JACOB ASSEL, OF l/VATERVILLE,
CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BERBEOKER &
OUT, A CORPORATION OF OONNEO OURTAIN POLE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,534, dated April 1, 1902, Application filed January 6, 1902. Serial No. 88,597. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB AssEL, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Waterville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in to curtain-rods, curtain-poles, and like fixtures,
and more particularly to the manner of removably attaching the balls or knobs to the ends thereof, the object being to provide means for the attachment of said knobs which if; shall be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and which will effectively hold them in place, while at the same time allowing them to be easily attached or detached.
With these and other ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated an extension curtain -rod such as is usually made of metal in the form of tubes, Figure 1 showing such a rod having knobs applied to the ends thereof and containing my invention, one of said knobs being par tially broken away to show the method of attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of one of the knobs attached to the end of the curtainn'od, the same being illustrated on an enlarged scale and taken on the line 2 2 of Fig.
5 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attaching-disk.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a curtain-rod in the form of a metal tube, one
40 section thereof fitting Within the 0th 'and provided on the ends withthe hollow knobs or balls B, also made of metal. Each of these knobs is constructed of two sections 0 D, the edges of which are flanged and looked, as shown at E, the section O being provided with a hole or opening F to permit the entrance of the rod A, Within the knob is contained knob and through a disk G, formed from steel or other spring metal, the edge of which is confined and locked between the flanged edges E of the sections O D. This disk is provided with the radial slots I-I, forming tapering spring-fingers I, which are curved outwardly and in the direction in which the rod A is passed into the said disk, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 4:, these spring-fingers bearing upon said rod and having sufficient tension to securely hold the knob in position and at the same time allow it to be pulled or slipped oif the end of the rod when desired. By rea- 6o son of the fact that the opening F, formed in the section O, is of such a size as to nicely contain the rod A the knob is practically supported at two places-that is, at the opening F, where the rod enters, and Where said spring fingers I bear on and around the rod-this construction and arrangement effectively preventing any shake or movement of the knob upon the latter.
While I have described and illustrated my invention as applied to a tubular extension curtain-rod, it will be understood that it is equally well adapted for use in connection with wooden poles and other like fixtures wherein the knobs are to be relnovably held 7 5 upon the ends thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ball or knob for attachment to curtain 8o poles or rods, said knob consisting of two sections having their adjacent edges locked together, and a disk having its edge locked between the adjacent edges of said sections and provided with spring-fingers adapted to bear upon said rod and removably hold the knob thereon, substantially as described.
2. A hollow knob'or ball consisting of two sections having their adjacent edges flanged and locked together, one of said sections being provided with an opening, and a disk formed of spring metal having its edge clamped between the flanged edges of said sectionsand provided with radial fingers bent and shaped as described, in combination with Haven and State of Connecticut, this 2d day a curtain-pole, the end of which is adapted of January, A. D. 1902. to pass through the opening in said section and between said radial fingers whereby the JACOB ASSEL' 5 knob may be attached to and detached from Witnesses:
said pole, substantially as described. J AMES E. OAVANAGH, Signed at -Waterville, in the county of New 1 ADAM WENDEL.
