Maine Sunrise: Portland Headlight

MAINE SUNRISE: PORTLAND HEADLIGHT

Finding a view of the sunrise on the coast of Maine

Maine is one of the best places to watch the sun rise in the morning. Anywhere along the coastline you’re almost always guaranteed a beautiful view. Visitors come from all over the globe to watch the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, where it’s the highest point along the North Atlantic seacoast and one of the first places to get hit by sunlight. Further south is one of my favorite locations: Portland Headlight. It’s the most photographed lighthouse in America.

I’ve spent the majority of my life living in Maine and we have visited this lighthouse more times than I can remember. However, never have I seen the sunrise there. I made it my mission to rise early and drive down to see it. I’m not a morning person anymore so it was a challenge. After checking the weather forecast and the cloud coverage, we planned to be there about half hour before the sun was supposed to rise and arrived just as the color was starting to show. There were already a few other photographers set up with their tripods and drones among many other tourists but it was nowhere near as busy as the top of Cadillac Mountain.

It was the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen.

It was the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. The colors were so vibrant and bright, like the sky was made of sorbet. Watching the sun start to peak up over the ocean horizon was breathtaking. The early morning fishermen were heading out and you could watch their silhouette go off into the distance.

It may have been my favorite adventure of the year, but I also have a lot of favorites. Catching a Maine sunrise is a must if you ever have the time to do so. Grab some coffee and breakfast with your friends or family and enjoy the view around you. You won’t regret it!
