Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 13. 1906. Serial No. 326,133.
T0 at whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER A. VVEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Port, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Doll, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls. l 1. The object of the invention is to provide a. simple and inexpensive doll having improved means for manipulating the arms and legs so as to cause them to simulate the movements of a human being.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspeetive view of a doll constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the handle, together with the head and leg operating devices. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View showing one of the arms with the spring-pressed thumb.
Like reference-numerals indicate corres ending parts in the different figures of the c rawings.
It may be premised that the improved doll of this invention can be made of any desired shape, size, and form, it being understood that the exterior appearance of the doll does not form any part of the present invention and does not interfere with the operation thereof, for which reason such external appearance can be altered to suit various tastes.
In constructing a doll according to the present invention the body portion 1 thereof is hollowed out in any suitable way to fo m an internal hand-chamber 2 into which the hand of the person who is to manipulate the doll can be readily inserted through a hand-opening in the rear of the body portion 1. The arms 3 of the doll are provided with finger-sockets 4, which communicate at their rear ends with the handchamber 2 in the body portion 1, so that after the hand has been inserted into the chamber 2 the thumb can be fitted into the finger-socket of one arm and the forefinger can be fitted into the finger-socket of the other arm, whereby the two arms can be moved with respect to each other by simply manipulating the thumb and forefinger. The arms 3 preferably are formed of rough flexible materialsuch, for example, as sackcloth or burlapin order that the fingers may readily retain their position in the finger-sockets and be prevented from easily slipping outward therefrom.
It is to be understood that when the doll is small enough in proportion to permit the forefinger and thumb to extend throughout practically the entire length of the arms 3 said arms can be made entirely of cloth but when the (loll is made so large in proportion that it will be practicable to form the fingersockets only in the upper ends of the arms 3, as indicated by the dotted lines in the drawings, the outer ends of said arms beyond the finger-sockets will of necessity be stiil'ened in any suitable manner, so that when the thumb and forefinger are moved the outer ends of the arms 3 will be correspondingly operated.
It is desirable to mount in the thumb 5 of each arm of the doll a spring or equivalent device 6, which will 'yicldingly force said thumb toward the adjacent linger 7, so that any amusement device, such as the drumstick 8 and drum or sounder 9, can be detachably engaged with the hand by fitting it between the spring-pressed thumb 5 and linger 7. It will be seen, therefore, that when the arms 3 of the doll are operated the drum-stick 8 can be caused to beat upon the drum or sounder 9. A peculiar advantage of the s ring-operated thumb 5 is that when ever c csired the drum-stick 8 and drum 9 can be removed in order to permit other devices to be detachably connected with the arms of the doll. For example, by removing the drum and drum-stick a miniature sword can be placed in the right hand of the doll, and a small shield can be connected with the left hand, so that two of the dolls can be manipulated by different people to cause them to fight a duel.
Located in the center of the hand-chamber 2 in the body portion 1 of the doll is a handle 10, which is connected at its upper end with the head 11 of the doll by means of a coilspring 12. hen the hand of the person who is to manipulate the doll is inserted into the hand-opening 2, the two lower fingers of the hand are caused to grasp the handle 10, and in this way a firm grip upon the doll is obtained. Furthermore, the coil spring 12 permits the head to nod back and forth upon the handle 10 It is preferable that the upper portion or collar of the coat of the doll be flexible in its nature and secured in any suitable manner to the head 11, so as to permit the nodding motion thereof upon the spring 12.
The legs 14 of the doll preferably are flexibly connected with the body portion in any suitable manner and are articulated at their knee-joints, as indicated at 15. Themeans for operating the legs 14 preferably consists of a pair of leg-operating devices 16, pivotally mounted upon the lower end of the handle 10 at 17 and each consisting of a finger-piece 18 and an arm 19, which is angularly disposed with respect to the finger-piece and extends downward into the upper portion of the adj acent leg 14. By manipulating the fingerpieces 18 with the lower fingers of the hand the legs 14 can be readily operated to simulate the movements of a human being in dancing'or walking. For this purpose one of the fingerpieces 18 is extended upward beyond the other, so that it can be operated by the second lowest finger of the hand, while the short finger-piece can be operated bythe lowest or little finger of the hand, as will be apparent.
The improved doll of this invention is calculated to afford a great deal of amusement by reason of the fact that a single hand inserted into the chamber 2 can be used for manipulating the arms and legs and for causing the nodding of the head.
What is claimed is 1. A doll having a hand-chamber in the body portion thereof, movable arms having finger-sockets communicating with said handchamber, and means for detachably securing amusement devices to said'arms.
2. A -doll having a hand-chamber in the body portion thereof, movable arms having finger-sockets communicating with said handchamber, and spring-operated thumbs for detachably securing amusement devices upon said arms.
3. A doll having a hand-chamberin the body portion thereof, movable arms having finger-sockets communicating with said handchamber, movable legs connected with said body portion, and means located in said handchamber for operating said legs.
4. A doll having a hand-chamber in the body portion thereof, movable arms having finger-sockets communicating with said handchamber, a handle located in said handchamber, and a flexible connection between the handle and the head of said doll.
5. A doll having a ha'ndchamber, movable arms, a handle located in said hand-chamber, movable legs connected with said doll, and leg-operating devices pivotally mounted upon said handle.
6. A doll having a hand-opening in its back and a hand-chamber in the body portion thereof, movable arms having finger-sockets communicating with said hand-chamber, said arms having spring-operated thumbs for detachably holding amusement devices, a handle mounted in said hand-chamber, a coilspring connecting the upper end of said handle with the head of said doll, articulated legs connected with said body portion, and leg operating devices pivotally mounted upon said handle and comprising fingerpieces and angularly-disposed arms projecting downward into said legs, the finger-piece of one of said leg-operating devices being longer than the finger-piece of the other.
7. A doll provided with movable arms having finger-sockets and spring-operated catches for detachably securing amusement devices upon said arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
