Be it known that I, DANIEL W. BROWN. a

- citizen of the United States, residing at \Vood-- bridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to enable a cuff to be secured to the wristband of a shirt with increased facility, and so as to allow said cuff to project beyond the coatsleeve with more or less exposure, as the wearers taste or convenience may dictate.

The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is a plan of a cuff, showing my fastening device in outline connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the cuff held to the wristband by the said fastening device, which latter is seen in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the fastener. Figs. 4 and 5 are side views of the buttons which may be used with the said fastener. Fig. 6 is an end view looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. 7 is respectively a side and an end view of the grasping-jaws, showing modifications therein.

In said drawings, A represents a shirt-wristband, and B a cuff attached thereto or connected therewith by a fastener, O, secured to the shank or shoe of the button or buttons D D, and lying longitudinally on the inside of the cuff, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. Said fastener G is provided with sections a a, having fulcrumal or pivotal ears b 12 formed thereon and connected by a pivotal pin or rivet, c. Coiled around said pin, and tending to cause thejaws a a of the sections a a to close or clasp together, is arranged a spring, (I, the extremities of which bear outward against the portions a a of the sections a a to close the jaws, as above stated. The said portions a a serve as finger-pieces, whereby the jaws may be separated to unfasten the cuff from the wrlstband. Projecting from one of the finger-pieces through the opposite one is formed, secured, or arranged a hook, c, to engage w1th the shank or shoe of the button and hold the fastener in proper relation to the cuff. Sa d hook may be integral with one of the sections, be soldered or otherwise fastened thereto, or be a continuation of the spiral springy as shown in Fig. 3. The said opposite finger-piece coacts with the hook to hold the fastener to the buttonshank. The jaws a have dentate extremities to more securely fasten or hold to the cloth of the wristband, and are preferably inwardly inclined, as in Fig. 7 and thus forming what may be termed a flaring mouth, to allow the jaws to be slipped over the edge of the cuff without com pressing the finger-pieces.

-It will be observed that the space between the jaws is about equal longitudinally to the distance between the buttons D D, so that the jaws may be carried a considerable dlstance inward from the edge of the wristband, thus allowing the cuff to be drawn beneath the eoat sleeve to suit the wearer. The jaws may be, and preferably are, held in a longitudinal rela tion to the cuff by the shank of the button D, which is provided with an eye, f, through which one of the jaws a is thrust, as shown I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown, as very material changes may bemade therein without departing from the spirit of the 1nvention. For example, the sections a a may be integral instead of being pivoted pleces, a single piece in this case being doubled to form the springjaws; again, in lieu of the spiral spring, one of different form and arrangement may be employed.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In combination, the buttons D D and fastener G, the former of which bu EOHS has the fastener secured to it, and the latter holds said fastener in longitudinal relation to the cuff, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination, the buttons l) D, the

latter of which has an eye, f, in the shank or shoe thereof, and a fastener caught upon one of said buttons, and having one of the grasping-jaws held in the eye of the other, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination, in a cuff-holder, the button D, provided with shanks or shoes adapted to extend through the button-holes of the cuff, and spring-actuated jaws a a, adapted to'eatch the wristband, and provided with mechanism, substantially as described, to catch the said button shank or shoe.

4. As an improved article of manufacture, grasping-jaws adapted to grasp the wristband at one end, and provided with fulcrumal ears I5 b b, a pin, 0, and a spring encircling said pin, and having one end extend up through the end a of one of said jaws and form a hook adapted to co-operate with said end a, to grasp the button shank or shoe, substantially 20 as shown and described.
