I have looked EVERYWHERE, i can think, but nowhere does it tell me how to actually install an FVWM theme! Gentoo users, oh gods' of the linux world, if anybody can help me you cAN! please!!!!! what have i not done correctly? |

Funny. I got the fvwm-crystal package but when trying to compile it, it says something like "your fvwm version is 2.5.10 which is older than the current version of 2.5.8". (The actual #s might be different, but you get my point). _________________ "The obvious mathematical breakthrough would be development of an easy way to factor large prime numbers" [Bill Gates, The Road Ahead, p.265] |

IMHO the best way to install fvwm-crystal is to copy what is in /usr/share/fvwm-crystal/fvwm in ~/.fvwm (you can then easily modify the config files is something goes wrong)
Then just use fvwm2 or fvwm-crystal to launch fvwm. I just did it quickly that way and it seems to work |

Did you install it through portage or with a package on the official site? I don't know fvwm-crystal, but this is an obvious bug (10 is lower that 8 cause it begins with a 1 ) that should have been fixed. If not, try to search in the install scripts (or in the ebuilds?) where this comparison is done, and modify it to make the test always pass. |

I use fvwm-crystal and know quite a bit about it now. First off I highly recommend fvwm-2.5.12 and fvwm-crystal-12-24-2004.
Karnevil was quite right in that everything that is emerged into /usr/share/fvwm-crystal/fvwm should be copied over to ~/.fvwm for purposes of editing and upgrading.
At the end of the ebuild did you follow the instructions. I can't remember what they were off the top of my head but you needed to copy .Xsession from /usr/share/fvwm-crystal/addons to your home dir. and there might have been something else but I will check the ebuild later.
Fvwm-crystal is excellent and there is alot of features that are there so stick with it. Post exactly what is going on if you are still having problems. I have figured most everything for crystal so don't hesitate to ask. |

Well i haven't gotten round to copying the files into my home dir (will do soon, its about time for an upgrade - handy hint that ), but have had no serious problems with crystals use
Its been a fair few months now, and yes it does look gorgeous.
Some niggles getting it to read my .Xresources properly - i finally had to add the line Code: | cat /home/kleeks/.Xresources | xrdb | to my ~/.xinitrc to overcome this (now i get nice borderless transparent aterms opening on whims) - there is proberbly a mroe eloquent way of sorting this out, however i always beena quick fix guy
the documentation is not great, but the config files are well commented and once i'd worked out that gentoo dumps them in usr/share instead of home it was all fine and dandy (lol spent a few frustrating nights editing my fvwm files in home befpore realising this)
the gentoo decs are a must, and oooh, if i haven't got a screenie lurking >> http://homepage.ntlworld.com/kleeks/screenshot-20050225_1906.jpg (mellow mood shot) |
