Portrait of Grandma Moses painted by Lisel Salzer in the summer of 1947, when she was visiting friends in Eagle Bridge. Shows Moses seated in a wooden chair wearing a white lace trimmed dress with a black band (2004.595.4) around her neck and handkerchief pinned at her neck with a brooch (2004.595.2). Hair up in the bun she is usually seen with and she is also wearing wire rimmed glasses. Painting in distressed wood frame with traces of red and white paint. Back has "Grandma Moses N F S" written on it several times and a paper with "Property of Lisel Salzer" typed on it and taped to the top of the frame. |

Information | In 1947, while passing though Eagle Bridge, New York, Lisel Salzer was asked if she would like to meet Grandma Moses. Salzer was an artist herself and she responded enthusiastically to the invitation. This portrait is the result of that chance meeting. Salzer asked Moses if she would like to paint while being painted, but Moses preferredĀ to "pose like a lady." |
