Our Guide To Keeping Saulosi Malawi Cichlid Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Pseudotropheus saulosi
    • Common name: Saulosi
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
    • Adult length: 7.5 cm (3 inches)
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Saulosi prefer rocky environments with caves and crevices for hiding and breeding.
    • Provide a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Decorate the tank with rocks and artificial caves to create territories.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain water temperature between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
    • Keep pH levels between 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Water hardness should be between 10 to 20 dGH.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a powerful filtration system to maintain water quality.
    • Provide moderate water flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Offer high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with spirulina-based foods.
    • Occasionally feed them with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Saulosi are semi-aggressive and territorial, so choose tank mates carefully.
    • They can be kept with other Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament such as Pseudotropheus acei, Labidochromis caeruleus, and Melanochromis auratus.
    • Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive cichlids.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Saulosi are active and social fish, often displaying interesting behaviors within their territories.
    • They can be aggressive towards conspecifics, especially during breeding times, so it's essential to provide enough hiding spots and territories.
