodiment of the invention but structure may be modified and changed as regards the immediate illustration, all within the true intent and Scope of the invention as hereinafter delined and claimed.

ln Figs. l and 2 the tub is indicated at 7, hingcdly KAC@ mounted on sub-frame 8 which rides on balls 9 rolling in ball cups 10 on the main supporting frame 11.
`Circulatory movement of the tub is controlled by the diamond frame 12 slidingly guided for movement in a longitudinal direction on the main frame at 13 and having a transversely disposed sliding connection with the sub-frame at 14. y Details of the latter connection are shown in Figs.'4 and 5, involving a rigid, outstanding horizontal flange 15 on the sub-frame S supporting a base plate 16 carrying a stud operating in a channel on the diamond frame.
This bearing stud is shown as made up of a bolt 17 extending down through base plate 16 and integral collar 18 closely litting in opening 19 in the mounting llange and an anti-friction roller 20 on the lower, dependent portion lof the bolt.
The collar lS locates and solidly supports the stud in the mounting llange 15 and the base plate is shown as secured in this fixed location by two bolts 21 at opposite sides of the stud. Removal oi these two bolts enables the entire stud unit, including the base, to be removed from the mounting llange.
The channel in which the bearing stud operates is shown as made up of a center casting or block having spaced parallel sides 22 connected by a solid bottom wall 23 and U-shaped end closures 24 bolted to the ends of the U-shaped channel casting. The latter is shown as having mounting flanges 25 and the end caps are shown as coniining pads 26 of felt or the like for absorbing and eX- truding lubricant as the stud roll engages these pads at the ends of its stroke in opposite directions.
Lubricant is supplied to the stud roll in the illustration by an oil cup 27 shown in Fig. 5 as connected with the stationary positioning collar 18.
The stud roll has an easy rolling engagement in the channel and lubricant supplied the roll is caught and held in the channel, particularly in the pads at the ends of the channel and each, as engaged by the roll, will deliver lubricant to the roll and then absorb and hold lubricant in the bottom of the trough-like guide.
This construction assures that the tub carrying frame will always be properly lubricated in its movements controlled by the diamond frame over long extended periods of operation and without any attention on the part of the operator.
Another special feature of the invention is the provision of a jack Z3 at each of the lifting corners of the tub, in place of a single, centrally located jack as heretofore employed. These two jacks are carried by brackets 29 on the sub-frame and the movable elements of the jacks have a free rolling engagement at fill, Fig. 2, with the underside of the tub so as to avoid any warping or twisting action. The use of the two jacks thus avoids strain on the heavy tub or hinge connections supportingthe same and the operation with the two jacks may be relatively rapid and always secure because if one jack should fail the other will be able to carry the immediate load.
Other important features of theinvention, as illustrated in Figs. l and 3, relate to operation of the dumper 31 which is shown as having crank arms 32 on opposite ends of the rock shaft 33 which supports it, engaged by the` movable .elements of the two rams 34. These movable upper elements 3S of the rams are shown as enclosed within extensible boots 36 connected with the lower elements, the latter shown pivotally mounted at 37 to allow for necessary swinging movement in the raising and lowering of the dumper.
This double ram construction assures fast, free operation of the dumper and provides a safety feature in that if one ram should fail the other will hold the dumper, an important feature in the handling of these heavy machines.
The hinge mounting for the lower end of the tubv and 3 the single cam construction for imparting circulatory movement to the tub carrying frame are not here illustrated because fully shown in prior Zarkin patents. Also, motor for driving the tub circulating frame is not illustrated, this being usually the same as shown in prior Zarkin patents. At present, however, a second motor is employed for driving the pump supplying hydraulic pressure for operating the tub raising jacksk and the rams for raising and lowering the dumper.
What is claimed is:
l. A plate graining machine comprising a main supporting frame, a tub carrying frame mounted for circulatory movement on the main frame, a diamond frame beneath said tub carrying frame coniined to longitudinal sliding movement on the main frame, upwardly faced, transversely aligned guide channels on opposite sides of the diamond frame, rigid mounting anges on the tub carrying frame having openings therethrough over said guide channels, supporting plates removably secured on said mounting anges and having xed positioning collars located in said openings and studs dependent from the tub carrying frame slidingly operable in said transversely aligned guide channels, said studs comprising bolts projecting down through said supporting plates and positioning collars, and rollers on the lower ends of said bolts `disposed in said guide channels.
2. A plate graining machine comprising a main supporting frame, a tub carrying frame mounted for circulan the diamond frame and studs dependent from the tub carrying frame slidingly operable in said transversely aligned guide channels, said studs including rollers disposed in said guide channels, means` for supplying lubricant to said rollers` and lubricating pads at opposite ends of the guide channels engageable by said rollers.
3. A plate graining machine comprising a main supporting frame, a tub carrying frame mounted for circulatory movement on the main frame, a diamond frame conned to longitudinalsliding movement on the main frame, transversely aiigned guide channels on opposite sides of the diamond frame and studs dependent from the tub carrying frame, slidingly operable in said transversely aligned guide channels, mounting anges on said tub carrying frame, said anges having openings therethrough, supporting plates removably secured on said mounting anges and said stud including bolts extending down through said plates and fixed positioning collars on said plates located in said openings.
