FRICTION ATTACHMENT FOR FLOUR'PACKERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 320,419, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed May 6, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES .F. WALTERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction Attachments for Flour-Packers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of flourpackers used in packing flour in barrels and sacks.
My invention consists in the mechanical devices, hereinafter described and claimed, for producing an adj ustable automatic friction attachment, by means of which an increased or decreased pressure may be communicated to the packer and a uniform pressure of any degree be maintained.
In.the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, showing the spring-case in transversevertical section. Fig. 2 is a side 2 5 elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the spring-case, with hand-lever attached by which the case and its attachments are raised or depressed. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same, showing the manner of at 0 taching the case to the hand-lever and their relative positions.

The lower portion of the rod 1 is furnished with a screw-thread, with a thumb-nut, m, above the case and a similar thumb'nut, .m, below the case, by which'the case carrying the spring can be moved vertically upon the rod 1. A hand-lever, 0, is attached to the rear surface of the springcase a, as seen at Fi 4, and is hinged to the post a at s, and is permitted at its outer end a vertical motion, and carrying with it the case a. The nut m rests against the lower surface of a collar, 1 upon which the coiled spring 0" has its bearing, and the pressure exerted by the rod 1 is communicated to the spring 0" and is met by its resistance. When the friction belt is placed on the periphery of the pulley-wheel c, and the end secured at the bracket 0, the opposite end being attached to the lever 11,- as described, the rodl is connected with the lever h, the spring-case and levero being attached. It will be seen that as the lever 0 is depressed from a horizontal to a vertical position a compound leverage is exerted upon the frictionbelt, enforcing its contact and tractile force upon the face of the wheel a, which extends over the largest part of its circumference, and which strain or pressure is rendered uniform and continuous by the action of the spring 0', which takes up any stretching or expansion of the frictionbelt d and equalizes the strain. The spherical case n is provided with a projection, a, of fan shape, with a depending lip, as seen at n, and an opening of a correspondingform is madein the lever 0, which allows the lever to pass on to the projection when it is in a horizontal position, and which retains it in place when turned down.
