One of the most instrumental graphic designers of the twentyfirst century digital world, April Greiman, is a visionary when it comes to the marriage of design and digital technology, and was one of the first people to demonstrate how beneficial computers can be.

Greiman was born in New York in 1948. Years later, she applied to the Road Island School of Design, and was turned down due to her lack of ability to draw an old boot as part of the application process. But the reviewer was impressed by the design in her portfolio and encouraged her to apply to Kansas City Art Institute. She was accepted into the graphic design program, without really knowing what “graphic design” was. After graduating from Kansas City Art Institute, she went on to study for a year at the Basel School of Design. She studied under the renowned Armin Hofmann and Wolfgang Weingart, both very well known and influential designers. Because of them, she was very influenced by the International typographical style and by Weingart’s introduction to the style later known as New Wave, an aesthetic less reliant on Modernist heritage. This later laid out the true groundwork for her personal design style. You can see this influence by her implementation of photo and text, also by the clean layout with bold text. In 1984 Greiman purchased her first Macintosh computer, and began exploring the possibilities of design with computers. At the time there was a real negative stigma about computers that made some designers nervous. Greiman contributed to the American design movement by perpetuating a new typographic wave rejecting style and breaking out of the previously existing restrictions of typographic communication. She eagerly utilized the new technologies introduced. She was commissioned to design an issue of Design Quarterly magazine she decided to showcase some of the capabilities of the Macintosh computer and its software. Titled “Does it make sense?” she designed a 2’x 6’ foldout poster that would be inserted into the magazine. The poster included a full body digital scan of her body and a collage of images depicting the history of technology, including a timeline all layered using this cutting edge software. Greiman continued to explore typographic meaning and began experimenting with ways to alter the twodimensional space of the page and re-imagined it as a more three-dimensional continuum of time and space. April Greiman is a thinker and an artist, whose transmedia projects, innovative ideas and projects, and hybrid-based approach, have been influential worldwide over the last 30 years. Her explorations of image, word and color as objects in time and space are grounded in her singular fusion of art and technology.
