Product Description

kalanchoe blossfeldiana calandiva

KALANCHOE BLOSSFELDIANA CALANDIVA

Blossfeldiana Calandiva, a cultivar of the Kalanchoe succulent family, is a very popular "gift plant" because it has beautiful leathery, dark-green leaves and stunning clusters of red/orange/white/purple trumpet-shaped double flowers that last up to 6-8 weeks! Compact and easy to care for, Kalanchoe Calandivas are also available in a wide variety of flower colors (white, yellow, purple, and more).

Kalanchoe Calandiva is the perfect, low-maintenance houseplant for any living space. Our healthy plants come directly from California to you. Upon receiving your plant, simply open the box and position it on a well-ventilated, sunlit windowsill. Water only when the soil feels dry to the touch.

POTTING AND REPOTTING

  • To ensure your plant thrives and remains healthy, it's essential to prioritize proper drainage and soil aeration. Select pots made of materials like concrete, terracotta, or ceramic that have drainage holes at the bottom. These holes allow excess water to escape and prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water, which can lead to root rot. Enhance soil aeration through weekly shovel probing, fostering air pockets that enhance the roots' ability to absorb water, nutrients, and oxygen.
  • Consider repotting your plant every 1-3 years, particularly when it outgrows its current pot. The exact time to repot depends on the growth rate of each plant and its pot size. Aim to repot during the growing season using a pot that is only one size larger than the original. Utilize fresh, clean, well-draining soil, and inspect the roots for any signs of damage or disease before repotting.

CARE GUIDE

Light for succulents

Water for succulent

Temperature for succulent

Soil for succulent

Light

  • Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Calandiva loves bright, indirect. If grown indoors, bright spots with filtered light and plentiful airflow are ideal for this plant.
  • Keep in mind that direct, scorching sun will burn its leaves. If grown outdoors, plant your Kalanchoe in a partially shady spot or cover it during the afternoon when the sunlight is harsh and intense.
  • Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Calandiva tolerates partial shade, but low light and deep shade will stunt its growth and make this plant leggy.
  • This plant needs a few hours of bright light daily. A grow light is recommended if you cannot provide your plant with enough natural light.
  • During late autumn and early winter, reduce the light exposure to promote blooming. Putting this plant in a dim room or a shady spot for about 6 weeks will help new flowers form.

Watering

  • Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Calandiva does not need frequent watering. This plant only needs watering when the soil is dry to the touch.
  • Water thoroughly and let this plant dry completely before the next watering.
  • Drain well to avoid root rot.
  • Water more during the growing season.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Calandiva is usually grown as a houseplant and it thrives in normal indoor temperatures (65-80 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • This plant can be grown outdoors in USDA zones 10a-11b. It needs to be protected from cold drafts and intense heat.
  • If you live in cold climate zones where the temperature can fall below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, it is recommended that you plant your Calandiva in a planter and bring it inside on colder days.
  • Calandiva isn’t picky when it comes to humidity. Normal indoor humidity (40-50%) is perfect for this plant and it can tolerate a bit lower or higher humidity. Too humid environment (humidity over 80%) may cause water retention and issues similar to overwatering.

Soil and Fertilizer

  • Calandiva needs well-drained, porous soils. Water should be drained fast to avoid over-absorption to roots. It is better to use a soil mix that does not settle in water for long and a pot with drainage holes.
  • The easiest solution is to choose a commercial cactus mix, otherwise, you can make a well-draining soil mixture on your own by combining the equal parts of perlite or pumice and potting soil.
  • Calandiva needs to be fertilized once per month during its growing season with diluted liquid fertilizer.

FAQ

Q. Is this plant toxic to humans and pets?

As a Kalanchoe, Calandiva contains cardiac glycosides which are toxic to animals when ingested, causing gastrointestinal irritation. Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets and children and seek medical care immediately if your pets have symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.

Q. What are some common problems of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Calandiva Red?

Kalanchoe may develop fungal or bacterial diseases, resulting in black root rot and dropping leaves.

Overwatering or bacterial disease can cause stem rot and wilting leaves.

Powdery mildew is also a common problem, recognizable by a powdery gray or white layer appearing on the leaves and stems.

This plant can also be infected by common pests like mealybugs, spider mites, and scale

Q. How do you pack the plants?

Your plant will be shipped in a sturdy box to ensure its safety. When opening your package, some soil may be loose in the box.

If you live or have an order being shipped to a location with temperatures that reach below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, we strongly recommend purchasing a winter heat pack to ensure your plant(s) arrive safely and without damage caused by winter temperatures.

Q. What should I do after receiving my box?

If your plants arrive potted with dry soil, you can water them right away (with houseplants) or wait for 2-3 days (with succulents). When watering, please give them a good soak and then drain well. If your plants arrive potted with wet soil, you first need to check their leaves and roots' condition. If the plants look healthy, you can leave them in the nursery pots and water only when the soil is completely dry. If the plants look overwatered (yellow, transparent, and soggy leaves), remove the soil from their roots and let them air dry for 1-2 days before re-potting them in a suitable pot.

Q. What to do if there is an issue with my order?

We will gladly offer replacement if your plants arrive broken/ dead. We'll always try our best to accommodate you!
