"Embrace each season of life, for every sunset is a promise of a new dawn, and every ending a seed for a fresh beginning."

As the sun sets on another glorious summer, it is a bittersweet moment when we can finally reflect on sun-soaked days, backyard barbecues, and cherished staycations. While we bid adieu to summer, there is so much joy in embracing the calming pace of autumn—one of my favorite seasons. What could be better than cooling weather, big cozy sweaters, and the comforting aroma of warm drinks?

This issue, we get up close and personal with the Parmar family—Monica, Sunny, Neyha, and Navin. They are the epitome of what makes Calabasas such a warm and welcoming place to live. Passionate about giving back, they embody the very sense of community that we all love about our beautiful city.

As the school bells ring in a new academic year, we have got you covered on everything education-focused. Our backto-school special highlights the most exceptional schools, educational centers, and activities within the Calabasas area. These are the resources that make our community not just a great place to live but also a fantastic place to grow and learn.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the immense effort it takes to bring each issue to life. It's a labor of love, sweat, and yes, sometimes tears—always good ones, I promise! I'm incredibly thankful to work with such a dedicated team. It truly takes a small village to create this magazine, and I couldn't be more grateful to our advertisers and—you, our loyal readers— for supporting us in doing what we love most: celebrating the incredible people who make up our community.

We hope this issue of Calabasas Style Magazine brings you as much joy as it has brought us in creating it. Until next month, wrap yourself in that big sweater, sip your favorite warm drink, and settle into the beauty of autumn in Calabasas.

10TH ANNUAL Calabasas Style

The streets of Calabasas will be paved with red carpets for a very special experience this fall—the 10th Annual Calabasas Film Festival (CFF). Join our fabulous community as many of Calabasas’ most talented residents join forces for this must-attend, five-day, fun-filled event, complete with hand-selected film premieres and lively, catered cocktail hours and afterparties. Created as a nonprofit platform for avid movie-goers, studio executives, and key players in the entertainment industry, CFF celebrates all things film by showcasing a mix of award-winning features, documentaries, and shorts.

Sisters and festival co-directors Kelley and Nicole Fries are dedicated to delivering an unforgettable festival experience by sparking conversations and captivating their guests. They credit their continuous success to their talented staff, volunteers, and board and the incredible support of the passionate residents of their headquarters in Calabasas—“where the heart of film lives.” With so many wildly talented neighbors working in the entertainment industry, the Fries sisters have taken advantage of the opportunity to bring together likeminded individuals and filmgoers within Calabasas and the surrounding areas to connect over mutual passions for film and television.

In the spirit of promoting the arts, supporting filmmakers, and inspiring film lovers, the Calabasas Film Festival traditionally dedicates its last day to honor, educate, and empower the future of the industry—local high school students who have submitted their films for judging by a panel of movie industry personnel. CFF firmly believes in the importance of keeping film alive within the education system by providing future directors, producers, and writers a path to accomplish their dreams and share their stories. With new sponsors and a fresh film lineup, this year is sure to be one for the books. Visit calabasasfilmfestival.com for more information. n

NEUROMODULATORS

WHAT ARE NEUROMODULATORS?

Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau are FDA-approved neuromodulators which temporarily remove wrinkles from the face and neck. The most common areas for treatment include the forehead, glabella aka frown lines, crow’s feet, areas around the mouth, chin, and neck.

Botox can prevent lines from getting etched into the skin. By relaxing facial muscles, it prevents new lines from forming and diminishes any existing lines. That’s why it’s common to start doing preventative Botox in your 20s and 30s.

“I started noticing my eleven lines by the time I was 25.I tried baby Botox, and I couldn’t be happier with my results.”

Fill in fine lines and wrinkles and replenish lost volume of the under eyes, cheeks, or lips.

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Unlike Botox, which relaxes the muscles responsible for forming wrinkles, dermal fillers are injectable gels that diminish the appearance of wrinkles and folds on the face.

Dermal fillers are used to restore volume to areas where bone, fat, and muscle are diminished. Some common areas we treat using filler include the cheeks, under eyes, brows, temples, nasolabial folds, lips, chin, jawline, and hands.

Common fillers used to achieve these results are Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse. Our providers will discuss which option is best for you.

The Family Parmar

Giving back to the community

Monica Parmar and her husband, Sunny, were drawn to the allure of Southern California's beauty and wanted to provide their children, Neyha and Navin, with an exceptional upbringing. With its small-town charm and topnotch school district, Calabasas emerged as their clear choice. A dozen years ago, they uprooted from Miami, Florida, and settled into the Oaks of Calabasas, embarking on their West Coast aspirations.

Both Sunny and Monica experienced the benefits of excellent public education in Canada. Monica's upbringing unfolded in a small town on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where her father served as a public-school educator and a respected figure in the community. Their own children were born in Toronto, Ontario, where Sunny spent his formative years after relocating from the United Kingdom. Following a period in Miami, Sunny and Monica eventually discovered their forever home in Calabasas.

The Parmar’s adore Calabasas and its strong sense of community. “We are fortunate to have lived in this wonderful neighborhood for over a decade, surrounded by the exquisite Santa Monica Mountains and convenient amenities,” says Sunny. “The Oaks of Calabasas community gym is truly my sanctuary. It’s a place for me to tune out and breathe.” Sunny and Monica spend time playing tennis with Neyha and basketball with Navin or walking their furry family members, a 7-year-old Siberian husky named Java and adorable 6-month-old Yorkshire terrier, Cafecito. The family also enjoys dining at Crossroads, Pedalers Fork, and King’s Fish House and sipping their favorite coffee at Cafecito Cafe. The kids frequent the Barnes and Nobles bookstore and Regency movie theater, followed by Jeni’s for ice cream. Sunny and Monica also enjoy listening to cover bands at the Sagebrush Cantina and spending a night in beautiful old town Calabasas with friends.

Calabasas style 49

They are also very career minded. Sunny works as Global CFO for Regent LP, a private equity firm in Beverly Hills. After focusing on investment banking in Canada, he decided to delve into the private equity world and never looked back. He now helps transform businesses through operational improvements and strategic deployment of resources. The company’s diverse global portfolio spans technology, media, consumer products, retail, and industrial sectors. Retail companies such as Club Monaco, Drybar, Sassoon, Intermix, Alkagen, Diamondback, and Alta Cycling Group are just a few acquisitions on Sunny’s roster.

Monica’s background in the pharmaceutical industry includes work in Canada in compounding, retail pharmacy, and research and development. After moving to the United States, she decided to stay home to raise their children and become more active in the community. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of watching my kids grow up and being present in their daily lives,” she explains. “Some of my most cherished memories are daily school drop-off conversations, class projects, sports team travel days, and quick bites before tournaments. The days are long, but the years go by so fast. I’m so glad I could share such a huge part of their school years.”

Monica’s passion for science inspired her to empower other young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math through the “Girls in STEM” project. She also worked with the American Heart Association and its “Go Red for Women” campaign, raising awareness of cardiovascular disease, the number-one killer of women. “This cause is truly personal for our family,” says Monica. “Plus, I’ve made so many wonderful relationships with physicians,

philanthropists, and fundraisers through this amazing nonprofit. It was truly a full-circle moment of giving back while getting so much in return.”

The whole family enjoys paying it forward. Neyha graduated from Calabasas High School last year as a valedictorian, with numerous accolades for her academic success and community service work. She completed the AP Capstone™ diploma program, which helps develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. She also received the California Scholarship Federation Gold Medal for outstanding students. Growing up in Calabasas, Neyha has been active in the community. She’s been an avid tennis player since the age of 5, competing in many local tournaments and eventually joining the Calabasas High School tennis team. She also served as a Peer Support Executive Member, advocating for student mental wellness on campus, and a tutor for the National English Honors Society. Some of Neyha’s fondest memories are the five years she shared with her mom being members of the National Charity League of the San Fernando Valley, working with amazing local philanthropies and new friends. A member of the Calabasas Coyote Girl’s tennis team, Neyha also competed with the Calabasas Swim and Tennis Center for years. Upon graduation, she received a scholarship to attend the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle in their honors program, where she currently majors in neuroscience, and she plans to attend medical school. Neyha also is continuing her philanthropic work, joining the University District Street Medicine program that helps the homeless get much needed medical attention.

Navin also hopes to make a difference in many lives within the field of medicine. Currently a senior at Calabasas High School, he looks forward to majoring in engineering. He recently completed his AP Capstone diploma, and his paper on the significance of AI (artificial intelligence) in healthcare will soon be published. Navin also coaches basketball, tutors young students, and works with the Calabasas Mayor’s Youth Council, where he leads their environmental subcommittee and participates in community leadership.

Navin’s passion for the environment began at a very young age, when he was a “green hero” on Bay Laurel Elementary’s student green team. He recently helped organize the city’s Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations, spoke about water conservation practices with the Las Virgenes Municipal Water

District (LVMWD), and advocated for more sustainable businesses in Calabasas. His goal is to start a community gardening project to improve food insecurity issues at nearby shelters. Navin also believes that the Calabasas Commons sits at the heart of our community and has worked with the Caruso Management team to support additional improvements there. Impressed by their sustainable practices, he advocated for La La Land Kind Café to open.

Navin and his dad also share a lifelong passion for basketball. Sunny played in high school and college and volunteered as a coach with the Calabasas Recreation League. Both Sunny and Navin were involved with the league for eleven seasons. Navin currently plays for SoCal United and the Calabasas High School varsity team. Sunny also volunteers at many charitable basketball programs in inner-city L.A. as well as a nonprofit that teaches young people about the importance of financial independence.

Since the day the Parmars registered their children at Las Virgenes schools, Monica has been volunteering at every level—from room parenting, fundraising, and event planning to sitting on parent-faculty clubs (PFCs) and site councils that develop, review, and evaluate school improvement programs and budgets. She’s also served as a board member for nearly a decade and as vice president over the last three years for THE Foundation, a nonprofit parentvolunteer organization that works with the LVUSD and individual school PFCs to ensure that every child in the district receives the best education possible. “One of my favorite yearly fundraising events is The EVENT for LVUSD each June,” says Monica. “Through my years of volunteer work, I’m extremely fortunate to have formed wonderful relationships with local businesses and vendors while bring the community together to raise funding for such district-wide initiatives as class-size reduction and supporting much-needed counselors at every school. I am blessed to interface with so many amazing parents who work tirelessly to improve each child’s educational experience.” Monica’s work expanded from LVUSD to the City of Calabasas almost a decade ago. She is currently a commissioner for the city and has always advocated for the environment, small businesses, schools, and initiatives that local families care about.

The Parmars love Calabasas and look forward to continuing to support the area’s wonderful schools, small businesses, and amazing community programs for many years to come. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this compassionate, altruistic family. n

COMING TOGETHER: Two Local Synagogues Merge

After months of thoughtful collaboration, Temple Aliyah and Shomrei Torah Synagogue, two prominent Jewish synagogues in the West San Fernando Valley, recently announced their merger, forming a new concept in Jewish communal participation that builds upon the traditional model of synagogue life. Under the new name, “Hamakom,” a Hebrew word that literally translates to “the place,” the best of both places of worship will create a welcoming and inclusive environment, embracing everyone interested in Jewish life, culture, and Torah. Both Rabbi Steward Vogel (formerly of Temple Aliyah) and Rabbi Richard Camras (formerly of Shomrei Torah Synagogue) will jointly serve as spiritual leaders.

The leaders and their communities determined that in order to successfully address the nationwide decline in participation at places of worship exacerbated by the pandemic, operating at an economy of scale and pooling resources was the best way to meet the needs of the changing Jewish landscape. Hamakom

is committed to creating a new model that speaks to the next generation in search of a Jewish life.

With the hub of Hamakom situated on Valley Circle Boulevard, activities, programs, and services will be located throughout the community and online in order to reach and engage more people, fostering connections on a deeper and more meaningful level. Hamakom will continue to offer a wide range of religious services, including Shabbat and holiday observances; life cycle ceremonies, including B’nei Mitzvah; and educational programs for all ages, such as ECE Nursery School, religious school, and lifelong learning opportunities for adults.

By partnering with local organizations and initiating outreach programs, Hamakom seeks to be a leader in social justice and community engagement, making a positive impact in the community and beyond by embodying the values of tikkun olam (repairing the world). CALVARY WESTLAKE CAR SHOW 1ST ANNUAL EVENT ROLLS IN

Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village hosted its inaugural car show on June 17, which was nothing short of a rousing success. With the assistance of approximately 85 church member volunteers, such as Mary Roberts and John Biggs, over 300 vehicles owned by local automotive enthusiasts motored into Calvary’s large parking area. One factor that separates the traditional Cars & Coffee from a car show is an award presentation that honors owners of the finest cars on display. Show trophies were handed out by Dick Thompson, seasoned adults ministry pastor, for a variety of award categories. But the event was not all about cars shining—the guests that arrived, adults and children—were all smiling as it was an enjoyable morning for attendees. Mark your calendars for June 15, 2024, as the second-annual event is already being planned. For more information, visit calvarywestlake.org/carshow.

New Acclaimed Japanese Ramen Restaurant Opens in Topanga in October

Since arriving in the United States and opening his first JINYA Ramen Bar in the Los Angeles area in 2010, CEO and Founder Tomo Takahashi has been spreading the brand’s real ramen culture across the country to great effect. Now, the acclaimed Japanese restaurant is getting back to its roots this fall with a new corporately owned flagship location and training facility opening in Topanga on October 1.

Located in the Westfield Topanga Shopping Center, JINYA’s new restaurant marks its eighth in California as the brand inches closer to its 60th system-wide location, truly showcasing itself as the fastest-growing ramen concept in the country.

“I always had big dreams for JINYA when we first started, but I’m still so humbled at how quickly the public has embraced us over the years,” says Takahashi. “We’re

66 Calabasas style

so excited for this new restaurant in Topanga, not only because it allows us to share even more of our craft, but also because it will be a new headquarters of sorts for the brand, complete with a state-of-the-art training facility.”

One of the major reasons for JINYA’s rapid growth has been its commitment to using quality ingredients that seamlessly intertwine with authentic Japanese tradition. From a corporate standpoint, the brand also prides itself on being driven by the Japanese concept of Kaizen, or continual improvement, which has allowed for its skyrocketing growth over the past decade.

“I want all guests to experience true Japanese ramen,” Takahashi explains. “Our chefs are very meticulous in their methods of creating countless recipes, which includes developing broth flavors over the course of 20 hours and only using a specific brand of water to create consistency. That attention to detail is something that is ingrained in our culture at JINYA, and guests will see that displayed throughout our menu and restaurant design.”

JINYA invites guests to discover a wide array of authentic toppings, from tender pork chashu to shrimp wonton, and

then to elevate the experience further by pairing it with shared plates or craft beer. JINYA is ramen culture, where the relationship between broth and noodles is serious but delicious business.

HOST A Harvest PARTY

As the crisp autumn air sets in and the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, it's the perfect time to gather friends and family for a harvest party. Originally celebrations of the bountiful yields reaped from the hard work of the year, harvest parties are an opportunity to come together, celebrate the autumn spirit, and create lasting memories. Whether you're a seasoned host or planning your first gathering, these ideas will ensure your harvest party is a resounding success.

Set a Festive Scene

Embrace the season by adorning your space with hay bales, cornstalks, pumpkins, gourds, and colorful leaves. Autumnal colors—such as deep oranges, yellows, and browns—are ideal for décor and table settings. Create a playlist featuring folk, bluegrass, and acoustic tunes that evoke a cozy ambiance.

Serve a Farm-to-Table Feast

Emphasize the connection to the fall harvest by creating a menu made of seasonal produce. Incorporate apples, pears, squash, and root vegetables into recipes like hearty soup, roasted meat, and delectable pie. Apple cider, spiced mulled wine, and pumpkin-flavored drinks add a cozy touch.

Encourage Costumes

In the spirit of Halloween, celebrate in style by asking guests to dress up. Have families choose a theme and dress each member accordingly. Plan costume competitions with special gift-basket prizes for a variety of categories, including most original, funniest, and best DIY.

Crafty Fall Fun

A pumpkin-carving station allows guests to let their creativity shine. Provide carving tools, stencils, and paints for an all-ages activity. A build-your-own caramel apple bar, make-your-own trail mix station, or even a pie-decorating corner double as lively entertainment and tasty snacks.

Sun-Kissed Solutions

Helpful tips to keep your summer glow

Though we’ve bid farewell to summer, there's no need to kiss your golden skin goodbye. At-home tanning products offer the perfect solution to avoiding the risks associated with UV exposure while still maintaining a sun-kissed glow. With a few simple practices, you can achieve the perfect tan well into the autumn months and beyond.

Exfoliate : As weather turns colder, skin becomes drier, so regular exfoliation is crucial for maintaining an even tan. Twentyfour hours before applying any tan-enhancing products, prime skin with a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells that can make your tan appear patchy and uneven. Pay particular attention to ankles, knees, and elbows.

Hydrate: One of the most overlooked aspects of self-tanning is hydrated skin. Self-tanning products can cling to very dry areas. Plus, properly moisturized skin retains its color better. Use a high-quality moisturizer daily to keep your skin hydrated and supple.

Stay consistent: To keep your off-season tan looking natural, take a gradual approach when applying self-tanning lotions. Consistent daily applications create a more subtle look. It’s also key to follow a skincare routine using a mild, hydrating cleanser to preserve your skin’s moisture barrier. Be sure to pat your skin dry gently after showering, as excessive rubbing can lead to blotchy tans.

Choose the right products: To extend the life of your tan, use products specifically designed to achieve your desired goal. There are a variety of products to choose from, including tinted moisturizers that subtly deepen your tan; self-tanning mousse to create a darker, instant glow; and serums that help maintain your ideal radiance.

Maintain a healthy diet: Believe it or not, your diet can influence your tan. Foods rich in carotenoids, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach, can contribute to the enhancement of your skin color—so you can preserve a healthy tan and body simultaneously. n

Lip Balm?

Secrets to protecting your pout

Now that cooler weather is upon us, there is no better time to start swiping on a hydrating lip balm to protect and nourish your precious pout. With so many options claiming to do the same thing, it can be tough to narrow down the perfect product, which is why we recommend starting with the ingredient list.

First and foremost, it's important to look for natural ingredients that are gentle and nourishing for your lips, like beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil. Shea butter is a favorite emollient among dermatologists for its multi-tasking capability of drawing moisture into the skin while also sealing it in. Plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties which provide nice relief when dealing with painful, chapped lips. Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant that can help prevent and delay cell damage while fending off free radicals. It is extremely moisturizing, soothing dryness and irritation.

It’s also worth noting that a small amount of the product you use on your lips is often ingested. Toxic chemicals, parabens, phthalates, and artificial flavors and colors have been linked to health concerns such as endocrine disruption and reproductive and developmental problems.

Many people prefer to avoid lip balms that contain artificial fragrances, sulfates, and petroleum-based ingredients that can potentially cause irritation or allergic reactions. Flavoring, like cinnamon, citrus, mint, and peppermint, while temptingly sweet, can be especially irritating.

Menthol, camphor, phenol, or any sort of alcohol-based ingredient may provide an immediate cooling sensation but may also irritate the skin. In some cases, these ingredients can even remove the outer layers of skin, leaving your lips unprotected and susceptible to environmental hazards.

Like the rest of your skin, your lips also need sun protection, so it’s best to use a lip balm with sunscreen to prevent sun damage if you’re heading outside. Dermatologists typically recommend an SPF of 15 or higher. Opt for safer ingredients, like zinc oxide or titanium oxide, to help block the UV rays.

With your perfect balm in hand, you’ll be set to protect that pout for whatever the fall brings, whether it be a stroll on the beach or a hike through the canyon or dining on the patio for your favorite brunch...perhaps even turning that pout into a smile. n

Ruth Swissa, C.M.M., is a certified medical micropigmentation specialist and skin care expert whose family has been in the aesthetics field for three generations. Ruth is certified by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) and is known nationally for her outstanding work in the discipline of medical micropigmentation for her natural looking techniques. This treatment is often characterized as the culmination of breast cancer recovery, restoring femininity and familiarity to the body and psyche of a survivor.

of areola restoration. Unlike the invasive surgical procedure, areola pigmentation is virtually painfree and yields beautiful and natural results. An areola tattoo can visually improve the size, shape, and color of the nipple. The areola pigmentation technique layers flesh-colored pigments to simulate the appearance of a nipple. The three-dimensional areola tattoo is another technique Swissa specializes in which uses advanced shading techniques and shadowing to create a hyper-realistic areola complex.

Ruth Swissa is distinguished as one of the best 3D areola tattoo artists in the world and is acclaimed for her uncanny ability to create renderings that resemble the patient’s original nipple. The re-application of an areola truly marks the final, triumphant step in the journey of a breast-cancer survivor, instilling a renewed sense of self by way of restoration and helping her reclaim her womanhood. n

Crossroads Kitchen, L.A.’s beloved plant-based fine-dining eatery, delighted local guests and business owners with a four-course dining experience on Monday, July 31, in the private dining room that features switch glass for complete privacy and stunning chandeliers and comfortably seats up to 20 people. To start, guests were served a tantalizing first course of watermelon salad and stuffed zucchini blossoms with almond ricotta cheese and marinara sauce. The second course consisted of kale Caeser salads and wood-fired Truffle Bianca Pizzas served family style. Three delectable dishes rounded out the main course: Fork and Knife Baba Ganoush, grilled zucchini with salsa verde, and Campanelle Bolognese with Impossible meat. In May of 2022, Crossroads’ second location in Las Vegas opened its doors shortly before the opening of the Calabasas location in October 2022. “Crossroads is not what people picture when they think of a vegan restaurant,” says Chef Tal. “Our patrons love the fact that we offer an upscale dining experience where vegans, meat eaters, and flexitarians can enjoy our creative plantbased takes on an array of Mediterranean-inspired dishes.”

With upscale décor and lighting, Crossroads Kitchen is the first plant-based restaurant in Calabasas to have a full bar with an inspired cocktail program. There are no obvious vegan cues, and most guests don't even make the connection that the menu is plant-based. Instead, patrons just know that the restaurant is comfortable and the food is satisfying and delicious. Tal explains that “Crossroads is defined not by what's missing, but by what it is—an intersection where vegans, flexitarians, omnivores, and meat eaters can cross paths to share a delicious meal and a good time. We believe great food should be enjoyed by everyone!”

Corporate Executive Chef Paul Zlatos, a graduate of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, prepared the menu for the guests of Calabasas Style Magazine’s intimate dining experience. He was on hand to welcome attendees and shared insight on Crossroads’ seasonally rotating menu that sources ingredients at their peak and signature dishes that remain staples on the menu year-round.

7TH ANNIVERSARY

The Calabasas Senior Center celebrated its seventh anniversary on June 22. The event marked seven successful years since the facility opened in June 2016. Seniors and city officials celebrated the anniversary by visiting and catching up with friends, enjoying refreshments and entertainment, and touring the facility to meet instructors and receive information on membership, programs, activities, clubs, and excursions. The facility offers classes, lectures, clubs, entertainment, excursions, and social gatherings to people 50+ in the greater Calabasas community. Refreshments were served and the rock band On Tap performed great hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Supervisor Kimberly Post said, “When you walk into the building, you’ll notice that we’re not your grandmother’s senior center. There’s a vibe of active, vibrant men and women, fifty years and better, enjoying classes like tai chi, yoga, and watercolor and oil painting and playing bridge, canasta, or Mah Jongg. Some Like It HOT

Style Trends

As the warmth of summer gradually fades and the anticipation of crisp fall days and the cold embrace of winter set in, there’s no better time to consider a transformative upgrade for one of the most iconic elements of your home—the fireplace. With its inherent charm, your fireplace not only provides physical warmth but also serves as the metaphorical heart of your home and can anchor and elevate your living space. Whether you’re yearning for a cozy evening in, a romantic ambiance, or a focal point that captivates your guests, a newly designed fireplace can do the trick.

The process of enhancing your fireplace experience begins with a visit to the stone yard, where the possibilities are as endless as the stones themselves. The act of hand-selecting materials adds a personal touch and a sense of connection to your home. Consider embracing contrast by blending a black hearth with a unique and exotic stone. This fusion of the traditional and the extraordinary creates visual intrigue that draws attention even when the fireplace isn’t lit. Each stone has a story etched in its grains, a history that complements your living space. The asymmetrical veining and touch of rust in the marble I chose for my fireplace was the inspiration for the color palette in my living room.

While materials lay the foundation for your upgraded fireplace, it’s the finer details that truly infuse character and sophistication. Dramatic edge detail and precise right angles bring an architectural dimension that turns heads. The interplay of light and shadow against these textured surfaces adds an element of drama and inspires conversation. Every line and contour contribute to the aesthetic, making your fireplace more than just a source of warmth—it becomes a focal point as well.

An important thing to consider is the scale and height. Much like furniture, these dimensions are crucial for the balance of the room. A larger fireplace exudes grandeur and invites larger gatherings, perfect for those upcoming winter parties. On the other hand, a more intimate scale provides a cozier setting, ideal for a quiet night alone or an intimate conversation. Height, too, plays a crucial role. A soaring fireplace exudes a sense of majesty, while a lower profile fosters an approachable ambiance.

One of the most exciting aspects of upgrading your fireplace is the limitless customizability it offers. Fireplaces are, at their core, blank canvases just waiting for your creative stroke. Each element—from the mantel to the surround, from the hearth to the façade—can be tailored to reflect your personal taste and style. This bespoke approach ensures that your fireplace not only fits seamlessly within your existing decor but also becomes a centerpiece that resonates with your unique personality. Whether your aesthetic leans towards the classical, the contemporary, or a fusion of both, your upgraded fireplace becomes a statement of artistic self-expression.

As the seasons transition, so too do your needs and desires. A fireplace that was once merely a functional necessity evolves into a design element that shapes the ambiance and character of your home. Including it in the design and space planning, it draws loved ones together and provides a tranquil ambiance during cold nights. With its ability to transform and adapt, a well-crafted fireplace is an excellent example of good design.

The fireplace, with its timeless charm and potential to transform, presents a unique opportunity for enhancement. From the selection of stone to the architectural finesse of mitering and angles, every detail matters. Scale and height contribute to the mood, and the ability to customize ensures that your fireplace aligns with your vision. So be creative! Let your fireplace be the source of comfort, style, and lasting memories. n

KEEP IT Natural Elevate your décor with wood accents

Decorating with natural wood accents offers a timeless and versatile way to enhance both traditional and contemporary interiors. The intrinsic warmth and organic character of wood effortlessly brings a harmonious balance to any space, regardless of the prevailing design aesthetic. Whether your taste leans towards the cozy, rustic vibes or gravitates towards minimalist, modern lines, natural wood can seamlessly integrate into your décor scheme.

The scale of wooden accents can vary based on your preferences. Small décor items, like wooden trays, picture frames, or bowls, offer a subtle touch, introducing an element of natural warmth without overwhelming the space. These accents act as delightful focal points that catch the eye without demanding full attention. On the other hand, more substantial elements like hardwood floors or wooden wall panels can lay the groundwork for your entire design concept,

serving as a neutral canvas that allows other elements in the room to shine.

The beauty of wood also lies in its ability to offer visual contrast. Mixing polished, smooth surfaces with more rugged, unfinished textures can create a dynamic visual landscape in your interior. The variation in wood tones—from light beech to dark walnut— allows for a rich layering effect, breaking any monotony in a single-tone room and adding a sense of depth and complexity.

In essence, natural wood accents are a versatile and timeless asset in interior design, serving as both a stylistic and functional element. They offer a multitude of options to suit diverse design narratives, making them a wise long-term investment for both aesthetic and practical reasons. Their enduring appeal and adaptability ensure they will remain relevant, even as your aesthetic preferences evolve over time, providing a touch of enduring organic beauty to any space. n

INSPIRING OTHERS TO GIVE BACK

Rob N. Litman, founder and CEO of Vitoli, Inc., is a man of few words, often letting his incredible landscaping, hardscaping, pool and spa, and outdoor kitchen designs speak for themselves. What Rob does believe in is putting his money where his mouth is by supporting several nonprofit organizations in the greater Calabasas area.

After working with other landscaping and design firms for a decade, Rob decided to venture out on his own. He planted Vitoli’s first seeds in Calabasas in 2017 and grew from there. Once his company became an established entity, Rob knew he needed to find ways to give back to the community which had supported him and his team of landscapers, engineers, and contractors. Several years ago, Rob learned about The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools and knew instantly that this organization was one that he wanted to support.

“I know that so many of my clients choose to live in Calabasas and Agoura Hills because of the great schools,” says Rob. “Just like the projects we take on, we know every school needs a strong foundation. That includes great teachers, helpful counselors, and stimulating activities inside and outside of the classroom. I want to support those initiatives to maintain their level of excellence for our schools.”

President of The Foundation for LVUSD, Mark Madnick, shares, “I met Rob when we hired Vitoli to renovate our yard. I was so impressed with the character of Rob and his team. We discussed how important charity is to him, especially supporting children and education. From that point on, Rob and Vitoli have been generous contributors to The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools by taking on sponsorships and making donations to THE Carnival, THE Battle of the Bands, and THE Event. I cannot begin to express how much we value their partnership in supporting public education and making a lasting impact on our students through increased learning opportunities and social and emotional well-being.”

In 2022, Rob became aware of another nonprofit organization in need of both funding and champions: Creative Steps, a program operated by The Aurelia Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that assists teens and young adults with developmental disabilities, including physical, behavioral, and social challenges, in navigating their way in the community. Their mission is to support and nurture a lifestyle of work, play, and social engagement for every client that maximizes the potential for a lifetime of growth, health, happiness, and achievement.

“I learned about Creative Steps and The Aurelia Foundation from CEO and Board Member Bob Charney,” says Rob. “Bob and his wife, Lisa, have a son with autism and epilepsy, and like a lot of teens with these challenges, there aren’t many programs to help these kids once they age out of the system.”

Proud to be associated with Rob and the entire Vitoli team, Bob shares, “Rob Littman has arguably the biggest heart and is an important stakeholder helping Creative Steps fulfill our mission of serving people with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. He takes time to understand our nonprofit’s challenges and opportunities and proactively looks for ways to enrich our program with both financial support and jobs for the people we serve.”

Rob believes that giving back also happens organically. When Vitoli takes on large residential projects, Rob truly takes the time to get to know his customers and what they are dealing with on a personal level. When getting

to know his client Victoria Walker, he learned about the personal struggles affecting her entire family. Victoria’s mother, Gloria Walker, lived her entire life putting others first. In 2012, at the age of 63, Gloria began struggling with health issues. Over the next seven years, as Gloria’s symptoms became worse with repeated falls and multiple fractures attributed to a false diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease, endless doctors told Gloria and Victoria that there was nothing wrong. It wasn’t until Gloria was completely incapacitated that the accurate diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) was determined.

Fortunately, Victoria and her family were introduced to the Lewy Body Dementia Association of America (LBDA), which provided a wealth of kindness, information, resources, education, support groups, and guidance for the family. When Rob Litman became aware that approximately 1.4 million people in the United States are suffering from LBD today, he decided to support the LBDA. “I learned through Victoria that LBD is one of the most widely misdiagnosed conditions and there are no cures,” says Rob. “It has a 100 percent mortality rate. LBD attacks every region of the brain, and it affects the mind and the body, leaving families absolutely torn to pieces. I knew I had to help other families like Victoria’s, and I can do that by donating to the LBDA.”

The slogan at Vitoli is “Think Outside the Box.” Rob and his team believe that should pertain not only to their work, but to the type of charitable contributions they make. “I found that donating can also facilitate the development of connections with locals and other enterprises, which can result in new opportunities and partnerships,” says Rob. He hopes other businesses are inspired to donate and become involved in nonprofit organizations to support their community’s needs. n

9TH ANNUAL WH-WC SUMMERTIME TEA FUNDRAISER

The Woodland Hills Woman’s Club (WHWC) hosted its largest fundraising event of the year on August 5 at St. Bernardine’s Parish Hall in Woodland Hills, welcoming a record-breaking 23 tables and 200 guests. The day included special guests, such as members from other women’s clubs in the area and representatives from the region and state.

All enjoyed live entertainment, a raffle, door prizes, a mimosa bar, vendors, a silent auction, a wine pull, and of course, tea. The tables were beautifully decorated by WHWC members, with this year’s best table awarded to a Franciscan applethemed table decorated by local realtor Cheri Steelman.

A very notable visit came from Fire Station 105, which graciously donated “A Fire Station Experience” for the silent auction that raised over $2000, though WHWC ultimately elected to redirect those funds back to the station. WHWC is a registered 501(c) (3) serving the local community since 1948. For more information, visit woodlandhillswomansclub.org.

Choosing the Best Type of Schooling for Your Child

In the ever-growing world of education, it’s crucial for parents to become knowledgeable about all the options. From public, charter, and private schools to home and online schooling, the choices continue to grow, so learning more about each before deciding on the best course of action is truly beneficial.

Fortunately, Calabasas and the surrounding communities possess a wealth of educational opportunities. If public school doesn’t quite fit the bill, consider charter schools. These operate more autonomously than traditional public schools since they don’t have to follow state-mandated curriculums and rules. They often offer smaller class sizes and better access to technology. In California, charter schools receive state funding and are tuition-free, non-sectarian, and open to all until filled.

Private schools, whether secular or religious, charge tuition. In exchange, they often provide a wider range of educational styles, such as the studentdirected Montessori Method or Waldorf arts-based curriculum.

One of the world’s oldest forms of education, homeschooling, offers the benefit of one-on-one teaching, flexible schedules, and greater control over your child’s education. Plus, in California, the state provides a stipend to parents to help with material costs and more through independent charters. Some say the biggest drawback of homeschooling is the lack of peer-to-peer interaction, but with a little research, you can find play and study groups, park days where homeschoolers meet friends, and other activities.

During the pandemic, nearly all learning was done online. This led to an increase in online education. For kids who possess health issues or simply prefer remote learning, online public and private schools offer a viable alternative. Look for accredited programs with certified teachers as well as low student-to-teacher ratios and high graduation rates.

Whichever type of education you choose, remaining active in your child’s education is truly one of the greatest gifts you can ever give. n

How Kids Benefit From

School Sports

School sports offer a myriad of benefits to young athletes, from stronger bodies to enhanced cognitive abilities and camaraderie. Participating in team sports fosters self-confidence and empathy for others, while building a strong foundation for fitness. These traits go far beyond students’ school years.

Athletic programs also encourage participants to push beyond limitations, teaching children how to set and achieve goals for themselves, as well as the good of the team. Kids who participate in sports are also much more likely to remain active as adults. This helps curb obesity, which has become rampant over the past few decades. Physical activity reduces body fat while strengthening muscle. It also improves overall coordination. Staying active also helps lower stress and anxiety, while increasing problem-solving skills.

Most importantly, sports are just plain fun. They increase serotonin and endorphins, those feel-good hormones that enhance our minds and moods. Just remember not to ever

force kids to participate in sports they don’t enjoy. That simply adds unnecessary stress.

Playing on a team teaches members the importance of practice and persistence in achieving short- and longterm goals. Turning teammates into friends and discovering mentors among both friends and coaches proves invaluable. Becoming part of something bigger than themselves helps teens feel more socially connected, which is an essential component of mental, emotional, and physical health.

Creating relationships with fellow teammates helps students view the world from another perspective, a skill that can be useful throughout their lives. Student athletes develop leadership skills as they mentor younger athletes or advance to higher team ranks, such as captain. Exercise has even been shown to improve academic test scores in English, math, and science. From increased physical fitness and problem-solving skills to reduced pressure and obesity, school sports clearly help kids develop into healthier, more compassionate, wellrounded adults. n

Synergy ACADEMICS

Brings out the best in every student

Synergy Academics in West Hills affords students from kindergarten through college the confidence to accomplish their educational objectives with positive reinforcement and hard work. With over 20 years of experience, founder Jennifer Lopata believes every student is capable of learning with an individualized program.

Synergy Academics recognizes that some students fare better with remote services, whether due to a need for flexibility or to save time or because they prefer to work from home. Synergy offers the option of either services at their state-ofthe-art tutoring center in West Hills or remote tutoring and other services via Zoom or a similar online method. With this flexibility, Synergy is able to address the learning loss that many students experience during the summer, often causing them to fall below grade level.

For the students who gain benefit from individualized assistance to reach and achieve their academic potential, Synergy Academics provides one-on-one subject tutoring in over three dozen subjects for all students grades K-12. Pairing students with compatible tutors who focus on their individual learning styles, Synergy Academics brings out the best in each student.

Additionally, Synergy Academics offers college application services. Independent professional college counselors work with students and their families to navigate the complicated college application process and assist those applying for financial aid. While some colleges have made SAT/ACT test scores optional, many students’ applications will be strengthened with strong test scores. Synergy’s excellent SAT and ACT test prep begins with an assessment test to determine which of the two tests best suits each student. One-on-one test prep with highly trained tutors has proven very effective in improving students’ confidence and ultimately their test scores.

“We set out to develop a unique model for providing tutoring and academic services both in our office and remotely,” explains Lopata. “We know that parents want flexibility to help their students navigate their busy schedules. We provide flexible programs and excellent tutors and college-counseling professionals who are not only highly qualified but also compassionate and encouraging.”

TechBar by Code in Pink a Social Enterprise for Girls’ IT Education

Education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and empower young women to achieve their dreams. That is the mission of Change the Cycle, Inc., a local nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance, mentoring, and skills training to girls in Los Angeles and around the world.

It was founded in 2020 by Amalika Ranasinghe and Chamil Hettiarachchi, Calabasas residents who wanted to make a difference in their community and beyond. Since then, they have helped more than 14 girls pursue their education and career goals.

What is TechBar by Code in Pink?

Code in Pink is an education program that teaches girls technology skills and prepares them for the digital economy. TechBar is a unique social enterprise that offers IT services, such as troubleshooting and fixing and upgrading computers and phones on a mobile unit. Calabasas High School Football Locked and loaded for success

Despite the recent “hurriquake,” the Calabasas High School varsity football team has reunited as summer fades into fall. The team’s student athletes started their training camp on Wednesday, July 26, and played their first game in Santa Monica on Friday, August 18. Last year, the varsity Coyotes had a terrific 8–5 year with a deep playoff run into the semifinals. They dispatched La Habra with a dramatic comeback win and easily defeated Ramona High School before falling by one point to San Jacinto High School in the semifinals. This year, the Coyotes have more than 90 players in the program—their highest total in almost a decade.

The varsity players are loaded and ready for another strong season, led by senior quarterback Alonzo Contreras, who committed to play at San Jose State University next year. Last year, Alonzo threw 35 touchdown

passes and had a completion rate of 61 percent. This year, the offense has dynamic weapons starting with senior Aaron Butler, a Colorado commit who plays as a triple threat: receiver, running back, and defensive cornerback. Aaron averaged 75 yards a game and had 16 touchdowns last season.

Key returning starters on offense include Anthony Simon (OL ’25); Arion Lang (WR ’25); Danye Brown (WR ’25); Julien Marx (WR ’24); and Josh Nazmiyev (RB ’24). Key returning starters on defense include Roberto Paladines (LB ’24); Sam Kijner (LB ’24); Josh Nazmiyev (DB ’24); Danye Brown (DB ’25); Brock Bomberg (DE ’24); and Arion Lang (DB ’25).

TEEING OFF FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER

July 10 was a perfect day for golf at Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo as supporters of The Kevin Cordasco Foundation: Something Yellow hit the course for the annual tournament in honor of the heroes of childhood cancer. Breakfast was served during registration, pizza lunch was available on the course, and a BBQ after-party, complete with live music and silent auction, rounded out the afternoon. The Kevin Cordasco Foundation is committed to raising awareness and much-needed funds to benefit childhood cancer. Inspired by their son Kevin, who battled nearly seven years with neuroblastoma, losing the battle at only 16 years old, their efforts are designed to support the one-in-285 children who will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20. In today’s world, parents worry more than ever about their children’s ability to be successful in social situations. With the addition of video gaming and social media platforms, children do not have the same access to in-person social interactions as they used to. Due to this phenomenon, many children lack the necessary skills to be successful when interacting with their peer groups. Many children also suffer from issues such as social isolation, lack of confidence in their social abilities, and fears of being rejected. Tammy Van Fleet, PhD., BCBA-D, opened the Social Skills Training Academy to offer state-of-the-art social skills groups designed to teach children and young adults the necessary skills to feel confident and knowledgeable in their social world. Her social skills classes are designed to teach age-appropriate social skills in an environment that is fun, interactive, and effective, where children are given the necessary tools to help them feel confident and ready to be a part of a variety of different social situations.

Sibling Rivalry

What a wondrous thing to share your life with a brother or sister. At least in theory. In practice, many parents soon discover their little angels exhibit devilishly competitive behavior toward their siblings. Luckily, when kids keep butting heads over sharing toys or their parents’ time, there are solutions.

First, it’s best to communicate thoughtfully so your kids can mirror your actions. Next, you can set up consequences for bad behavior, whether it's towards you or each other. Once kids are old enough, teach them how to negotiate with their siblings and express their feelings without screaming. It’s like couples therapy, and you’re the wise counselor.

Competition between siblings is generally the underlying cause of the bad behavior. This rivalry, if not managed

early and often, may continue through adulthood. Avoid comparing your children. Show them how to work together on problems and chores. When your kids fight, try not to blame one of them but recognize how both contributed to the conflict. Better yet, give them tools, such as how to compromise, to help them handle arguments on their own. Sometimes it may be necessary to send kids to their respective corners to cool off. However, make sure to discuss their feelings later to avoid similar quarrels.

It helps to speak to each child about any troubles he or she is experiencing with siblings. Taking time to understand grievances goes a long way to bolster self-esteem, making kids less likely to act out in the future. Create positive family experiences by sharing fun activities from board games and hiking to dining out and travel. Finally, remind your kids how they’ll hopefully still be part of each other’s lives long after all the toys have been put away and these day-to-day arguments end. n

Growing brains are very hungry organs. In fact, they are the first of the body’s organs to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. So, certain brainboosting foods may help enhance your child’s overall cognitive development. Go the extra mile to ensure your child excels in school this year by taking a close look at his or her diet. Growing bodies need many types of nutrients, so you may want to consider incorporating these superfoods during the school year and beyond.

Salmon

Fatty fish like salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for brain health and development. Instead of tuna sandwiches, make salmon salad for lunch with canned salmon and nonfat plain yogurt on whole-grain bread (another brain-boosting food).

Brain-Boosting Foods for Kids

Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein and contain nutrients like choline, which helps in memory development. Two whole eggs a day provide the choline that children ages 8 and younger require. Try breakfast for dinner one night a week.

Berries

Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and blackberries are packed with antioxidants, including vitamin C, that protect the brain from oxidative stress and improve memory. Add berries to cereal or enjoy a mound of berries and whipped cream for a light dessert.

Almond butter

Almonds and almond butter are rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamin E, which protects nerve membranes, plus thiamin to help the brain and nervous system use glucose for energy.

Colorful veggies

Leafy greens, tomatoes, sweet potatoes— vegetables with rich, deep color—are the best sources of antioxidants to keep brain cells strong and healthy. If you have a picky eater, disguise finely chopped or blended veggies into sauces or soups.

Lean beef

Nearly one in 10 American children ages 3 and younger has an iron deficiency, which can contribute to learning difficulties. Lean beef provides an excellent source of zinc and iron. Black bean burgers are a great iron-containing beef alternative.

Of course, staying hydrated is also crucial for optimal brain function, so always ensure that your child drinks enough water throughout the day. n

Calabasas Pediatrics Tips for School Success

Health and school success should be at the top of every parent’s mind. Lifestyle choices, including nutrition and sleep, play a major role in school performance. To ensure your kids are on track for a healthy, happy, and successful school year, we’d like to share our best back-to-school tips with you.

Seven Ss for School Success

1. SLEEP

During the summer, kids stay up later—whether running around the neighborhood or playing video games—and it’s now time to start moving that bedtime up by 15 minutes every few days until you reach an appropriate school-night bedtime. Kids need at least 10 hours of sleep—teens too! Three days before school starts, set an alarm, wake your kids up lovingly, and practice your morning routine. With a few days of practice, the first morning of school should run smoothly.

2 SCREENS

Summertime often means more screen time. Sit down as a family now and discuss school-day media use and screentime rules. That may mean a limit of one to two hours per night (official American Academy of Pediatrics maximum recommendation) or no screens at all on school nights. Make sure you have screen-free zones in your home, such as the kitchen table and the beds. Set an electronic curfew, meaning that an hour before bedtime all screens get turned off and charged out of the bedroom so as not to interfere with sleep.

3. SUGAR AND SNACKS

When school is out, kids often eat more “fun” foods, but on school days, healthy, protein-rich meals are critically important to help kids concentrate and stay energized longer. Try to decrease or eliminate sugar in the morning and feed your kids a healthy, protein-rich breakfast to start the day off right. Good options are eggs, dairy products, nut butters, and whole-grain bread. Pack healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle with plain water for the school day.

4. SHOTS

Every child needs to be up to date on vaccines; it’s a California state law. Touch base with your pediatrician and get

your child checked out from head to toe, brain and mental health included. Your kids can’t learn if they aren’t healthy, focused, and mentally prepared.

5. SUPPLIES

Be sure to pick a backpack with padded straps that isn’t going to be too heavy (not more than a ¼ of your child’s body weight). Some students prefer rolling backpacks. Just keep in mind that these can be difficult to fit in lockers and carry upstairs.

6. STUDY SPACE

Your kids need a clean, quiet, and organized space to do their homework and study. Whether it’s a bedroom desk or the kitchen table, keeping it clutter-free and without distractions will help your kids stay focused and engaged in their work.

7. STRESS

Beginning the school year can be a stressful time for everyone. Talk to your kids about any concerns they may have and discuss the school-day routine. Re-introduce them to old friends and encourage them to make new friends too. A few days before school starts, go to the school and get a “lay of the land” so that your children feel more comfortable on the first day.

If your family needs help with any of these tips or health or wellness issues, let us know. At Calabasas Pediatrics Wellness Center, we specialize in helping all kids and teens be healthy, well-adjusted, and successful students.

Lessons From Research: How Parents Can Help Prevent Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious psychological disorders with dangerous medical consequences. Typically, the whole family suffers when their loved one struggles with an eating disorder. Fortunately, there are some lessons from research that parents can utilize to support a healthy relationship with food and help prevent eating disorders:

1. Have regular family meals. Studies show that having frequent family dinners decreases the risk of eating disorders as well as the risk of adolescent substance use, violence, depression, suicide, and school problems.

2. Discourage/disallow dieting. Restrictive dieting is one of the strongest predictors of an eating disorder. Not only does restrictive dieting lower your metabolism and necessitate further food restriction to achieve weight loss, but the deprivation mentality can potentially trigger binge eating. “Yo–yo” dieting has been linked to serious health problems such as coronary artery disease.

3. Model behavior that you want your child to adopt. Teens who perceive that parents “never diet” are much less likely to engage in unhealthy weight control measures than teens who perceive that their parents “diet a lot.”

4. Poke holes in media messages to allow your child to recognize diet culture and the impossible standards displayed

in the media. Discuss advertising “tricks” like Photoshop and social media algorithms.

5. Prepare pre-teens for adolescent transitions. During early adolescence, we can expect a weight gain of about 10 pounds per year, and in girls, body fat typically goes from 16 to 27 percent. Often pre-teens will get extra adiposity around their middle before they start their growth spurt. This is all normal. Because teasing and critical commentary have a well-established impact on body image and disordered eating, you can teach responses to teasing about normal pubertal development.

6. Seek help early if you see warning signs. Go to a trusted health care professional if you see worrisome signs such as frequent meal skipping, weight loss, disappearance of food, or vomiting after meals. Research tells us that early intervention predicts greater recovery success. n

WEST HILLS HOSPITAL FIRST IN U.S. TO USE MOTION PRESERVATION DEVICE

West Hills Hospital recently became the first hospital in the country to use TOPS™, an innovative solution recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration after extensive clinical trials that demonstrated the system’s safety and effectiveness in alleviating back pain and improving physical function. It is the latest motion preservation spinal device to treat spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. The groundbreaking procedure was performed by Jared Ament, MD, a renowned board-certified fellowshiptrained neurosurgeon at West Hills Hospital. The first-of-its-kind operation marked a significant milestone in the treatment of complex spine disorders, providing a beacon of hope to millions of patients suffering from debilitating leg and back pain. As the only technology of its kind designed to preserve mobility post decompression, the device offers a revolutionary alternative to the 350,000 patients annually who traditionally undergo lumbar spinal fusion. My Chiropracter Prepared Me for Rosh Hashana

Every other year in the days surrounding the High Holy Days, I find myself running to my chiropractor, Joel Silbar, so that he can adjust me, bringing some solace to my sore back. Sometimes, when I have ignored until too late the damage I have been doing to my body and soul, this man of gifted hands will meet me backstage at the Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks just before Congregation Or Ami’s High Holy Day services. There, he lays me out on the floor, and in an act reminiscent of the spiritual teshuva (repentance/return) Jews are instructed to engage in, he turns me from the pain piercing my pre-prayerful preparations back on a path of wholeness and healing.

After each emergency adjustment, I arise again feeling fine. Each time he leaves me with a hug and a smile and a suggestion that, in addition to attending to my sermons, I might also spend time attending to the stresses that build up in my body. Each time I leave him with a hug and a promise—too quickly forgotten or ignored—that I will do the core work necessary to combat the crick that confounds my preferred pre-service calm.

This year, as Rosh Hashana (September 15–17) and Yom Kippur (September 24–25) approach, I have committed to finally listening to my chiropractor’s advice. This year, I am spending as much time focused on my body’s core work as I put into the spiritual core-work I do for myself.

144 Calabasas style

Just as I have long encouraged others to prepare well ahead for the spiritual journey that comes with the Jewish High Holy Days, I am trying to practice what I preach.

I have been taking online courses with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality (jewishspirituality.org) to develop on my spiritual core, creating and strengthening new pathways for my whole person. I am rededicating to my morning rituals, a spiritual practice to return me to soulfulness. I am up early for meditation using the Calm app (calm.com) to practice breathing through the vicissitudes of life.

Then, while listening to Spotify playlists of Modeh Ani (prayer of thanks), I do my gratitude work by writing down three things from the previous 24 hours which I am thankful for and why I am thankful. These remind me in the midst of life’s pressures that I am surrounded by a bounty of blessings.

Imagining my chiropractor’s smile cheering me on, I dedicate time to core strengthening exercises to prepare my weary body to carry me through. Often I am listening to podcasts from The Happiness Lab (drlauriesantos. com/happiness-lab-podcast) or On the Other Hand: Ten Minutes of Torah (reformjudaism.org/podcasts/otherhand-ten-minutes-torah).

Finally, onto exercise—swimming or treadmill time—to integrate all this mind, heart, and body work.

It takes time to take care of ourselves. Each of us deserves the attention of heart-mind-body work as most of us are plagued with too much stress, anxiety, and other real-world pressures. During the upcoming Yamim Noraim (the Days of Awe), we will be asked if we are on the path of promise or if we have pursued less positive pathways leading in directions not good for our soulcenter. Often we stress about carrying the burden of the past and the worry about the future. Might we do the wholeness work now to focus on returning our present to promise and inner peace? Such focus will refill our depleted stores and strengthen our weakened cores.

As for me, my core work is already showing signs of success. I’m breathing better. I’m more focused. I have more stamina. My soul seems more satisfied.

On Rosh Hashana, we will sound the shofar, a ram’s horn that calls us to commit to internal transformation. Its piercing sounds send us on a journey back to our authentic selves.

the bimah (stage) at the Thousand Oaks Bank of America Performing Arts Center, we hope to bring together the right combination of moving music (traditional and contemporary); spoken word (ancient prayers and modern poetry); guided meditation; and authentic God talk to touch people’s minds, hearts, and souls. We will weave together core messages and spiritual core work to guide the gathered to let go of the constant pain or ongoing pressures that stress our minds and souls. We will help each other return to authenticity.

Jewish tradition and time-tested experience teach that these messages move deeper inside when we each are already prepared. Will you be ready to hear the shofar’s call?

Begin your core work today. Strengthen your physical core even as you deepen your spiritual core. That way, neither you nor I will find ourselves strewn out on a backstage floor somewhere seeking a last-minute adjustment. Rather, we will be reaching out and reaching up with a freedom of movement that comes from ongoing mind-body-soul core work.

Wishing all those who observe a spiritually fulfilling, intellectually engaging, musically uplifting High Holy Days. And may we all be blessed. n

Rabbi Paul Kipnes —author, innovator, and a spiritual leader of Congregation Or Ami—leads the High Holy Days at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks. You can also stream online at no cost at oramiLIVE.com. Information at orami.org/hhd.

According to American Heart Association statistics, roughly 350,000 adults experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually, with 70 percent occurring in a private home. Misunderstandings about CPR can prevent people from acting, so here are some tips to keep you confident and ready.

Get trained: Take a CPR course from a certified provider. This will teach you the proper techniques and procedures for performing CPR effectively. While you don’t have to hold a certification to perform CPR, you should strongly consider taking a CPR course to be prepared—especially if you have children. Instructor-led courses are available locally and video courses are available online.

Know the signs of cardiac arrest: Learn to recognize the signs of cardiac arrest, such as sudden loss of consciousness, no pulse, and no breathing. Research has shown that each minute CPR is delayed the odds of survival decrease by about 10 percent, so acting quickly is critical.

Save a Life With CPR

Call 911: In any emergency situation, it is important to call for professional medical help immediately. If possible, have a second bystander make the call. The 911 operators can help guide you through CPR.

Perform chest compressions: If someone is in cardiac arrest, start by performing chest compressions. Place the heel of your hand on the center of the person's chest, between the nipples. Interlock your fingers and position your shoulders directly above your hands. Push hard and fast, aiming for a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute. (You can use the rhythm of the BeeGee’s “Stayin’ Alive” or have someone Google “metronome” and enter “110.”) Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

Use rescue breaths: Hands-only CPR can be effective for the first few minutes after cardiac arrest in adults and teens. However, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation—two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions—is important for infants and children and if someone's heart stopped because of choking or drowning. Tilt the person's head back slightly, pinch their nose shut, and give two rescue breaths. Each breath should last about one second and make the chest rise visibly.

Continue CPR until help arrives: Keep performing chest compressions and rescue breaths in a cycle until professional help arrives or the person shows signs of life. n

Should I get the new RSV vaccine?

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) has been around since 1956, and yes, we finally have a vaccine for it. RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. It is most common in children, and reinfection remains common throughout life. Reinfection in adulthood often produces only mild to moderate symptoms that are indistinguishable from the common cold or a sinus infection. RSV, however, can cause more serious illness in infants, older adults, and patients with compromised immune systems. RSV is usually spread through direct contact with the virus, such as when droplets from another person’s cough or sneeze contact your eyes, nose, or mouth. It can also be spread when you touch a surface that has the virus on it, like a doorknob, and then touch your face before washing your hands.

Symptoms of RSV infection may include runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever, or wheezing. Most people recover in a week or two. More serious symptoms include shortness of breath and decreased oxygen levels. RSV can lead to further complications resulting in hospitalization and even death.

The CDC recommends adults 60 years and older may receive a single dose of RSV vaccine—based on discussions between the patient and health care provider. The RSV vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines. Side effects of the vaccine include pain, redness, and swelling where the shot is given, fatigue, fever, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle or joint pain.

Your decision to get the vaccine should be based on your personal circumstances and discussion with a health care provider.

Southern California Sinus Institute

Climate change has brought about a variety of issues—such as more rain, longer pollen seasons, and increased dust and mold—which all increase pollen-related allergies. Thankfully, renowned sinus expert Dr. Alen N. Cohen helps patients maintain nose and sinus health at the Southern California Sinus Institute in West Hills, whatever the season or cause.

“Many people in Southern California experience congestion due to seasonal or perennial allergies," explains Dr. Cohen. “If the mucus can't drain from the sinuses, then infection, postnasal drip, cough, sinus pain, and pressure often develop.”

The Southern California Sinus Institute specializes in minimally invasive office-based, outpatient surgical procedures to relieve seasonal and perennial allergies, nasal and sinus obstruction, recurrent sinus infections, nasal/sinus polyps, and sinus headaches. They offer a full range of sinus care, from blood allergy testing to sinus CT scans and treatments. They treat a variety of nasal conditions from deviated septum, where the nasal cartilage shifts out of alignment, often restricting airways, to

148 Calabasas style

Treating nasal obstruction, sinusitis, sinus headaches, deviated septum, snoring, and more

chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps, which are growths that appear where the sinuses open into the nasal cavity. Larger polyps can cause obstruction as well as loss of smell, leading to frequent congestion.

People suffering from more than three or four sinus attacks per year, or symptoms lasting over two to three months, may benefit from a quick 30-minute in-office Balloon Sinuplasty ® procedure. Chronic sinusitis can usually be handled in the doctor's office under local anesthesia. More-advanced cases may require a short outpatient surgical procedure. Either way, Dr. Cohen can resolve nose and sinus issues permanently.

The doctor recommends a variety of treatments for environmental allergies and sinusitis, including sinus rinses or saline sprays to help clear allergens or irritants in the nose and sinuses. He also suggests sprays, including Flonase ® , Nasacort ® , and Astelin ® ; decongestants, such

as Sudafed ® ; or antihistamines, including Claritin ® , Zyrtec ® , and Allegra ® . Some patients may also require oral antibiotics or oral steroids to alleviate any infection or inflammation.

A board-certified otolaryngologist/ENT surgeon specializing in rhinology (nose and sinus disorders), Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Rhinologic Society (FARS). He is also CEO and founder of the prestigious C/V ENT Surgical Group with offices in Encino and West Hills. As one of only a dozen nationwide-designated Sinus Centers of Excellence, Dr. Cohen trains other ENT doctors in the art of in-office Balloon Sinuplasty. A Los Angeles Magazine Super Doctor since 2013 and a Castle-Connelly Nationwide Top Doctor since 2017, Dr. Cohen has performed more sinus balloon procedures than anyone in Los Angeles. These require virtually minimal recovery time. Patients can breathe easy knowing their health is in excellent hands every day of the year. n

MAYORAL LUNCHEON FOR DAVID J. SHAPIRO

The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce honored Calabasas Mayor David J. Shapiro at the Annual Mayoral Luncheon on August 17 on the terrace at Calabasas Country Club. Over 150 guests, chamber members, city officials, and community sponsors attended the event, including California State Senator Ben Allen, representing the 24th Senate District, and Congresswoman Julia Brownley, representing California's 26th District. Also in attendance was Steve Freedland, mayor of Hidden Hills, and Chris Anstead, mayor of Agoura Hills.

David Shapiro has served on the Calabasas City Council since January 25, 2012, and served as the city's mayor from 2014 to 2015 and then for a second term from 2018 to 2019. He is currently in his third term as mayor—from 2020 to 2023. The overall theme of Mayor Shapiro’s speech was “partnership,” and he stressed that much of the great success and many accomplishments of the City of Calabasas are due to the vast number of partnerships and alliances that the city and city council members have forged since Calabasas was incorporated on April 5, 1991. In his role as mayor, David’s primary goals are to keep the City of Calabasas safe and prepared for natural disasters and to keep the city financially strong. David is also a true advocate in supporting the LVUSD schools and students and the senior community, and he continues to provide environmental leadership.

The four Elite Sponsors for the Mayoral Luncheon were The Wella Company, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, Waste Management, and The Commons at Calabasas. Table sponsors included Michael Bloom, Realtor at The Agency; the Law Offices of Mark L. Levinson; West Hills Hospital and Medical Center; and the City of Calabasas.

Cinnamon Swirl Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Butter Bread

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Grease a (9x5 inch) bread pan. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the pumpkin butter, pumpkin puree, melted butter, maple syrup, eggs, and vanilla until combined. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and salt; mix until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips. In a bowl, combine the granulated sugar with the remaining 1 tablespoon of cinnamon.

Spoon half the pumpkin batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar, reserving 2 tablespoons of sugar for topping the loaf. Add the remaining batter over the sugar. Run a knife down the center of the loaf 1 to 2 times to gently swirl the sugar. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar over top of the batter.

Transfer to the oven and bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until the center is just set. Cover the bread with foil at the 30-minute mark to prevent the top from burning. Remove the bread and let cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting.

Ingredients

1/2 cup pumpkin butter

1/2 cup pumpkin puree

1/2 cup melted salted butter

1/2 cup pure maple syrup

2 large eggs, at room temperature

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. + 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp. ground ginger

1/4 tsp. ground cloves

The Allure of California’s HIGHWAY 1 T

raversing California’s Highway 1, commonly known as the Pacific Coast Highway, offers a quintessential experience of our California coast, one steeped in breathtaking natural vistas and vibrant culture. Extending over 650 miles alongside the Pacific Ocean, this iconic thoroughfare facilitates a journey that engages all senses: the magnificent scenery, the invigorating smell of the sea, and the soothing sound of waves breaking against the shore. Those privileged with time should seize the opportunity to explore the stretch from Malibu to Monterey, a trip that promises to be indelibly etched in one’s memory.

Embarking from Malibu: An overture in natural elegance

Our journey begins in the coastal enclave of Malibu, often associated with celebrity residences and private beaches. However, to anyone local, we know the true magnetism of Malibu lies in its preserved natural beauty. The sandy stretches of Zuma Beach offer an authentic entry point to Southern California’s distinctive surf culture. A visit to Point Dume State Beach provides an opportunity for a modest hike that culminates in a rewarding visual

158 Calabasas style

A scenic journey from Malibu to Monterey

experience. On days graced by clear skies, one may even be fortunate to glimpse the distant Channel Islands against the vast backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

Santa Barbara: A fusion of Mediterranean and Californian attitudes

Continuing northward, approximately two hours from Malibu, you will reach the city of Santa Barbara. The landscape where California’s native beauty melds seamlessly with a Mediterranean aura. Palm trees and Spanish colonial architecture punctuate the scenery, substantiating its moniker as the “American Riviera.”

A visit to the Santa Barbara Mission offers an engaging historical perspective, showcasing the city as a living museum of California’s past. For the art and food enthusiast, the Funk Zone provides an eclectic blend of

galleries, eateries, and wine-tasting venues that express Santa Barbara’s unique culture.

Morro Bay: The charm of unpretentious beauty

Continuing the journey north, our next stop is Morro Bay. The skyline here is dramatically punctuated by Morro Rock, an extinct volcanic plug that stands sentinel at the entrance to the harbor. This humble fishing community provides an oasis of tranquility amid the grandeur of the Californian coast. For those who enjoy fresh seafood, Morro Bay offers an abundance of local fish markets and independent restaurants, each committed to serving seafood of unparalleled freshness. For adventurers keen on a more tactile engagement with the environment, kayaking within the bay allows for a close-up experience with the resident wildlife, which ranges from playful sea otters to seals basking in the sun.

The sublime artistry of Bixby Creek Bridge and Big Sur

As we advance along the iconic highway, the quaint coastal town of Cayucos serves as a brief yet charming waypoint, a prelude to one of the journey’s architectural and scenic highlights. Emerging on the horizon is the aweinspiring Bixby Creek Bridge, a marvel of engineering set against a stunning natural backdrop. This structure serves a role beyond mere functionality; it acts as a metaphoric threshold, signaling a shift from one remarkable phase of the journey to another even more transcendent one.

Upon crossing the Bixby Creek Bridge, you enter the realm of Big Sur, a geographic masterpiece that can be considered nothing short of nature’s own gallery. This stretch of coastline is where the ethereal grandeur of California’s landscapes achieves an almost mythical status. The towering redwood forests stand as ancient sentinels, their lofty heights dwarfing those who pass beneath their canopies. These magnificent trees eventually give way to a series of steep, jagged cliffs that serve as a dramatic frame for the vistas beyond.

Monterey: A confluence of marine splendor and artistic heritage

Our journey concludes in Monterey, a city distinguished for its exceptional marine life and its contributions to American literature and art. A visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium is requisite; the Open Sea exhibit stands as a vivid testament to the complexity of marine life, offering an immersive experience that brings visitors face-toface with the natural wonders of the oceanic world.

In addition to its ecological treasures, Monterey offers a dive into American history and literature through Cannery Row. This waterfront street once served as the nucleus of a bustling sardine-packing industry, an era immortalized in prose by the iconic American writer John Steinbeck in his novel also titled Cannery Row. The area serves as a tangible link to the city’s past, presenting both historical resonance and modern-day attractions, including a variety of shops and restaurants that continue to draw visitors.

The journey along Highway 1 from Malibu to Monterey provides an unparalleled travel experience that encapsulates the multifaceted essence of California. Each destination en route boasts its own unique charm and attractions, yet they are united by the omnipresent allure of the Pacific coastline. The drive serves as a sublime testament to the beauty and cultural richness of the Californian landscape—an experience that invites adjectives yet ultimately transcends them. n

Robby Krieger

Headlining the Sagebrush Cantina music festival

By Judy Abel Photography by Jo Lopez

Legendary guitarist for the Doors to celebrate

55th anniversary of “Waiting for the Sun”

The music of the iconic rock band the Doors will be featured this October at the 2023 edition of the eagerly anticipated Sagebrush Cantina Music, Food & Fun Festival. This year’s headliner is Doors guitarist and founding member Robby Krieger.

Krieger was an unthinkable 19 years old when he joined Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, and meditation buddy John Densmore to form the epochal Los Angeles-based psychedelic quartet in 1965. When the Doors broke onto the scene, their swirling jazzinflected improvisations and brooding, Blake-ian lyrics were the antithesis of the then-dominant San Francisco-based peace and love stylings. The baritone crooning by a Dionysian Morrison matched Krieger’s hypnotic fingerpicking, which mixed garage rock chords with folk, jazz, and classical guitar.

The band’s self-titled debut album was a smash in no small part due to the first song Krieger penned for the group at the urging of the band’s frontman, Morrison. “Light My Fire” shot up the charts with the group’s signature sound, and it remains a lasting gift for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist. The song has been covered by artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Shirley Bassey, Julie London, and of course, Jose Feliciano. Krieger recalls, “It was pretty crazy. It certainly sold the most. The main thing is more people copied that song than any other Doors song.” Krieger went on to write several of the Doors’ most enduring hits, including “Love Me Two Times” from the group’s sophomore effort and horn-heavy “Touch Me,” which features a blistering solo by jazz saxophonist Curtis Amy.

Krieger’s appearance at the festival promises to feature “mostly the Doors music. It’s the 55th anniversary of our album ‘Waiting for the Sun,’ so we’ll be doing most of the songs from that record and a lot of others too.”

It’s anticipated that Krieger, named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, could be joined on stage by some celebrated musicians he’s befriended over the course of a sixdecade career. “Definitely,” says Krieger. “That happens more often than not.” At 77, Krieger’s not touring as frequently as he once did. “Not a whole lot. Not that much since covid.”

During the pandemic, he created a widely celebrated series of YouTube guitar tutorials. “It seems to be pretty popular,” shares Krieger. He’s thinking of adding a few more lessons where he showcases his memorable riffs and lessons on improvisation.

Krieger confirmed that he never plays a solo the same way twice. “I try to keep it fresh. Back in the Doors days…it was always different every night,” he explains. “I look upon it as more of a freeform kind of a deal. I’ve got some licks I’ve been doing for the last four or five years that have stuck, but you never know what’s going to come out.”

continued on page 164

Calabasas style 163

Expect some new music too. Krieger just finished a song about Brandon Lee, star of The Crow and son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. “Some of my friends are trying to get a movie made about Brandon’s life,” he says. “Lou Diamond Phillips wrote the screenplay, and to get it going, I wrote a song for it. It came out pretty good.”

Today, the soft-spoken Krieger seems the antithesis of the smirking badass featured in the Doors’ 1968 performance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour variety show, where the guitarist sports a prominent black eye. “They wanted me to wear makeup, but I thought it would be kind of cool to just go along with it and have a black eye and have some controversy,” Krieger says. The genesis of that

Robby Krieger

shiner has been a source of persistent journalistic inquiry ever since, with rumors of Krieger failing to duck a punch meant for his unpredictable bandmate Morrison or even Morrison decking Krieger in a barroom brawl. The speculation was concededly fueled by contradicting stories told over the years by the Doors themselves. For those interested, Krieger comes clean with the real story, recounting a sad chapter in his life in his recently published memoir, Set the Night on Fire: Living, Dying, and Playing Guitar with the Doors

While a baby boomer icon for more than five decades, Krieger seems delighted that he’s being discovered by younger fans now too. “It’s cool both ways,” he says. “But I really do love it when a young kid comes up and says he loves the music, because that’s going to be a whole new generation.” Krieger reminisces about a 10 year old who approached him after a performance last year at the Santa Monica Pier, “The kid had a little toy piano and he said, ‘Hey, listen to this,’ and he played ‘Riders on the Storm.’ He played Ray [Manzarek]’s solo perfectly. I’m sure I’ll see him again. He was amazing.”

You can catch Krieger along with his son Waylon on October 7 at the Sagebrush Cantina Music, Food & Fun Festival.
