Carp

Cyprinus carpio

Description:
The carp is a member of the Cyprinidae family. It is one of the most important freshwater fish species. It has been farmed in fish ponds for 2000 years. It can reach a length of 1.5 m and live to be 40 years old.  Its massive head is recognizable by a large mouth with four barbels, whisker-like sensory organs. The carp can extend its mouth outward like a tube and use it to scour the bottom and suck up food. Depending on its habitat, its colour ranges from white-gold to brown on the dorsal side, becoming lighter and coppery on the flanks, and ending with a more or less light-coloured ventral side. Carp is active at night and at daytime, but its activity is in any case connected with water temperature.

Weight: up to 50 kg

Spawning: Males become reproductively mature when they are between 2 and 3 years old, females between 3 and 4 years. Spawning season is between end of April and mid-June.

Wels catfish

Silurus Glanis

Description:
In our climate conditions, the wels catfish can reach a length of 2 to 3 m and live to be more than 60 years old. Its body is protected by thick, scaleless skin. Its primary body colour ranges from olive green to blue-grey. The wels catfish dwells in places where the watercourse is slow. It often inhabits storage reservoirs where water is warm and in winter it gathers in many numbers at quieter, deeper locations.

Weight: up to 100 kg

Spawning: Males become reproductively mature when they are between 2 and 3 years old, females between 4 and 5 years. Spawning time is in May.

Northern pike

Esox Lucius

Description:
It is one of the largest freshwater fish species. It can grow up to 150 cm long and live to be about 25 years old. Its body is the shape of a torpedo. Juvenile fish are green and their adult colour depends on the habitat in which they dwell. The pike’s primary body colour is dark green shading to lighter green and yellow on the flanks, with many light spots.

It dwells in slow-running or standing waters with dense vegetation, where it can hide in ambush of its prey. In the summer, it is active in the morning and in the evening. In autumn, it is active throughout the day. This species is very important in economic terms and it is much loved in sport fishing, not only because of its excellent meat, which has a good consistency and low-fat content, but also because this fish is relatively easy to catch.

Weight: up to 24 kg

Spawning: Usually in March, at a temperature between 7 and 9 degrees Celsius.

Zander

Stizostedion lucioperca

Description:
The zander is a fish from the Percidae family. In our waters it can reach a length of up to 130 cm. Its body is long, spindle-shaped, of medium height. It is greyish green on the dorsal side, with between 8 and 12 dark black stripes across its flanks.

The zander dwells in bodies of water that are deep and spacious with a hard and uneven bottom. It is active in the evening, when it goes out in search of food.

Weight: up to 15 kg

Spawning: It becomes reproductively mature when it is between 2 and 5 years old. It spawns in April and May, at a water temperature of 8-14 degrees Celsius.

Bighead carp

Hypophthalmichthys nobilis

Description:
Bighead carp is recognizable for its big head and mottled silver-grey colouration. It has a large, flat body with a broad dorsal region. Juvenile fish are uniformly silvery in colour, but as they get older, they get their recognizable elongated marbled spots across the dorsal and lateral sides. The longest and largest specimens can be found in the waters of China. Bighead carp lives in slow-running and standing waters. It feeds on zooplankton, which they filter through their gill rakers, rows of bony or cartilaginous processes that project from the gill arch. It is a very timid fish that reacts strongly to being disturbed.

Weight: Between 35 and 40 kg

Spawning: It becomes reproductively mature when it is between 3 and 8 years old.

Grass carp

Ctenopharyngodon idella

Description:
Grass carp is among the larger fish species, with its elongated, chubby, torpedo-shaped body. It originates from the Amur river in northern Asia, from where it was introduced into Europe. Its body is covered with relatively large scales. It inhabits lower and middle reaches of slow-running rivers.

Weight: up to 50 kg

Spawning: When the temperature reaches more than 25°C, in rapid waters, on sandy or rocky bottom. Artificial breeding of the grass carp in Croatia began in 1970, at Grudnjak fishery near Orahovica, by using broodstock introduced from Hungary.
