UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS F. GORMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHIELD FOR BICYCLE-HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,024, dated September 22, 1896.
Application filed November 5, 1895. Serial No. 568,047. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DENNIS F. GORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shields or Guards for Bicycle-Handles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a shield or guard, as hereinafter described and claimed, for protecting the hands of the rider of a bicycle from rain, cold, &c.
Figure lrepresents a perspective view of a shield or guard embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents an end View thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a shield or guard, the same consisting of the body B, which is formed of leather, metal, wood, celluloid, or other suitable material, bent into the U V, or other proper shape, and having secured to the inner side thereof the clamp O, which in the present case consists of two jaws which are adapted to embrace the inner portion of the handle of a bicycle, and provided with the screw D, which tightens said jaws to said handle, it being seen that said body stands out from the handle sufficiently to form a chamber and allow the hand of the rider to enter said body and grasp the handle without interference, while the outer side of the body is open, so as to allow the hand to enter the chamber of the body, the bottom of the same being open, owing to the separation of the ends of the piece of material which comprises the body or hood B, to facilitate such entrance, it being also seen that when the device is in position the hand is covered and thus sheathed or guarded from rain, storm, cold, dzc.
The inner side of the body or hood is secured to the crown and sides of the wall E, which somewhat closes said side and has the arm F attached to it, said arm carrying the clamp O, the portion of the wall being cut away on opposite sides of the clamp, as at G, so that access may be had to the lever or hammer of the bell in'order to ring the latter when so desired' V The wall E is stiffened by the arm F, so as to firmly support the hood on the handle, especially at one side, the other side of the hood being open to permit the introduction of the hand to the handle, while the wall E has the recesses or passages G therein to permit the hand to reach the bell lever or hammer, the hood being bent over the handle and standing out from the same, as has been stated.
In lieu of the two jaws forming the clamp C, I may employ a screw which is connected with the arm F on the Wall E and fitted in the handle and tightened th-ereagainst by a nut, it being noticed that in Fig. 1 the screw employed is passed through the ends of the two jaws of theclamp O and has a tightenin g-nut thereon.
The device is also applicable to the handle of a push-cart and to a proper part of a carriage or other Vehicle in front of the hands of the driver.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shield or guard for a bicycle-handle, consisting of a hood having an open outer end, and an open side, a wall secured to the inner end of said hood, an arm secured to said wall, and a clamp on the inner end of said arm, said parts being combined, substantially as described.
2. A bent hood, a wall secured to one end thereof, a rigid arm attached to said wall and a clamp on said arm, said hood having its side separated and said wall having a passage between the same and the said clamp, substantially as described.
DENNIS F. GORMAN.
