Fans are celebrating Mewtwo’s birthday today February 6, but why is that? The most powerful and mysterious Pokémon of the first generation of games is quite special.

Every year, on February 6th, one of the most popular Pokémon of all—and one of the most powerful and fearsome of the First generation of the games—celebrates its birthday. We are talking about Mewtwo, the powerful Psychic-Type Pokémon introduced for the first time in the series in the Red and Blue versions (or Red and Green in Japan).

Mewtwo, the deadliest Pokémon of the First Generation, celebrates its birthday today, February 6

It’s known that Mewtwo’s “birthday” is this day thanks to a text note that someone left on the Pokémon Mansion in which you can read the following message: “Diary: February 6. MEW gave birth. We named the newborn MEWTWO”. Of course, in the remakes Pokémon Fire Red and Pokémon Leaf Green on Game Boy Advance you can also find this same message.

In the Switch remakes, Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee! And Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! These specific lines of text were modified to remove any trace of doubt: Mew is not Mewtwo’s “mother” but was instead used as the basis for his genetic material. The message was instead “Diary: Feb. 6. We obtained a new Pokémon from Mew. We have named this new Pokémon ‘Mewtwo’”.

In any case, in all versions of the games the lore from Mewtwo is the same: scientists found Mew in Guyana, South America. They caught it, and took him to the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island in Kanto. There, scientists recombined Mew’s DNA to create Mewtwo. But Mewtwo’s power was so brutal that they could not contain him. He destroyed the place and then sought shelter in the Celeste Cave. And it is precisely in this place where we were originally able to capture such a beast.

Mewtwo’s very high stats in the First Generation of the games made him a great choice on his own merits. A must-have on any Pokémon team worth it’s salt. Its power is such that basically the only way to stop a rival Mewtwo was with our own Mewtwo. And if that were not enough, with the passage of time and with the introduction of Mega Evolutions in the games, it acquired two new forms: Mega-Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting, specialized in Attack) and Mega-Mewtwo Y (Psychic, specialized in Special Attack).

Nor can we ignore that its popularity reached such heights that in Super Smash Bros. Melee he debuted as a fighter and is still a playable character in all the games in the series since then. This, in turn, has also meant that it has its own amiibo from Nintendo.
