warns-mares Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19, 1908.

Serial No. $39,393.
To all whom itma-y concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in W'atenI-Isaters, of which the followingisa specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in water heaters and more pan operation and reducing the cost of manufacturing the heater.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a portable instantaneone "water heater, said 'water heater having details of construction, as will be more any set forth hereinafter and claimed.
' Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken centrally on a line with the inlet and outlet pipes of the heater. Fig. 2, is a View in'pers ective showing the superheating drum in etached position and a portion of the coil of pipe connected thereto, and Fig. 3, is a horizontal section taken through the casing above the top of the superheating drum, showing the latter in to plan view.
In the drawings, a in icates the inlet pipe leading from a source of water supply (not shown) to the water inlet valve 6, c the coil, (2 the superheating drum, e the water outlet fitting, f the casing of the water heater, and g a burner connected to a pipe h which may he detachably secured to a pipe leadingirom a source of gas supply, not shown.
The coil is formed from a pipe 3 which extends from the valve 1) into too casing f throuph a hole in the side of the casing ad acent t is lower edge of the casin and is then coiled from the bottom upward toward the top of the casing in the form of a truncated cone, then downward on the inside of the first layer to the startin ppint and" then upwarr on the inside of the second layer to the top of the same, then outward and upward to the end 4 which is externally screwthreaded, as shown in the drawing.
The superheating drum (1 is in the form of a fiat circular drum located in the casing f over the coil 6 and having the internal screwthieaded inlet boss 5 on the bottom at one side to which the screw-threaded end 4 of the coil 6 is attached and the oppositely-disposed externally screw-threaded outlet pipe 6 which extends upwardly from the toof the drum d through a hole in the top oi the casing f, as shown in the drawing.
The water outlet fitting f is in the form of a goose-neck pipe having the internally-screw threaded end Tattached to the outlet pipe 6, thereby clampingthe to of the casin f between an annular shoul er on the out-Int pipe 6 and the end 7'of the fitting f and securing the drum d to the top of the casing f, as shown.
Thecasing f has the closed top 8, the cylindrical sides9, the open bottom 10, and the legs ll 11 adapted to support the heater in a position to form an annular space between the open bottom of the heater and the surface on which theheater is en ported.
The burner g is preferably a aptedto burn gas, butmay be of any form adapted toburn %asolei1e, naphtha, alcohol or any inflammale substance.
In the operation of my improved water heater the water is turned on by opening the valve 5 and the burner g lighted. The heatfrom the burner g rises in the casing f through the coil 0 to the top of the casing, where it surrounds the superheating drum d. The water is forced through the outer layer of the coil 0 from the bottom upward, then from the top downward through the intermediate layer and then from the bottom upward through the inner layer, then out through the end 4 of the pipe 3 into the superheating drum d where it s reads out-.in a thin layer and from which it is forced outward through the outlet pi e 6 and the outlet fitting e into the receptao e for whichthe hot water is intended. The water in its passage through the. coil 0 and drum (2 is first slightly heated in the outerlayer of the coil, then further heated in the intermediate coil, then still further heated in the inner layer of the coil and then brought to hold the greatest intensity of heat in its passage through the thin superheating drum d which is located directly above the source of heat ener y and is adapted to bring the water to the oiling oint or any intermediate degree, controlle y regulating the amount of Water passed through the coil 0 and drum (1 and the size of the flame from the burner g.
It is evident that the coils forming the coil 0 could be spaced if desired and that any means can be used for detachably securing the pipes a and h to a source of water and gas supply, Without materially afi'ecting the spirit-of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;-
1. In a water heater, a coil formed from a pipe coiled upwardly in the form of a truncated cone, a second coil on the inside of'the first coil and connected thereto, a third coil on the inside of the second coil and connected thereto, a superheating drum connected to the upper end of the last named coiled pipe, said drum being composed of a horizontall disposed flat chamber co-extensive with t e base of the coils, an outlet ipe connected to the superheating drum, an an '0 en bottom casing having a closed top and s1des inclosing the coils and superheating drum.-
2. In a water heater, a valve, a coil formed from a pipe connected with the valve and extending upwardlyinto the heater in the form composed of a horizontally disposed chamber connected to the upper end of the last named coil, an outlet pipe connected to the superheating drum, and anopen bottom casing having a closed top, and sides inclosing the coils and superheating drum.
3. In a water heater, a valve, a coil formed froma pipe connected with the valve and extending into the heater, said coil extending upwa in the form'of a truncated cone, a
second coil on the inside of the first coil, and
connected thereto, a third coil on the inside of the second coil and connected thereto, a su erheating drum, composed of a horizonta 1y disposed chamber coextensive with the base of the coils connected to the upper end of the coiled pipe, an outlet pipe connected to the superheating drum, an open bottom casing having a closed top and sides inclosing the coils and superheating drum, means for heating the coils and superheating drum, and
means for supporting the heater in a position 5 .of the second coil and connected thereto, said 6 third coil havin a screw-threaded upwardly directed end, a orizontallydisposed flat'su perheating drum disflposed co-extensive with the base of the 00' s having an-internally screw threaded boss ada ted .0 receive the upwardly directed threa ed end of the third coil, an outlet pipe connected to the superheating drum, an outlet fitting in the form of a goose neck, having one end connected to said outlet pipe of the superheating drum, a cas' having a closed to an open bottom, and s1des inclosing-the coili', and superheatin drum, and means for heating the coils an su erheating drum.
n testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. HENRY W. CARTER. Witnesses:
