PIANO-PEDAL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681 ,390, dated August 27, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES A. ELWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Pedals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to pedals of pianos or similar instruments; and its object is to provide a supplementary pedal or foot-treadle that is adjustably movable vertically of the main pedal and means of securing the same thereto whereby it is readily applied or detached.

In pianos when the performers seat is adjusted to a suitable height in relation to the keyboard the pedals are frequently at such a distance from the seat as to be beyond the reach of the player. My invention is intended to overcome this objectionable feature, which I attain by the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters designate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device applied to a piano-pedal. Fig. 2 is a vertical view, partly in section, of the same; and Figiii is a perspective view of the device attached to an organ-pedal.

Referring by letter, a indicates a supplementary treadle with a bent shank or rod support I), which fits in the socket c of the hollow post cl and secured therein to any desired height by a set-screw c. The said post d is formed with an arm f, integraltherewith and at approximately right angles thereto, and which arm is formed of a transverse section, preferably dovetail, so that when in serted into a corresponding groove formed in the main pedal 9 it will be slidable longitudinal to said pedal, but otherwise securely and firmly held as though of a single piece with the pedal. In instruments such as an organ the post dis attached to the pedal p by a box 71, fastened thereto, to receive the arm f thereof and which is locked therein by a set-screw s.

It is apparent that changes in the construc tion may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pedal having a groove or channel formed therein, and a verticallymovable foot-sustaining treadle, of a hollow post having an arm adapted to engage with the said groove in the pedal.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a piano-pedal and a vertically-adjustable supplemental pedal Ct having a rod or shank b integral therewith,

of the hollow post (1 with an arm f at approximately right angles thereto adapted to be inserted in a corresponding groove in the aforesaid piano-pedal so as to be adjustable longitudinally thereof and the said groove.
