David E. Schnell

ELKHART - David E. Schnell, 44, died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday at Elkhart General Hospital after a courageous four-year battle with leukemia.. He was born July 15, 1966 in Elkhart, to Spencer E. Schnell and Margaret "Peg" (Berlin) Schnell Everingham.. David is survived by his four children, Samuel, Spencer, Vincent and Brook; his mother, Peg Everingham; ex-wife, Jill (Rodino) Schnell; twin brother, Douglas (Jacquelyn) Schnell; sister, Kathleen (O'Neill) Bollero; brothers, Tim and Jerry O'Neill; and many nieces and nephews.. Preceding David in death were his father, Spencer, who died in 1985; a brother, Steven, who died in December 2010; and his grandparents, Warren and Gladys (Lewallen) Berlin and Spencer Sr. and Beulah Schnell.. David attended Beardsley Elementary, Northside Middle School and graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1985. He graduated from Indiana University in 1990. He was rated a No. 1 Blue Chip football player and went on to play college ball at Indiana University for Coach Bill Mallory, leading the team as quarterback to back-to-back victories against Ohio State and Michigan for the first time in Indiana history. David played in the All American Bowl, Peach Bowl, All Star Japan Bowl and the Liberty Bowl, where he received the Most Valuable Player award. David was an assistant coach at Elkhart Central and football coach at Northside Middle School.. After college, he worked with Chris Darling Insurance at Heritage Financial Groups. He was the owner of Berkey Insurance Agency.. He was a member of the Elks Christiana Creek Golf Club and a big Chicago Bears fan and IU basketball fan. He enjoyed fishing and water sports at his home on Long Lake and grilling out. He loved family gatherings, golfing and camping.. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, Elkhart, where a vigil service will take place at 7:30 p.m.. Friends may also call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Elkhart. Father Bill Sullivan will officiate.. Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen.. Memorials can be given to the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church or David E. Schnell Football Scholarship through Key Bank, 1842 E. Bristol St. Elkhart, IN 46514.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Orders placed in:

January - May

Planting will take place in Spring or Summer of the same year.

June - December

Planting will take place in Spring of the following year.
