A. E. MORGAN GAS OOGK.
No. 806,344. v Patented Oct. '7, 1884L.
llwrrn Sra'rns ALFRED E. MORGAN, or HARTFORD, CCNNECTICUT.
GAS-=COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,344, dated October '7, 1884.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. MORGAN, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Pertaining to Gas-Cocks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a side View. Fig. 2 is a bottom View, with a portion of the cock-handle repre sented as broken away so as to show beneath it the pin which operates in connection with the stationary stops. Fig. 3 is a view of the device in vertical section, cutting the gas-pipe between the cock and the pipeclamp, and looking toward the pipe-clamp.
This is a device intended more particularly for use in connection with the cooks appurtenant to gas-burners, and intended to prevent the gas-cock from being left open when a person intends to close it.
In the drawings, the letter a denotes a gas: pipe, and b a burner, between which is the cock 0, carrying the rotary cock-plugd. The body of the cock is provided with two stationary stops, 6 and f. The cock-plug bears a pin, 9, intended to co-operate with the two stationary stops just mentioned. when the pin 1 bears against the stationary stop a, the cock is open and gas is flowing through it. WVhen the pin 9 bears against the stationary stop f, the cock is shut and the flow of gas is stopped.
The letter h denotes a pipe-clamp-that is, a clamp for attachment upon the gas-pipecomposed of two parts hinged together, with an opening between these two parts approaching an oval in shape, so that the clamp may be at tached to gas-pipesof different diameter. The clamp is pulled together at its lower end by the clamp-screw i. This pipe-clamp is a support for the spring-stop for the coclcplug, shortly to be described.
The letter j denotes this spring-stop, attached by the screw i to the pipe-clamp.
It will be readily understood that when the pin 9 is against the stationary stop f and the spring-stop is in the position shown in the drawings the cock-plug is locked from rotation in its shut position, effectually preventing any accidental opening of the cock, and effectually preventing a person from accidentally leaving the cock open in attempting to shut it.
When a person desires to open the cock, he presses the spring-stop back with his forefinger, releasing the handle of the cock-plug from its grasp, and immediately and by substantially the same motion turns the cock-plug to its open position.
The spring-stop is made longitudinally adjustable by means of the slot it, through which runs the screw which attaches the spring-stop to the pipe-clamp. This longitudinal adjustment is desirable, and even necessary, in locating the device upon a gas-pipe. The free end of the spring-stop is also laterally adjustable (laterally in the present instance meaning vertically) for the purpose of adapting it to cock-plugs of different length.
I claim as my improvement 1. In combination with a gas-burner, the retary cock-plug (Z and the spring-stop j, attached to the pipe, and bearing an arm that engages the handle of the plug, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a gas-burner, the rotary cockplug d, bearing a stop-pin, g, the stationary stop e on the body of the plug, and the spring-stop j, attached to the gas-pipe, whereby the plug is held in both its opened and its closed position, all substantially as described.
3. In combination with a gas-burner, the rotary cock-plug d and the longitudinally and laterally adjustable spring'stop j, whereby the cock-plug is held either open or shut, all sub stantially as described.
4. In combination, the rotary cock-plug d and the longitudinally-adjustable spring-stop j, substantially as described, and for the puro pose set forth.
ALFRED E. MORGAN.
