No more Thai
Thai Original BBQ Restaurant in Studio City has closed after 18 years along Ventura Boulevard. The casual staple spot left a note taped to its door that read in part: “We provided the comfortable atmosphere and we love our customers. Most of our customers had been with us for long time, with that we are forever grateful. We have developed many real friendship with many of our regular customers and we will miss them. But now, our time has come to move on to the next chapter of our lives. We are retiring and would like to enjoy time with our children.” As for what’s next, it seems that Guy Bachar, owner of Imperial Tile & Stone, has taken over with plans to open an unnamed sushi restaurant.
Changing of the guard
Maurice Solomon is stepping away from day to day operations at Fromin’s Deli, the Santa Monica restaurant he has called home for decades. Prior to co-operating Fromin’s, Solomon made a name for himself with Brentwood Country Mart legen Marjan’s, which he ran for 15 years.
Deal time
Downtown’s Hock + Hoof is doing a great lunchtime deal, offering buy-one-get-one 50% off all sandwiches during the day.
James Beard dinners
The James Beard Foundation is returning to Los Angeles this fall for a series of events, kicking off Friday, October 12. It all goes down at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, and features dinners from names like Andrew Carmellini, Ludo Lefebvre, Wes Avila, Pawan Mahendro, Curtis Stone, and more.
OC comeback
The OC Register says that former 40-year restaurant Mr. Stox is coming back, at least for one night only, at the Anaheim White House. Mr. Stox owners and former managers are even returning to help run the show, serving lost Stox options like crab cakes and osso buco as part of a prix fixe dinner that runs $85 a head. It all goes down at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, and reservations are recommended.
Juice is loose
There’s a new healthy juice spot open in Sherman Oaks these days. It’s the third installment of Greenhouse Juice Bar, doing everything from acai bowls to matcha to pressed juices from a small space at 13569 Ventura Boulevard.
Burrito talks
