Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed October 13, 1909. Serial No. 522,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST G. BAUER, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of that class of book holders which are adapted to be detachably connected with the arms of chairs or the projecting portions of desks, tables or other pieces of furniture.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction of book holder having improved means for supporting a book in readable position; to provide improved means for adjusting the various parts of said holding device to diiferent positions and to produce certain improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the ac companying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved book holder, Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, the sectional portion of the View being taken on line w0a of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line g -g of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 1 is a plan View of the book holding and bracket plates.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a suitable chair arm clamp 1, which is preferably in the nature of a C-clamp, as shown in the drawing, the lower arm of said clamp having a threaded opening formed therein, through which passes and with which engages a desirable form of clamping screw 2, the head 2 of which is adapted to bear against the underside of a similar parts chair arm 3 or other piece of furniture,
while the upper arm of the clamp engages the upper side of the member 3. In order to prevent injuring the surface of the furniture member with which the clamp is connected, I may provide the underside of the upper arm of said clamp and the upper side of the clamping screw head 2*, with a pad ding 1 of felt, leather or other yielding material.
In forming the clamp 1, I provide the upper arm thereof, with a projection 1 in which is formed a vertical socket, as shown. This socket is adapted to receive the lower rounded pin-like bearing extension 5 of an upwardly extending bar 5, said pin being adapted to be secured in its socket in the desired position through the medium of a set screw 6. The upper end of the vertical bar 5 has pivotally connected therewith one end of a bar 7, while a similar bar 8 is also pivotally connected with the lower portion of said upright bar 5. These bars 7 and 8 are retained parallel one with the other and have their outer ends pivotally connected at 7 and 8 with the upper and lower ends of the transverse head 9 of a T-shaped supporting arm 9.
At the junction of the members 7 and 5, I pivot the upper end of a curved bar or rack segment 10, the latter having formed therein a zigzag slot 11, which extends throughout the greater portion of the length of the bar. Through this slot extends a pin 12 which projects from the rear face of the bar 8, said pin being adapted by engagement with one of the internal teeth or shoulders formed as a result of the zigzag construction of said slot, to prevent the dropping downward of the bar 8 and the members 7 and 9. It will be understood, however, that a downward movement of said frame members may be attained by swinging the segment 10 out-.
ward and upward until the pin 12 is out of the path of engagement with the teeth or shoulders of the slot.
Slidably mounted upon the supporting arm 9, is the lower portion of an upwardly projecting post 13, the latter being provided with an enlarged head upon which is pivoted one end of a horizontal plate or bracket arm 14. The outer and wider end portion of this bracket arm is formed at opposite points, with upper side hinge barrels lt through which passes a hinge rod 15. The outer ends of the hinge rod are j ournaled in rounded hinge members 16 which project from the lower portion of a book supporting plate 16, said plate below said hinge members having an outturned ledge 16*. Rigidly connected with the rear side of the plate 16 is one end of a rearwardly extending and downwardly curved finger 17, the latter passing through an opening in the bracket arm'lt and also passing through an eye or loop termination 18 of a horizontal screw 18, the latter passing through an opening in an upturned bearing lip 14,- whichis formed with one side of the bracket arm 14:. The outwardly extending threaded; stem of the screw 18 is provided with a thumb nut 19 which when turned upward intoen'gage-L ment with the outer end of the lip or hook member- 1 1 resultsin moving the screw'181 outward and in looking the eyeorloop termination 18 of the screw intofrictionalen gagement with the finger 17.
' o By the employment of a setscrew 13 which passes through a threaded opening in the lower end of the post 13, said post 13 is clamped at the desired point on the supporting arm 9. Adjacent to each end of the book holding ledge 16 and on the underside 7 thereof, I secure one end of a spring leafholding'wire 20, these wires extending from their fastening points toward each other and outward over the edge of the ledge, said wires being so bent as to impart thereto a tendency of the free ends of the wires toward pressing inward against the face of the plate 16. These free terminals of the wires are formed, as shown, with upright coils such asare indicated at 20*.
In utilizing my invention, it will be understood that an open book is designed to be supported upon the outturned ledge 16 of the plate 16, the back or cover members of the book bearing against said plate 16. The book as will be understood, is held in the open position by the engagement of the coiled spring terminals 20 with the bases of the pages and when it is desired to turn a leaf of the book,
I these spring leaf-holding members are temporarily pressed outward and permitted to engage'the outer edge of the'ledge. As will readily be seen, the angle at which the book is supported is dependent upon the position of the finger 17 with relation to the bracket I arm .14 and by loosening the nut Y19 and thereby freeing the screw 18, said finger maybe moved upward ordownward in the opening of said bracket arm. In order to provide for the desired elevation of the book supporting plate, it is obvious that the segment 10 may be swung upward to cause a temporary disengagement of the pin 12 from the teeth or shoulders of said segment slot, thus permitting of the swinging of the parallel bars 7 and'8 either up or down, with a consequent raising or lowering of the supporting arm 9. By loosening the set screw 6, it is evident that, the entire supporting frame may be swung on the pivot 5*, thus permitting of the adjustment of the book support to a desirable position for use. ;-It will be understood that my improved book holding device may be conveniently employed in connection with chair arms,
desks or the projecting portions of other pieces of furniture.
From, the foregoing description, it will be seen that simpleand' efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is
1. In a' book support, the combination with a clamping member and an upright bar pivoted therein, of two parallel bars pivotally connected at their inner ends to said upright bar, one above the other, one of said parallel bars being provided with a laterally-projecting pin, a toothed segment pivotally connected at one end to said upright bar, the teeth of the segment being adapted 'to successively engage with said pin, a T- shaped supportingarm, the transverse member of said arm being pivotally connected at its ends to the outer ends of the parallel bars, and a book-holding member adj ustably mounted in said supporting-arm.
2. In a book holding device, the combination with a furniture clamping member and a supporting frame comprising pivotal] y connected members supported from said clamp, of a book holding member comprising a plate having an outturned ledge, an arm hinged to said plate and pivotally connected with said supporting frame, a curved finger extending from said plate through an opening in said arm, and means for locking said finger in connection with said arm, said means comprising a member transversely movable with relation to said arm, and a screw 'for moving said member, said finger also passing through said transverse member.
