Our Guide To Keeping Wild Type Axolotl

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Axolotl
    • Common name: Wild Type Axolotl
    • Family: Ambystomatidae
    • Origin: Mexico, specifically the Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco regions
    • Adult length: Varies, typically between 15 to 45 cm
    • Lifespan: Up to 15 years with proper care
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Wild Type Axolotls require a spacious tank with ample floor space for movement. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons per axolotl is recommended.
    • Provide hiding spots with rocks, caves, and aquatic plants like Java Moss or Anubias. Avoid gravel substrate as axolotls can ingest it, leading to health issues.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water temperature cool, ideally between 16 to 20°C (60 to 68°F).
    • Maintain good water quality with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and low ammonia and nitrate levels.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Avoid strong water currents as axolotls are poor swimmers. Use a gentle filtration system to maintain water quality without creating strong currents.
  5. Diet:

    • Feed Wild Type Axolotls a diet primarily consisting of live or frozen foods like bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms.
    • Offer occasional treats of high-quality axolotl pellets or sinking carnivore pellets.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Axolotls are best kept alone or with their own kind to prevent potential aggression or stress.
    • Do not house axolotls with fast-moving or nippy fish as they may mistake their appendages for food and attempt to bite them.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Wild Type Axolotls are primarily nocturnal and may become stressed in brightly lit tanks. Provide subdued lighting and plenty of hiding places to make them feel secure.
    • They are generally peaceful towards tank mates of appropriate size and temperament but should be monitored for any signs of aggression.
