Our Guide To Keeping Black Calvus Cichlid

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Altolamprologus calvus
    • Common name: Black Calvus Cichlid
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Tanganyika in East Africa
    • Adult length: Up to 6 inches
    • Lifespan: 8 to 10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Black Calvus Cichlids prefer a rocky aquarium setup mimicking their natural habitat. Provide caves and crevices for them to establish territories.
    • Decorate the tank with smooth rocks and create multiple hiding spots to reduce aggression among individuals.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain alkaline water conditions with a pH range of 7.8 to 9.0.
    • Keep the water temperature between 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Provide efficient filtration to maintain water quality, and a moderate water flow is suitable for these cichlids.
  5. Diet:

    • Black Calvus Cichlids are carnivorous. Offer them a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and include live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans.
  6. Tank mates:

    • They can be kept with other Tanganyikan cichlids of similar size and temperament. Avoid aggressive tank mates that may harass them.
    • Consider species like Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, and other peaceful cichlids from Lake Tanganyika.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Black Calvus Cichlids are known for their secretive and territorial nature. Provide plenty of hiding spots and territories to reduce aggression.
    • Observe and ensure that tank mates are not overly aggressive or territorial, as this can lead to conflicts.
