The results are in from finals at Val Di Sole after a wild
semi-finals earlier in the day.
In the elite women's racing, we saw a repeat of the top two from Leogang as Vali Höll takes back-to-back World Cup wins ahead of 2022 World Cup overall winner Camille Balanche.
Vali Höll looked unmatched on the black snake as she took control of the wild course conditions to power her way to another victory in 2023. Camille Balanche has had to settle for her third 2nd place this season as she couldn't find an answer to the hard-charging Austrian. Jess Blewitt had a great performance in Val Di Sole as she managed to take third place and even managed to pull back some time against Vali's winning run in the final sector to the finish line.
Speaking about the tough challenge of Val Di Sole track, Vali Höll said in her post-race interview: "It's just so hard to keep the momentum and keep the strength up on this track. It's so physical and it's so rough, it's just hard to hold on."
Some last-minute rain caused an upset for the start of the elite men's race as the first riders had slightly better conditions than the mid-pack riders. By the time the race headed towards its conclusion the sun came out and baked the track allowing Jackson Goldstone to blow the race apart on his way to a first elite World Cup win.
Jackson Goldstone may have made a few mistakes at the top of the course but he quickly got back on pace to master the changing conditions and cross the line in the green. Finn Iles tried to best his fellow Canadian but he couldn't quite match the leading pace and would cross the line 2.224 seconds back. Thibaut Daprela had one of the wildest runs of the day but a big mistake in the lower woods lost him 1.8 seconds and the lead, the French racer ends his weekend in third.
After taking his first elite World Cup win Jackson Goldstone said: "I don't have many words to say I'm just so excited. The run was just on the edge the whole time right out the first corner I was already pushing really hard and yeah I just escaped with all those mistakes I made and somehow kept the flow going."

Finn and Jackson did chainsaw proud today!
We’re in for a hell of a season now that it’s finally going! … which ends in Mount Saint Anne!!
And Get well Jordan. You were the best all week. 2nd with a flat in qualis???
I am sure he will come back with those cigarettes one day...
I just sent an email to cbc sports to remind them that mountain biking exists. Feel free to do the same:

Edit I stand corrected, they just did an ig post the next day
But when they both cannot comprehend how, when the rider with the current fastest time clearly lost 2 seconds due to a mistake at the bottom, everyone else is gaining two seconds in the same sector on that time, then how can I take any of their 'professional' opinions seriously?
Personally I'm averse to hysteria as the default mode. I believe good commentary can enhance the spectacle - but bad commentary can ruin events unless one uses the mute button, as I was obliged to do whenever Murray Walker was commentating on motorcycle races. (I could care less about F1)
The negative comments have made me hesitate about signing up for GCN. I doubt I'll do it now
But why oh why was Cedric losing his mind when Daprela rested his hands while on a smooth wooden traverse? Yes Cedric, he took his hands off the bars. It was straight. It was smooth. It was not “insane”.
The video, however, is better than ever, so give credit where due. We get more track coverage, and even at low res, the follow drone is sick, and awesome to do that on a live feed! It’s only gonna get better as the tech improves.
Make the finish line time differential highlighted in green or red and make it bigger. Smallest font, buried below, and not highlighted makes it hard to find.
Y’all: dude is clearly saying there’s no excitement in the commentary. He’s saying that the racing is so good that we can all imagine the way Rob would be yelling and hyping us up and absolutely losing his mind.
Just because I think something is missing in the commentary doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. It's not black and white mate.
Despite all the criticism he received, one thing Claudio did really well was analyzing the timing on splits compared to the top rider’s section speed and mistakes. This has completely disappeared, and the timing analysis is reduced to binary and useless green/red comments.
He's not, that's how.
(Although I understand the critics of the commentary much more than those about the "lack" of track coverage, because that objectively has improved, yet somehow people complain..)
And that's from someone who is losing the ability to give this new broadcasting team the benefit of the doubt. It currently looks like a bit of a cowboy operation.
But Claudio can f*ck off into space.
As for the commentating, sorry but I couldn't hear him anyway over the sound of my keyboard smashing. See, I'm old. I still hammer my keyboard as if it were a mechanical keyboard (though I've learned to stop smashing the left side of my screen to start a new line).
While they obviously have many cameras, on large part of the track, they choose not to use them for most of the racing.
In junior finals and semi finals for most of the riders they only showed the first part of the track after the start hut, and the final part since the last turn before the big drop after the woods. Which were the most boring and unimportant parts of the track. It was really annoying, not to be able to see the important stuff that happened (even on replay, even though thay had cameras in the important and deciding sections).
It got us to the point of wondering if we're going to watch Jr finals and semi finals again. It was hard to engage really, it was more like live timing with slideshow pictures of the same over and over again.
Finals were a little better, but still the same for most of the women (they only showed some parts of the woods, and only for some of the women, which, considering there were only 15 women in finals, is embarrassing.
During the elite men's finals yesterday, starting with Bruni's run, GCN decided to change the quality to worst possible, it was 144p, war of ants type quality. It wasn't our connection - at the same 4K vids worked on YT, also we did restart everything, and the quality remained poor.
Mind you, GCN player does not allow you to choose quality of the picture, so there's nothing you can do. We decided to quit watching and tried again today - and it worked fine, but that's not what we expect from a paid service!
The commentary really doesn't make sense to me either at times.
BMX racing is a knockout format and nobody complains, the same goes for 4X.
That's only some examples of bike racing and there you have several disciplines where you race twice or more on the same day
I’m done.
Rob was best but man i Love watching the races.
Top 10 Riders Always make it so freaking fun to
Watch.
WE had only 3 races this year and damn all three we're so f*cking sick.
Best Sport ever? Think so
Like most people say Cedric isn’t.
Exactly the same sayings, quotes like before, Ric is the main commentator and is getting into his stride and could easily do the whole show on his own.
Things like:
Wow
Is carrying speed
Let the breaks go
On the edge
Taking a chance
So tight
He went out
He’s a green
Aggressive
Etc
Isn’t really adding any value :-(
He says to the bike, let’s go
The bike takes some beats
A few more classics
On the move!
But I genuinely can't fathom why they have Cedric doing it with him! If it's the "ex-rider knowledge" they were going for, think of how many other candidates there are who have English as their first language. Andrew Neethling would have been perfect for it!
It was the 3rd race of the season, and still so many flaws.
This was good for a couple races!
- “he know what to do!”
- “he says to the bike, let’s go!”
Also please stop the mid-race interviews
Yours,
The entire mtb community

Well, at least the enghlish, or polish. German commentary was great, again.
[Edit: I typed this comment and PB must have updated the live report to say the same thing before I hit the Submit button. Sorry for duplicating their effort!]
Ric, talking about Ronan Dunne. "Where does this speed come from?"
Cedric, "don't use the brakes!"
I mean, he's not wrong!
Although pretty sure Rob made the same mistake
If Vergier wins: Huge weekend for Trek Factory Racing: Kuhn, Vergier
Cedric: “don’t worry, he’s Canadian!”
Best line of the day
It’s enjoyable I will say but so was the old. Let’s see what happens at the end of a season and compare then, I think Redbull would have had a mad coverage for this format and would be free with Warner
Semi finals.
There you go.
