All Things Beer Episode 46 – Samichlaus, Frogichlaus, and Ol’ Saint Nick

Brewed once per year on St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6) and aged for 10 months before packaging, the Triplebock Samichlaus can rightfully be called the OG of extreme beers. In this episode, Dan Shaffer, head brewer at Land Grant, and Ralph Wolfe join us by the fireside for a warming tipple of a beer that was once the world’s strongest beer. We discuss the history of this cult classic, approaches to brewing high gravity beers, and compare the new version that comes in a skinny can with an older bottled version from 2021. Along the way we discuss the historic St. Nicholas and European traditions surrounding St. Nicholas Day, including his frightening sidekicks Krampus and Zwarte Piet, and give out some questionable parenting advice. We finish with the Samichlaus-inspired Frogichlaus Swiss Style Celebration Lager from Akron’s Hoppin’ Frog Brewery.
