Pseudotropheus elegans is living in sandy environments with some spread boulders or tree stumps which lie in the water. This is a species with some color variants which can be found in Chilumba Bay and near Chitande Island, Ngara, Itungi and Kasinda. This variant can be found near Itungi in the north of the lake. In trade this variant is still offered with the old name Pseudotropheus sp."acei" Itungi. The males of these species can grow to about 10 cm in the lake. In the aquarium however they can grow taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 16 cm, females grow to about 14 cm. Pseudotropheus elegans is one of the most peaceful cichlids of the lake, mutual and against other species they are very tolerant. They can be hold best with multiple females and other fish that live in the same environment, in a tank with enough swimming space and hiding places. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with algae and invertebrates. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. Food rich of algae like spirulina pellets or flakes is very important to them so this should not be missing on their menu.
