Symphyotrichum novi-belgii is a native perennial aster, also called New York aster, that can be found growing to between three and four feet tall in brackish and freshwater marshes and other locations with wetter soils. Preferring full-sun locations, Symphyotrichum novi-belgii can also tolerate part shade and a variety of soil conditions, including nutritionally poor soils and ones rich in clay.

Blooming from late summer into the early fall, Symphyotrichum novi-belgii is valuable for late-season pollinators, but also serves as a host plant for several butterfly species. In the late fall, seeds provide food for songbirds and mammals.
