To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. BENEDICK,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, in the county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Shovels, of
' which I declarethe following to be such a full and clear specificationas to enable those skilled in the art' to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to machines which are used for the purpose'of shoveling large amounts of earth by power, and the object of the invention is to-make a shovel that will be strong enough to stand the hard service of such machines.
A further object of the invention is to make a shovel that will have the capability of acting toward the car which supports the frame as well as in a direction u wards, as is the common style of such shove s.
The common ty e of shovel is used with a cable which lifts t e shovel from the ground with the full power of the engine, but it is often necessary to make the shovel take out ground that has been left in the forward movement of the shovel, and the shovel must then be dropped down on the dirt pile, or the bucket turned over in order that the pile of dirt that has been left may be broken up.
Another object of this invention is to make a shovel which will be capable of digging the ound toward the car as well as away from it, and since the arrangement of the boom and mast, with its cables is such as to make it possible to work the shovel toward the car the shovel can take out the leavings of ground that with many machines must be taken out by hand, or by moving the ma chine bodily.
In the drawings, -in which like numerals of reference are applied to like parts throughout, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a art of a car with the shovel in place, and Flg. 2 is a 'front view of the car with the boom and lifting arm taken off.
Only a part of the car is shown, the car being broken away in the middle. The car 13 supported by the wheels 1 on the frame of which is carried the bolster 2 which supports" the bed 3 of the car. Near the front end of the car there are two u rights 23 which are secured together at their tops by means of the girder 5, said posts and girder belng braced in their laces by the braces 4 which incline toward t e top of the posts 23 from a oint in the rear. Near the center of the ame thus formed is placed the double osts 6 which are secured together and whic are free to turn in a plane at right angles with the posts 23, side posts 6 having a large pulley :7 at the bottom and about which runs the cable 8 which is used for the purpose of turning the shovel to any desired position, the cable leading to any suitable power drum.
The double posts 6 carry the shovel 18 by means ofthe boom 11 and handle 17, the
I boom 1 1 being pivoted in two plates near the bottom of the osts 6 and being free to move in a vertical p ane. The shovel handle 17 is pivoted on the end of the boom 11 and it also is free to move in a vertical plane. The movements of the boom 11, handle 17 and shovel are controlled by means of the cable 20, the lifting arm 12 and the cable 21.
The cable 20 is secured at one end to a oint near the middle of the under side of the 00m 11, it then passes around a pulley 27 carried by the under side of the shovel handle 17, and back to a point near the bottom of the boom 1 1, where there is secured in the ivoted p0sts6 a small pulley 25, shown in otted lines in Fig. 1, then it passesdown around another pulley 26 which is carried by the frame of the car, and then to the drum 10. The upper cable 21 is secured to the posts 6 at one end from which point it asses to the pulley 28 carried by the top of t e shovel handle 17 then back to the ulle 24 and down around a pulley at the side of the ulley 26 and up to the drum 9. NoW it W' be observed that these ropes pass so near to the center of motion of the posts 6 that the cables are not injured in any way when the posts are turned to one side for the turning is made in vertical parts of the ropes.
The ropes above described are for the urose of handling the shovel on the end 0 the boom, but it is also necessary to handle the boom, and this is done by means of the arm.

It will also be observed that there is a further advantage in the construction shown on account of the location of the ulleys below the car frame since it makes t e pull on the drums 9 and 10 down and thus there is no tendency for them to be shifted should thriy be insecurely fastened to the car body. t is thought that the operation of the machine will be clear from the above description. The boom 11 can be pushed down or raised with the full ower of the engine 16, and the shovel may e positively handled in the same way by reason of the fact that it has cables attached to it above and below the oint at which it is pivoted to the. boom 11. hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, modifications within the scope of the appended claims being expressl reserved.

In a steam shovel, t e combination of a platform, a vertical frame carried thereby, a mast pivoted at its top in said frame and at the bottom in the platform, a boom pivoted at. its lower end to the mast and near the bottom thereof, a rigid arm pivoted to the boom, means on the mast to forcibly raise or depress the raising arm, and a shovel carried by the boom.
2. In a steam shovel, the combination of a platform, a frame carried thereby, a mast pivoted at its top in said frame and at its bottom on said platform, a boom carried by the mast and adapted to have a movement in a end to the boom, means to forcibly raise and depress the raising arm, a shovelcarried by the 'boom, and means to forcibly raise and depress the shovel.

7. In a steam shovel, the combination of a shovel body and teeth carried by the body extending in the front and in the rear of the shovel body.
8. In a steam shovel, the combination of a power shovel body, teeth carried by the body and extending in the front and in therear of the shovel body, and means to move the shovel to the front and the rear.
9. In a steam shovel, the combination of a platform, a frame carried by the platform, a mast pivoted in the frame and on the platform, meansto rotate the mast in a horizontal plane, a boom carried by the mast and pivoted to the same near the bottom thereof, a raising arm carried by the'boom and passing through the mast, means carried by the mast to raise and depress the arm, a shovel carried .by the boom, means to raise the shovel and means to draw the shovel toward the plat.- form.
