Update: Sam Hill Confirms 3 More Years with Nukeproof CRC Team

Three-time Enduro World Series champion Sam Hill appears to be hinting at some changes with his long-time sponsor Team Chain Reaction Cycles / Nukeproof. Sam has been with CRC Nukeproof since the 2013 season, winning three overall EWS championships and standing on 15 individual EWS podiums in his time there.

The man himself posted this on Instagram earlier.

While this is the ususal format for a rider leaving a brand, I suppose technically this isn't announcing his departure, so team fans will have to cross their fingers and hope his next post says "...which is why I'm excited to have signed for another 8 years with Nukeproof CRC!"

We reached out to Nukeproof for more information but all they would say is that "The man's a wildcat" and that some more news would be coming soon.

Whether he's got a big new deal in the works, he's dialling back the racing, he's fully retiring, or we've been royally trolled, we'll update this as we get more information.

I’m hoping he is still racing as I love seeing ride, but also understand if he ends up wanting to retire. After being home around the kiddos for all of 2020, I can understand the desire to make it more permanent.

Curious to see what happens next.

 I think there is some of that in it. Also maybe he thinks this year is going to be worse than last year covid-wise and travel-wise. They might have said OK mate you've had your time off... But we need to sell bikes. Commit to the entire season of travel and racing, we can't pay you to stay at home again. He's gone "nah mate" and decided to jack it in for the time being.

 We are covid-free in West Oz and our state government is determined to keep it that way. The current travel/quarantine restrictions are 14 days for approved overseas travellers at their own expense and confined to a hotel (if you can find a flight into Perth).

If this doesn't change, to do a full EWS season he would barely get to be at home and see his family for 4 months straight. A weeks before Whistler is the only real time, plus maybe 1-2 days after Whistler if he came home before leaving again for Europe. The DH schedule is a pain as well, but at least there is a big gap after Maribor and Les Gets.

I would be very surprised to see him do a full season of either DH or EWS. And if he's not going for the overall, I wouldn't blame him for thinking he might as well skip it and stay home with the family.

 @BigAlfonz: No question that it's extremely hard to travel for WA-based athletes. But, if he decides to sit out the racing season or retire from racing altogether, sponsors will no doubt keep him on the books for the video content he'd be able to produce from Covid-free WA.

 @jaame: The lack of acceptance is not (yet) a concern, the availability is. I would also assume that most, if not all, of the riders on the circuit are not particularly high on the priority list for the vaccine. Mandating a vaccine won't change anything until probably late summer /early fall this year. Let's just hope vaccine manufacturers can ramp up the production soon.
