Professional Soccer Player. FIFA World Cup Champion 1954. Midfielder for 1 FC Kaiserslautern in Germany from 1938 to 1959 (and as player-coach from 1945 to 1949), with 327 goals in 384 games and two German championships in 1951 and 1953. Represented Germany 61 times between 1940 and 1958, scoring 33 times. As German captain, he won (with his brother Ottmar) the World Cup in 1954 against Hungary in a come from behind 3-2 win in what was later called "The Miracle of Bern" (as Hungary had defeated Germany 8-3 in a preliminary round). He also played for Germany in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, where an injury in the semifinals effectively ended his career. 1 FC Kaiserslautern's stadium was renamed to Fritz-Walter-Stadion in 1985 in his honor, and he was the first player named as an honorary captain of the German national team, in 1958.
