Product Description

You will receive a live, mature cape sundew, an appropriate sized pot for growing it, and enough high quality New Zealand sphagnum moss to plant it. These plants must be kept wet at all times, so it is best to have a tray, bowl, or saucer for the pot to sit in. It is also important that the plant be watered with distilled water, reverse osmosis water, or rain water because regular tap water can be deadly to carnivorous plants. Drosera capensis is a wonderful variety of sundew native to South Africa. The plant produces long, elegant leaves covered with tiny red tendrils that produce sparkling glue. Insects get trapped in this glue, and the leaf slowly curls around them to digest. Drosera capensis also produces clusters of bright pink flowers that grow atop tall stalks. These plants can be grown on a sunny windowsill, in artificially-lit terrariums, or in mild outdoor climates if exposed to filtered sunlight. They should be protected from extremely hot and extremely cold weather if grown outdoors.

Very easy!
I work from home and have many plants in my office; after being constantly annoyed by gnats hanging around my monitors (and face) I decided to fight them. My phone must have heard me complaining because all of a sudden TikTok started showing me videos of cape sundew plants. I've never had any type of carnivorous plant before but was willing to give it a try. Let me tell you this plant is so easy! The existing 'leaves' were dead on arrival but there were 2 or 3 new ones coming up already, and after about a week it was ready to start catching gnats. Now 6 weeks later there are 8 active leaves and 4 new ones coming. I've done nothing but leave it in a sunny window and keep it wet. You do have to use distilled water but it's cheap, I keep a gallon handy and water as needed. (You can distill water yourself but I don't want to make that kind of effort.) I had no idea there were THAT many gnats in here but this plant is feasting on them. It's so satisfying, this is easily my #1 favorite plant purchase.

This is my first time trying to raise a sundew plant. I chose this one specifically based on lots of positive reviews and that the Cape Sundew is a good starter carnivorous plant. I did some basic online research for about a week before making my purchase.

This purchase came with everything needed to pot the sundew. I thought I was going to need to purchase a small pot and substrate, but was pleasantly surprised on opening the box that a plastic pot and long fiber sphagnum moss (AKA the shipping material) was provided! The instructions sheet provided was clear, but I watched the video instructions anyways to easily visualize what I was going to do.

I did have to purchase some distilled water for the sundew, but that's no big deal. It's been 4 days since I've potted the sundew, and everything looks great so far! I'll update my review if anything changes :)

This plant was a very easy transplant after following the instructions. It has begun to decimate my gnat population which always seems to try arising in my seed starting room.

This came in the mail very well-packaged and in decent shape. it was very small and delicate and frankly, I am surprised it made the trip. Well, I am happy to report the plant has grown quite a bit (even though I bought it in mid-winter). It likes the window sill I put it on and it gets a ton of indirect light. I bought it thinking it could feast on the small nats that sometimes get in the house in the warmer months, so we will see in the spring. Wish it would have come with suggestions for food in the winter to keep it thriving.

I have a light chamber where I start tomato and pepper plants. Some how small flies got in. I bought this plant on faith, as my luck with pitcher plants hasn't been good.. It came a little long in the tooth. There were few droplets on the leaves. But I followed the instructions; and within a couple of days the droplets were ample. In the next week the plant caught a dozen flies. Four on one leaf!!! The plant is sprouting new leaves every day. It's been a great purchase. I was going to buy the plant directly from the nursery for $15 with $14 for shipping. Got it through Amazon for $20 and free shipping...saved $9. A question,,, do the droplets have something to them that attracts insects? Seems to be the case. Or do the bugs just wander on to the plant randomly?
So I took off a star. The plant started out great. Caught about 20 fruit flies. Had it under 12 hours of light. It was doing well. Then, one day, it just died. I mean DIED. Nothing left but a black hole where the plant used to be. Only used distilled water. "Tis a mystery.
