Meanwhile, our friends in freight have set the following guidelines around delivery: 1-day for the North Island and 2-6 days for the South Island. Rural areas allow an extra 24-48 hours. What’s new at PrimeHort HQ?

Keeping our finger on the pulse, we’re looking at ways to add-value to the industry that sustains us. Here’s a few of our latest ideas, dreams and schemes.

1. Greenhouse Solutions – we have strengthened our offering on polyhouses from basic tunnels to multi span or a tailored warehouse.

2. Sustainability – we’re making inroads in sustainability, both in our own operations and the industry we serve. Our friends at Sustainable Kaipara have visited PrimeHort to identify solutions to better manage our warehouse waste - which we have now implemented. In a drive to move away from plastic, we’ve heavily invested in our Biodegradable Pot range by Fertilpot (suitable for automation up to 1.3L). Also, our FibreCell Paper Pot products and the FibreCell Paper Pot Filling Machine has the industry talking. We would be delighted to discuss the merits of a paper based growing system with our customers.

3. Vertical Farming – Using technology to change the future of food production in a sustainable manner - now that’s exciting!

We have been heavily researching Vertical Farming and visited a fully robotic system in Italy. PrimeHort are excited to offer you the products and services to make it happen, and the benefits are vast: easy to install, strategic use of vacant warehousing, floor to ceiling productivity - more food/less space, ‘beyond organic’ e.g. no pesticides or herbicides, water savings, climate controlled, year-round production – the merits are stacking up!

4. Going Bananas! – Well not literally, but we’re looking into it. Worldwide banana production is under threat from fungal disease. Northland has a compatible environment for production, could this be a new growth market? Watch this space.

5. Community Planting Day – We’ve reached out to a local Northland organisation to offer PrimeHort elbow grease as they get more native plants in the ground. We’re looking forward to our planting day soon!

In 2022, the doors swung open on our new purposebuilt warehouse, showroom and offices. Aptly named Greenway Heights, this dynamic 4,000sqm facility caters for growth and new capabilities at PrimeHort. But ultimately it will look after our customers and team by providing a great place to visit and work.

Greenway Heights was once home to a longhorn cattle ranch and is now a dynamic business park with exciting plans in the pipeline. One of the drawcards of our site is a strategic location. Situated on State Highway 1 gives PrimeHort an edge for servicing customers. The building and site layout enables smooth delivery of products from our workplace to yours. Our freight logistics have never looked sharper.

5. Crown researcher, SCION, required a partner to lead their nursery redevelopment project. Some of the initiatives included a customised automated lean-flow, environmentally sustainable propagation facility, along with a sophisticated irrigation and greenhouse climate control hub with a role of fast-tracking plant growth and providing full control over temperature, humidity, CO2, light, irrigation and nutrition. Fe = Iron: (6.7) Iron is a catalyst to chlorophyll formation. The secret of dark rich colour.

S = Sulphur: (0.56) Soil and plant food that restores optimum growth.

Mg = Magnesium: (1.1) Necessary for the production of chlorophyll, remedy for magnesium deficiencies (yellowing of mature leaves with white stripes between leaf veins).

Harvestwear bin covers are made from LightBloc, a technically advanced polyethylene cloth with a special reflective coating to reflect strong summer sunlight, ultraviolet rays and the consequent heat generation. With its ability to reflect the light, repress the heat absorption and help to block UV rays, this bin cover will protect your freshly picked fruit. Industry studies have shown exposure of fruit to temperatures over 25°C has a cumulative detrimental effect on its shelf life. Scientifically controlled experiments have shown Harvestwear’s LightBloc to be capable of keeping fruit temperature below the ambient air temperature - even when the bin is placed in direct sunlight. A blackout coating laminated on the reverse side eliminates light transfer through the cloth. High-tech synthetic budding and grafting film. Has a unique formulation which allows for easy and fast application, reducing your labour costs, and allows for high grafting and budding success rates. The rolls are perforated (at either 50 or 70mm perforations) which saves hours in labour as no tying or removing is necessary as each length is sufficient for one graft. Some unique points:

ELASTICITY: Buddy Tape can be stretched up to 8 times its original length. This allows small pieces to be used for the application and ensures a tight grip on the bud or graft. Elasticity also means that the tape expands as the plant grows.

SELF-ADHESION: Buddy Tape is not adhesive in its normal form but becomes self-adhesive when stretched. This allows quick application with no need for tying knots.

MECHANICAL STRENGTH

Fertilpots are designed to retain their strength during the growth cycle, but degrade quickly after planting into the next container or landscape. Under greenhouse conditions small pots can be expected to retain their structural integrity for 4-5 months and larger pots from 12-15 months (10-13 months in outdoor nursery conditions).

PERMEABILITY / BIODEGRADING

Because water, air, and roots will penetrate the walls of the Fertilpot so easily, there is no need for drainage holes. Its unique composition allows

water and air to permeate the pot, thereby assisting growth. Look closely at how open and porous the wall of a Fertilpot is. Even the finest of root hairs are penetrating the wall, forcing even more natural branching in the root structure.

Fertilpots break down by the actions of microbes in the soil or potting mix. For most regions in New Zealand, Fertilpot will be signficantly degraded in about 4-5 months (depending on soil conditions). However due to the permeability of the pots they will allow natural development in the soil as if it were not there.

AERIAL ROOT PRUNING

When plants are grown in a Fertilpot, the roots quickly penetrate the pot walls. Contact with the air stops the roots from elongating, root buds start to appear and secondary roots start to develop throughout the pot. A dense network of root hairs develops throughout the whole pot.

Here you can see the lateral branching developing after the roots’ apical dominance has been stunted by air-pruning. This gives the plant many more root tips with which to uptake water and nutrients.

FASTER GROWTH

In containers with impermeable walls, a few very long roots dominate the root system, reducing overall root development. This difference in quality of the root system is the main explanation for the marked difference in development between two identical plants grown in a Fertilpot (left) and a plastic pot (right).

ADVANTAGES

The pot biodegrades 100% after being in the ground for 4-5 months. The pot turns into humus and is converted into minerals for the plant.

To ensure ongoing accuracy, you should calibrate your pH pen on a regular basis. Calibration is a two-step process. First, clean your pH pen and then calibrate to two pH points using Bluelab pH buffer solutions (pH 4.0 and 7.0). The on-screen information will guide you through the process. Once complete, the calibration symbol will appear on your screen. You should recalibrate whenever the calibration symbol disappears or after cleaning your pen. If you take daily measurements, you’ll need to calibrate more frequently.

Conductivity pens are factory calibrated and won’t need further calibration; however, you should clean your pen regularly.

Instead, you should clean your Bluelab EC probe and then use Bluelab 2.77 EC Conductivity Standard Solution - 500 ml to check that cleaning has been successful.

Our 10gram SmartGro Fert tabs are made in Europe and are a high nutrient long chain nitrogen tab feeding for 2 years. These are specifically designed for supplemental fertilization of a wide range of trees and shrubs (both mature and seedlings) in loose soil and in pots.

They promote the growth of plants in infertile, damaged, eroded, acidic or waste rock soils. They are very effective in forestry, horticulture and in reclamation areas.

The action is based on the slow release of nutrients from Ureaform (Methyleneurea polycondensates – source of nitrogen) and potassium-magnesium phosphates in soil.

SmartGro Water Crystals

A superabsorbent potassium-based crystal designed to increase the water holding capacity of any soil by acting as a water reservoir. They can absorb up to 700x their own weight to form a gel. Water crystals increase the availability of water to plants and help prevent plant stress. These are a safeguard against dry conditions and help increase plant survival rates in dry or sandy areas. When planting it is recommended to add 10g of crystals to every litre of plant size. For example a 1L plant is best recommended to have 10 grams of water crystals.

A safe and easy-to-use Soil Mixer, suitable for mixing most media types

It has a 1000L hopper designed for rapid mixing. 3 – 5 minutes per cycle. The mixer comes with a powerful 6.2kW, 400V motor to drive its internal mixing screw.

It has a touch screen control panel where adjustments can be made to mixing time, substrate hydration and automatic/manual unloading. It comes with a 2300mm long soil exit conveyor to unload directly into other machines such as (Paperpot machines, Tray Fillers, Potting Machines, Soil Bunkers, etc).

Seeder LR603

In the Da Ros LR603, a trough is first punched for optimum seed placement. Subsequently, the seed, which is held with a vacuum at the roller, is deposited from a small drop height directly above the trough. A multi-grain tray is also possible. The seed is sown and irrigated electronically with sand or vermiculite. Finally, the trays are stacked and pushed onto a roller track.

This column is equipped with three separate seeding units. All data of the trays to be processed are stored in the machine and can be easily retrieved by the operator. The LR603 can easily be connected to the Da Ros Tray filling machine mod. RC7. The LR603 then takes over the control of the tray filling machine, which leads to a considerable increase in performance. The kits are easy to exchange so that other seeds can be quickly converted.

Potting Machine 13-P

The I3-P Potting Machine is probably the most popular Potting machine for growers in New Zealand. Its high level of safety, multiple potting adjustments, for various potting requirements and being a relatively well-priced machine make the I3-P an excellent choice for hard-working plant producers. The machine comes standard with an 1800L hopper. The hopper has two, fold-down sides so it can be loaded from either side.

The Soil feed speed can be adjusted via a mechanical speed dial according to the soil demand of the pot. It comes with stainless steel soil elevator paddles for long-life wear and tear.

The potting conveyor comes optional between 3 - 6m lengths. This conveyor is speed adjustable and has a tray holder mounted for quick and easy planting. It comes with an automatic pot in-feed conveyor which automatically loads the pot magazine as the machine continues to use its pots.

The pot sizing adjustment and pot de-nester are simple to adjust for pots between 8 – 20cm diameter.

The machine de-nests the pot, fills with soil and drills a hole ready for the person to drop the plant into the hole as it travels along the conveyor. Drill hole size and drill depth can be easily adjusted.

Potting capacity is between 1000 – 2500 pots per hour.

Potting Machine I3-E

Electronic Potting Machine featuring a colour touchscreen control panel for automatic setting of potting and transplant speed, soil quantity speed, drill direction and depth. The pot take-off conveyor can be positioned left, right (or parallel as per in the image). Pot change-over is very simple by means of replacing 1 x plate to match the desired pot size. Potting Machine I5

This is a very tidy, compact machine, and is the “go-to” potting machine for leading edge nurseries. The I5 is simple to use and the changeover between pot sizes is effortless and fast!

It comes with an electronic interface control panel. Here you can set programs for your different pot sizes, set your pot numbers, speed of potting, including conveyor speed and soil feed volume, drilling (hole) depth and drill direction.

The machine is also fitted with alarms to alert the operator if soil or the pot denester is getting low; to ensure continuous production, and no unnecessary stoppages. With the I5 and its ease of adjustments, you have the ability to accurately feed follow-on machines like a transplanter.

In today’s industry, health & safety is a major factor in the employment sector. With the operator in mind, DAROS have fitted the I5 with an enclosed potting carousel and guards on potentially dangerous moving parts to ensure maximum operator safety.

The I5 is suitable for both round and square pots between 0.5L – 9L.

Automate to Boost Productivity

Leithfield Nursery is a wellestablished business in Southland producing forestry seedlings on a large scale. Early in 2022, the team approached PrimeHort with an open brief to transition some of their operations from inground planting (selling bare-root pine trees) to a containerised system in the 64 Cell Forestry Trays. The motivation to automate for Leithfield was compelling – they had a presold contract for “as many plants as possible”. So the goal was set at 2.5 million pine seedlings ready for sowing by September, which gave PrimeHort a tight deadline of about nine months from initial discussion.

The first site visit revealed a large flat paddock with old established trees. Based on our advice, stage one saw Leithfield clear the paddock and prep it with metal drainage and electrical and water supply lines. From here the first equipment to be installed was a customised DaRos Seeding Line so the team could start sowing while we pressed on with getting the Outdoor Benches and Irrigation Booms installed.

For the completion of the growing season, PrimeHort specified a suitable Tray Washer so all of the Forestry Trays can be effortlessly cleaned and sterilised ready for next season. An operation of this

scale also requires an innovative production system. An Automated Plug Popper machine has been installed and de-pops seedlings from their trays in a quick, hasslefree manner – up to 400 trays per hour. The end customer receives the pine seedlings in a ready-toplant manner.

This time-pressured project went very smoothly. For PrimeHort, it was an exciting undertaking with Leithfield investing circa $1.5m for a custom-designed set up. Our automation and projects team enjoyed the challenge of a looming deadline and recognising the importance of strong communication and wellresearched technical advice, including details around expected power usage, water volumes and fertiliser requirements. Accurate cost estimates were also vital to ensure no ‘hidden costs’ or stress to the client.

The end result is an impressive nursery where the sky’s the limit. We were delighted to assist Leithfield and look forward to growing with the team.

Towards the end of 2016 after doing a lot of market research Seedling Systems made the decision to purchase our first travelling irrigation booms to replace our traditional overhead sprinkler system.

We had looked at a number of possibilities including the idea of using a mobile watering boom to move between bays, but quickly discovered this required someone to be at the nursery whenever we needed to water.

We decided fixed booms while more expensive, meant less labour costs overtime and once in place, better control on our crops.

We had in earlier days settled with the fact of using typical overhead sprinkler systems throughout our glass houses and these did little more than just apply water to our seedlings when required.

What we felt, is that while we continually strive to offer a quality product to our customers with increased demands on supply and quality, we realised that we had to do something to get our plants to the market quicker.

We decided that we could greatly affect this by bettering the quality of our watering and fertigation application to our plants; and an overhead watering boom was one way to achieve this.

We chose the DAROS watering booms which were by no means the cheapest in the market but were more importantly a class above in both hardware and functionality.

We knew of a number of other reputable growers who had invested in these DAROS booms including; Waimea Nurseries, Leaderbrand in Ashburton and Gisborne, Appletons Tree Nursery and Southern Cypresses, which gave us peace-of-mind we had made the right decision.

By investing in the DAROS watering booms we were able to very accurately improve the growth stages of our seedlings. Our plant growth is very even and we can now stay on top of our customers’ demands for a superior product.

With the DAROS booms we can achieve watering and fertigation that you could never achieve with overhead sprinklers or hand watering. With the DAROS booms,

we have the ability to set multiple watering zones and watering times for different seedling needs. We also do all our fert dosing through the booms. We can also operate any of our booms remotely giving us better control on differing crops.

Other good things to mention is, it is very simple to fix any blockage in the nozzles or change nozzle types if we choose to use a different water droplet size.

The booms are silent when operating and because of their ridged structure are not affected by swaying from wind. There is also no pipes hanging in the walkways.

We are extremely happy with the DAROS watering booms; they reflect the professionality and market leader recognition that Seedling Systems is aiming for.

We can honestly say, that as our company continues to expand we would not look anywhere else for watering booms and would recommend DAROS as the watering booms of choice for any grower interested in investing in superior greenhouse irrigation.

A food grade harvesting unit suitable for a wide variety of baby leaf and microgreen cut product. Adaptable to most tray types including hydroponic systems in polystyrene trays and gutter systems. Working speed and cutting height are easily adjustable from a simple to use control board. The high speed cutting blade allows a very clean cut without damaging the plant stem to avoid the onset of rotting.

Our LED NATURAL Light Trolley incorporates a specific technology –in terms of both light distribution/intensity and light spectrum. This can help in maximising the quantity and quality of your plants. Our LED NATURAL lights produce a bright and homogeneous lighting recipe that is ideal for stimulating plant growth.

LED NATURAL light explained:

From laboratory tests, a red, blue and white light spectrum has been developed which generates an intense purplish colour to the eye. The red/blue light ratio is 1:1, with a double red peak to optimize the photosynthetic process. The white light base is necessary to optimize the physiological processes of the plant.

Types of use for the NATURAL light spectrum: All varieties we want to grow indoors with accelerated growth. Specific light for baby leaf varieties, microgreens or microvegetables; here are some examples:

SAFETY SIGNAGE

Signage is a safety requirement in Workplaces to inform and advise workers, other people in the workplace, and emergency service workers of hazards around.

Hazardous substances are required when you have certain hazardous substances exceeding specified quantities (see www. hazardoussubstances.govt.nz). Even if you don’t require signs, it is still best practice to have them for notifying hazards.

So where do you need to display signs? Your signs need to be near the substances, but not too close, because people need to know about the danger before it’s too late.

Don’t put signs:

• Where objects may hide or cover them

• Beside doors or gates that could cover them when open

• Above doors, where smoke could conceal them.

If you are not sure signs are in the right place, look around the places where you store hazardous substances (e.g. storage cabinets, dedicated storage areas). Make it as easy as possible for workers and emergency service workers to know about the hazards.

As a general rule if hazardous substances are:

• In a room, put a sign at the entrance to the room

• In a building, put a sign at every entrance to the building

• In a building on your land, put a sign at every entrance to the land

• Outdoors, put a sign immediately next to the storage area.
