The agricultural sector’s protests happening in Spain over the last few weeks have severely disrupted the 70th Ruta del Sol, its route modified on Wednesday 14th February as not enough police was available to allow the event being carried out in the safe way we’re all used to.
A short, demanding ITT will ultimately open the race on Friday 16th in Alcaudete, over 5km at 3.5% average gradient. On Saturday 17th, a 100km circuit race in Lucena will comprise six climbs of the Primera Cruz plus a steep finish in the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Araceli, where Alejandro Valverde already won in 2012. Sunday 18th will take the race to its end with a sprinter’s course in La Línea de la Concepción.
