Over 9 million visitors enjoy Panama City Beach each year. The legendary pure white sand of Panama City Beach is attributed to quartz crystals washing down from the Appalachian Mountains centuries ago. Along their journey, the crystals were bleached, ground, smoothed, and polished. The surf and tides of the Gulf of Mexico deposit these millions of grains onto the pristine shoreline.

Panama City Beach weather is subtropical, with a year-round temperature averaging 74 degrees. Panama City Beach is bordered on either side by state parks: St. Andrews and Camp Helen. As a dive destination, the city is known as the Wreck Capital of the South due to the large number of historic shipwrecks and artificial reefs for divers to explore.

A community-coordinated project with Panama City Marine Institute led to the development of 50 artificial reefs off Panama City Beach. The natural reefs range in depth from 80 to 100 feet, are just a few miles offshore, and are teeming with sea life, including small corals and colorful sponges. Fishing is a favorite pastime for locals and visitors. Our Twin Piers are among the longest on the Gulf Coast and provide an ideal platform for anglers. Or, head offshore with one of Panama City Beach’s expert charter fishing captains. Our Gulf waters are home to red snapper, flounder, grouper, mackerel, trout, pompano, cobia, sailfish, and much, much more! The area boasts one of the highest concentrations of bottlenose dolphins in the world. The Intracoastal Waterway runs through St. Andrew Bay. The Florida Ironman Triathlon has been held here since 1999. Panama City Beach is home to the only deepwater diving museum in the U.S., the Museum of Man in the Sea. The Beach Ball Drop on New Year’s Eve attracts 30,000 visitors each year.

With more than 280 species of birds having been spotted in Northwest Florida, Panama City Beach is a bird-watcher’s delight. Osprey, great blue herons, shorebirds, woodpeckers, and songbirds can be seen in the area year-round; great crested flycatchers, warblers, and tanagers are found here as well.

SHELLS SHELLS NAT IVE TO PANAMA C ITY BEACH
Primarily composed of quartz crystals, Panama City Beach’s sugary sands present a breathtaking contrast to the rich aqua and emerald hues of the Gulf of Mexico. A closer inspection of the beaches also reveals a treasure trove of seashells. Like jewels washed ashore from a pirate shipwreck, they display a rainbow of colors and dimensions. While shells can be found along any of the 27 miles of Panama City Beach, a preferred location is Shell Island, an uninhabited nature preserve that is part of St. Andrews State Park. Collectors also spot some of their most spectacular shells while diving or snorkeling. Whether on land or in the water, the following species represent a sampling of shells that are indigenous to the area:

From the sandy marshes and tidal flats of St. Andrew Bay to the rocky depths where the continental shelf plunges to the Gulf floor, the waters off Panama City Beach teem with marine life. For hundreds of years, long before Spanish explorers and pirates roamed the seas, Native Americans flourished from the Gulf of Mexico’s bounty. Today, pro anglers and amateurs alike continue to catch an array of species, including amberjack, bluefish, cobia, flounder, grouper, king and Spanish mackerel, mahi mahi, marlin, pompano, redfish (or red drum), red snapper, trout, wahoo, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna.
